Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hi I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

Episode Highlights

Simon's Health Journey

  • Simon grew up in Hong Kong, where drinking medicinal plants is a massive part of cuisine and culture.
  • He went to the United States for college and spent ten years in finance. During this time, he immersed himself in work and, unfortunately, would often get sick.
  • He would take a lot of antibiotics and consult with doctors. However, instead of getting better, he felt more ill, and his lungs collapsed.
  • Simon went through an invasive surgery after being diagnosed with sleep apnea. After going through physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse, he realized there are alternative ways of healing he can try.
  • He embarked on a healing exploration, meeting with amazing plant doctors, medicine, and meditation experts to discover the different available organic treatments.

How Simon Started Exploring Healing Modalities

  • He felt like he was on a dead-end, and his experiences of going under the knife cause him great grief and suffering.
  • Simon realized that the health system is a business and learned how to scrutinize products and services offered to him.
  • He later realized he grew up with a culture rich with natural alternative treatments, so he went back to his roots to heal himself.

How Tea Became the Foundation of Simon's Business

  • His grandfather's lifestyle and tea practices served as inspiration for his business.
  • Hong Kong is famous for soups and tonics made with different herbs. The environment he grew up in champions the use of medicinal plants.
  • The concept of health and longevity in Eastern culture is about early detection of imbalance. In contrast, Western culture focuses on the symptomatic approach to treatment.
  • Eastern culture helps you develop awareness about energy and health irregularities, as well as identifying toxicity in your lifestyle.

Advice for People Who Aren't in Tune with Their Bodies

  • Awareness does not work only subconsciously; it also has physical applications. You can also develop your awareness by using the functions of your senses.
  • You can become aware of the toxins in your life by experiencing the authenticity of products and the environment.
  • When you spend a lot of time with yourself, you start to notice the toxicity of other people's company. You manage this through healthy means.
  • The awareness that is building up inside you allows you to be in tune with your body.

The Role of Meditation and Mindfulness

  • According to Simon, the more he meditated, the more mindful he became.
  • Through meditation, you can be more present in your life and to your family.
  • You can give 100% of your attention to the people you’re interacting with and avoid distractions while conversing.
  • Meditation enables you to be present and enjoy every single moment in your life.

Giving Time and Effort to Living Healthy

  • Many people opt for quick fixes and instant gratification in healing and improving themselves. However, it simply doesn't work like that.
  • It does not have to be hard, and it can be incredibly enjoyable.
  • Don't treat healthy lifestyle choices like eating healthy or exercising as chores. You can enjoy the time doing it.

Simon's Biggest Gift to His Health

  • Practicing mindfulness and learning physiological meditation is one of the most important things he has done.
  • It improved his health and opened doors for his spiritual development.

Pique Tea's Crystallized Form

  • He traveled to the Western part of China, where tea was first discovered.
  • Natives made tea paste to alleviate the hardship in transporting medicinal plants from the mountains.
  • Pique Tea incorporates the ways natives brew their tea. That's why Pique Tea is authentic and has won awards.
  • Pique Tea crystals are more concentrated, screens for triple three toxins, and ingredients are more active due to heat removal.

5 Powerful Quotes

“How have I been following all the wrong medical advice, like completely abusing all the things that are important to myself, and not even getting any fulfillment in exchange? And so that was the moment that I decided to really take my health into my own hands and embark on a healing journey and exploration that continues every day.”

“When you spend a lot of time by yourself, walking in the forest, playing with your dog, hanging out with the kids, just meditating, you start to become hyper-aware of people that are toxic.”

“If it's truly something that I want to do that fills me, then I should be 100% present.”

On Meditation: “The more you practice it, the more your world expands.”

“We have this special ability to create outcomes and create things in our lives, but it requires that level of presence and intent.”

How Use Holistic Health to Improve Your Life with Krista Berlincourt

The conventional health system often doesn't provide us the best picture of what a truly healthy body and mind look like. In a world where medicine and technology have become so advanced, there is the prevailing mindset if we take a pill, we’ll get better. It isn’t always the case. A holistic approach to health allows us to take a look at our body, mind, and spirit and see the root cause of our symptoms.

