Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hi I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[11:22] “As a young child, you should just be enjoying your life, enjoying being a kid, you know? And not feeling all this insecurity, and all these feelings of, ‘Oh my gosh, I'm not good enough for my clothes, don't look like their clothes, or my teeth are crooked, and I'm not pretty because they have perfect teeth.’”

[28:44] “When you finally get to a place where you see the light, and it's shining on you, you feel that warmth, that of being in dark and cold for so long is phenomenal. And I owe it all to them. I owe everything to my parents.”

[30:54] “When you're there for other people, beautiful things can happen. And that could lead to such a beautiful road of friendships and relationships.”

[38:25] “God has a plan for you in your life. And sometimes we have to endure the storm, we have to endure the desert, but many times, God will just take care of you and he will get you out of that place.”

[39:18] “But know that you have so much inside of yourself that can get through anything—that you're powerful, you're brave, it's okay to cry, it's okay to question. It's also okay to be strong, and to try to be positive, and to feel the way that you want to feel, but just know that there is a plan that you will see the rising sun again. That there is hope in the midst of so much darkness.”

We are living in unprecedented times. The disasters going on all around us may overwhelm us if we continue to merely react to them instead of responding to them. Thus, returning to ourselves through meditation will be beneficial for our spiritual well-being, especially in this time of crisis.

In this episode, Alan Finger discusses why we are trapped in our own thoughts and misbelief. As a yoga and meditation expert, he believes we are excessively reactive to the world around us because we don't take the time to be still. Now more than ever, we need to practice mindfulness and yoga to be at peace in this anxiety-inducing world.

If you want to uplift your consciousness, reconnect with yourself, and decrease your anxiety, this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn how to apply meditation in your life to lessen anxiety and emotional reactiveness.
  1. Discover different aspects of yoga and the true essence of the discipline.
  1. Find out practical ways to become more self-aware, loving, and peaceful.

Episode Highlights

Self-Awareness During the Crisis

  • We develop a picture of who we are through our five senses and call it “me.”
  • Our reality is different from our thoughts and dreams.
  • We are trapped in our misbelief because we have to survive.
  • We are too emotionally reactive to all the crazy things going on around us.
  • Meditate and get back to the self to learn how to respond, rather than react, to life.

Responding vs. Reacting

  • Our minds and senses can only react, and we get swayed by our emotions.
  • On the other hand, response is a flow and expression of love.
  • Sadhana is the daily tuning back to your unbound intelligence.
  • Saturate your brain with intelligence rather than synapses or the comfortable patterns in your mind.

How to Rewire Our Brain

  • Even if other people try to lead us the right way, we get angry at them because of our established patterns.
  • Meditation is all about cutting a new pattern.
  • The first pattern is to quiet your brain or Nirodha Parinama.
  • The second pattern is getting out of duality and reaching a state of Samadhi.
  • The final pattern is bringing greater intelligence to our senses and chakra, called Ekagrata Parinama.

Social Media & Meditation

  • Social media has become a way to communicate with the rest of the world.
  • It’s corruptible, but we can use it well if we put in the correct information.
  • We can uplift consciousness using technology.
  • Alan now teaches yoga online, and his classes are growing.
  • In social media, any post is bound to have an opinion opposite of what you believe in.

Discerning Between Peace & Ignorance

  • You can’t run away from the world forever; you'll be pulled in eventually.
  • Let your life unfold and live your role. This is karma.
  • You have the free will to either follow your purpose or go on and on with the same routines.
  • Look into the light and wait for it to come.
  • All we need is 18 minutes of silence or Sadhana. All your practice will lead you back into the now.

Why a Teacher Is Important

  • Your guru has already reached the light, and they'll lead you there.
  • Nowadays, being a guru has become a business.
  • If your guru leads you to the light, respect them for who they are.
  • A good guru knows the pitfalls of darkness and how to take you from there to the light.
  • When your consciousness is withdrawn from the senses, you become an observer.

Components of Yoga

  • Asanas are about poses and balance.
  • Pranayama is about controlling and synchronizing your breathing.
  • Kriya yoga is about moving up the consciousness and finding the pathway that will lead us to a state of oneness.
  • You need to know how to bring your energy back to you after meditating.
  • Listen to the full episode to hear Alan guiding me through meditation!

Why Alan Goes by His First Name

  • He believes that having a Sanskrit name could alienate people.
  • He prefers being called Alan and wearing simple clothes.
  • Being a guru isn't about how you look the part; it's how much Shakti (dynamic and cosmic energy) you can radiate.

Beginner’s Guide to Reconnecting

  • Learn just a few yoga poses.
  • Sit down and get your breaths full and deep. Feel your diaphragm.
  • Nadi Shodhana Pranayama, or alternate nostril breathing, is an excellent exercise.
  • The fuel for your mind is breath. Breath is life.
  • Humans daydream when we breathe through both nostrils. This is good for meditating.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[6:27] “Anyone who can tap into genius comes back, and looks at life, and can respond to life rather than react. When we react, it's COVID, it's presidential elections, it's chaos, and we get pulled into it and the dramas begin. Whereas we come to it from spirit, we come to it from a pure vision, we express and do what our role necessarily is, we know we're going back to meditate and back to self.”

[16:34] “It's (social media) connecting us, and the more we can put out this kind of correct information into it, the more people will grow.”

[41:21] “Yoga was done to balance the body and the energetics that's in the body to bring us to a peak consciousness.”

[52:42] “It's not how many tattoos and nose rings and blah blahs you can have. It's how much Shakti you can radiate in life. Uplift everyone by uplifting your own consciousness. Uplift all beings with you.”

[59:33] “When your mind is still, the nature of consciousness that is not distracted by mind is unconditional love. That's the essence; that's the language of your soul.”

Parenting & Evolving with Your Transgender Child with Paria Hassouri

For many parents