Joining us in this episode is an exceptional guest—Krista Berlincourt of Kenshō Health. She lets us in on the definition of holistic health and how it can help us move forward with our lives. We also talk about her personal experience in this journey and the lessons she learned that led her to the path of holistic wellness.

If you, too, want to open your door to holistic health, make sure you tune in to the episode!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover how holistic health is so much more than conventional medicine.
  2. What is the cosmic wisdom of slowness and how doing less is better.
  3. How does Krista feel radically loved? Find out toward the end of the episode.

Episode Highlights

A Platform for Everybody

  • Kenshō is the first science-backed holistic health platform.
  • People come to find two things: the very best holistic health providers across the country and reliable, science-based answers and information.
  • The idea is to provide people with holistic health solutions that will work for them, with the tech boom and interest in holistic health in mind.
  • They utilize the largest and oldest scientific publisher in the world that provides open-source information and research they've been aggregating for over 200 years.
  • Their goal in Kenshō is to make health care accessible and easy to understand for everyone.

Krista’s Life

  • She grew up in Oregon. Her parents were both naturalists and explorers.
  • She has always had a deep connection with the natural. Her parents raised her to focus on understanding her connection with nature and look at life holistically.
  • The household she grew up with wasn’t focused on stability and maintaining the conventional systems of a family.
  • She took the waves that it brought internally. At a certain point in her life, that translated into a desire for healthier relationships.

Opening the Door to Holistic Health

  • To find the support she needs, she asks herself, “Where could I grow?” and “What would help me?”
  • Conventional medicine didn’t mirror the wisdom she knew from her upbringing. She spent ten years trying to get out of that.
  • She was “super successful in the technology world,” having worked at Deutsche Telekom and Microsoft.
  • But at 28, she was hospitalized. She started working with conventional doctors, but they didn't make any progress.
  • It was a chronic condition that had her taking prednisone every single day and a cortisol steroid dosage every month. And she knew that there had to be a different way.

The Lessons in our Lives

  • We all have those teachers in our lives, such as the losses and heartbreaks that stick with us and have a rapid transformational quality.
  • In the ten years Krista spent getting out of conventional medicine, she reached a resounding conclusion: you can’t found a company that will make the world a healthy place unless you know it's not healthy for everyone.
  • The holistic view of health, mind, body, and spirit is so much more than conventional medicine.

Expecting to Get Healthy Overnight

  • We were taught that when something is wrong, taking something will suppress that symptom.
  • Some pharmaceuticals treat acute symptoms but fail to address the root symptom.
  • They create this relationship with the body where you're telling yourself that you need to fix it instantly.

Krista’s Biggest Lesson

  • When something shows up, the symptom is a symptom. It’s not the thing; it’s the thing below these.
  • She looks at what's causing that symptom and what's going on in her life.
  • It comes with the recognition that you may be creating the stress with your habits and that you have to remove those.

The Power of Slowing Down

  • She was living in three places—Portland, Austin, and New York—and they sold her last company in Spain.
  • Along with this expansion, she had to take several international long-haul flights a year.
  • She took a one-way trip to the Galapagos Islands with the sole mission of slowing down.
  • Living in the Shimano community was the first time she spent her nights in the same place for 21 days in years.
  • Constantly moving is not our natural state as people. The moment she removed all that, she got better.

The Cosmic Wisdom of Life

  • If your body doesn’t get lit up by the idea of doing something, it’s not something that’s keeping you alive longer.
  • The body only has so much energy. Decision fatigue is real fatigue.
  • We have to remind ourselves of the cosmic wisdom of slowness and doing less.

Kenshō and Holistic Health

  • There are 500,000 holistic health providers in the country that's equal to the size of the conventional medical system. But navigating that can feel challenging.
  • They created Kenshō to help people find an answer and support them if they need it.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

“It’s passive because we're young when that starts. We're taught when something's wrong, take something to suppress that symptom, and then you're done.”

“I remember him being like, ‘Just slow down and remember who the fuck you are.’”

“We do it because we have this hero complex that's been projected on us by society because someone somewhere told us that struggle makes us stronger.”

“You have to find that humor in the challenge but not absorb that challenge and think of it as like your muscle and life. Life should feel easy amidst the challenge.”

On being radically loved: “It comes from the inside. And it is like that nurturing and loving energy that's just my own.”

Episode Highlights

Ethan’s Experience In The Industry

  • Ethan grew up in New Hampshire and was born on the Stonyfield Farm. His father is the co-founder of Stonyfield Farm.
  • He is familiar and involved with the natural foods industry ever since he was a child.
  • He was raised in an environment that fosters environmental awareness and organic foods, which translated to his efforts, such as eco-friendly packaging.
  • There is more demand in the industry now than ever before.

His Mindset Toward Health and Wellness

  • As a child, he was indoctrinated into organic food that even his friends didn’t want to eat because it wasn’t pleasant.
  • His mother is a three-time breast cancer survivor and advocates for a healthy lifestyle in terms of diet and mindset.
  • People are intimidated by healthy eating and the numerous fad diets that seem to contradict each other.
  • Eating healthy definitely creates a momentum of better choices, from your diet to your exercise.
  • We shouldn’t take “democratizing organic” for granted.

Marketing Versus Product Development In Health Products

  • It is easy to dress up anything as anything.
  • Anyone can slap health claims and words onto labels with a lot of freedom, and people accept it as the truth.
  • Consumers, especially younger ones, demand transparency and want to look beyond the labeling.
  • With food, there should be a lot of authenticity with the product.
  • Big companies buy out smaller companies that actually have something new and organic to bring to the table.

Lessons Learned in Business

  • You can only do one thing at a time and focus on that.
  • It is easy to feel overwhelmed and intimidated by the path you're taking, so take small steps.
  • Make sure you’re coming from an authentic place and sample your product with friends and family.

The Importance of Exercise and Energy

  • Ethan feels more frantic if he doesn’t get to exercise.
  • It’s difficult to sit in front of a compute for several hours, especially if you don’t include a workout in the middle of the day.
  • Energy is your most valuable resource.
  • It’s less about the hours you spend and more about spending your hours well and productively.

Approaching Customer Feedback

  • Ethan draws his energy to work from customer feedback.
  • He gets more drive and motivation from knowing the difference he makes on people’s lives.

His Idea of Energy Shots

  • Most energy shots give you a jittery feeling that follows a crash.
  • Ethan’s energy shots provide a sustained amount of energy without the crash.
  • His approach in developing the products was a series of iterations and ensuring quality throughout the process
  • The caffeine sources in his energy products are expensive but organic, compared to synthetic powders in typical energy shots.

Tips for Improving Immunity, Energy, and Life

  • Immunity isn’t something you can simply turn on.
  • You have to maintain your health in the long term, and you can’t procrastinate.
  • Be sustainable and consistent with your diet and your lifestyle.
  • Take care of yourself even when things aren’t in the dire extreme.
  • It’s a special experience to create something, put it out in the world, and have a positive impact on others.

5 Powerful Quotes

“A lot of times, diet is the first place to start. Like, if you're eating better, it's going to be easier to start working out, you’re generally in a better mindset, you're sleeping better, all those things.”

“Around health and wellness, you really just create momentum, and that can be created through one simple decision.”

“The most important thing I've learned is that you can really only do one thing at a time.”

“People say that your most valuable resource is time, but it's actually energy. Think less in terms of your hours spent and more in terms of how you're most optimized.”

"If you can create something and put it out into the world and have it be real and then have things come back to you, that's a pretty special experience because you're interacting with the universe."

About the Guest

Ethan Hirshberg is the founder of Ethan’s, a company that produces energy shots and healthy beverages. He was born in the Stonyfield Farm and was raised in a household that places importance on eating organically and having a healthy lifestyle. Having food-conscious parents and an eco-friendly environment, Ethan was exposed to the industry early and developed his own product that provided sustained energy without the crash. He stays genuine in his mission to make a difference in people’s lives through organic and environmentally safe products.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

“And I have discovered that as long as I have those two things (morning and pre-bed routines), the middle of my day can be a complete shit show. And I’m okay because I started the day on my terms, and I ended the day on my terms.”

“My cold shower in the morning is better than any cup of coffee, better than any antidepressant I was ever on. It’s like an instant mood and energy elevator for me.”

“It (routines and morning cold showers) gives me the capacity to handle stress in other areas of my life because it reinforces the idea that it’s not about what's happening to me. It is how I am choosing to respond to what's happening to me.”

“I think we have so many opportunities to accept help from people who we don't even have to ask—they're already offering. And I feel like accepting help is the freest and easiest form of self-care.”

On communicating with your partners: “If you don't ask for what you want—they're not mind readers—and if you don't get it, there's a really good chance that you're going to end up, you know, blowing up with everyone stuck at home.”

About Our Guest

Samantha Skelly is the founder and CEO of Hungry For Happiness. Their mission is to empower women who struggle with disordered eating and body image issues. Samantha also hosts The Hungry for Happiness Podcast and is the author of the book, Hungry for Happiness: One Woman's Journey from Fighting Food to Finding Freedom. She is also a visionary leader, entrepreneur, and speaker.

Changing Your Mindset For A Life of Abundance

Initial Introduction to Money

  • Her parents split up when she was at a very young age.
  • She grew up seeing these two worlds around money. Her mother has a more fluid relationship with money. Her father, on the other hand, is the complete opposite.
  • She grew adopting her dad's fear-based thinking. Samantha felt like needs to protect her money, or else she's not going to be safe.
  • Since then, she had to rewire everything in her system and rewire herself for wealth consciousness. Her parents’ money story is not hers.

The Lack Mentality and Wealth Mindset

  • Money loves to circulate.
  • We tend to hoard money because our mindset is rooted in scarcity and not having enough.
  • When we are not certain with ourselves, we look at the external world to find something to make us feel safe.
  • It is rooted in the feeling that we lack something.
  • We've collectively decided that money keeps us safe, even though it doesn't at all.

Changing Your Mindset and Your Money Story

  • You can teach yourself that you are rich, and money comes to you with ease and abundance.
  • If our energy radiates "wanting," we are telling the universe that we lack something.
  • Instead, you have to ask yourself, "What would the richest version of me do right now?"

Bringing Value to the World

  • Your financial health is tied to your ability to expand your value to the world.
  • It allows you to feel good, safe, and comfortable to create content and communicate your message.
  • We need money to build, serve, transform lives, and raise the consciousness of the planet.
  • We need to have a clean relationship with money. If our relationship with money is fractured, we're not allowing money to work with us. Instead, we are fighting it.
  • Having money is about giving back and using it for the greater good.

Getting Rid of Conditional Self-Worth

  • We link our bank accounts, the money we have, to our self-worth, which is the biggest trap and illusion.
  • We are so worthy, regardless of what we have. Even if we lose everything tomorrow, we are still lovable and worthy.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

  • “I can teach myself, teach my body, that I am rich, I am wealthy, I am abundant, money comes to me with ease and abundance, and it flows in and out effortlessly. And I add value to the marketplace, and I get rewarded handsomely for that—and I woke up every single day, during this time, because I put my ass on the line.”
  • “Do not look at your current reality and your bank account for evidence on where you're going, because that'll screw you up all day long. I had to fundamentally pretend I didn't exist in my reality; I don't really like the term fake it 'til you make it,’ but it's like, ‘be it until you become it.’”
  • “When our relationship with money is so fractured, and we're like, "Money is the root of all evil,” and blah, blah, blah—we have all these associations—we're not allowing money to work with us. We're fighting it. Well, we can't do that and expect to have abundance. And it's not about being greedy, it's about giving back.”
  • “And I think that's where we get so caught up and why we're so forced into hustling for our worth is because we have that link of ‘my bank account is inherently tied to my self worth,’ which is the biggest trap and illusion of all time—we are so worthy, regardless.”
  • “I feel radically loved when I am committed to my joy. And in that process of me being committed to my joy, I feel like the universe just dotes on me and loves me to be like, ‘Thank you for honoring yourself, and thank you for bringing so much light to your system so that you can radiate it out.’”
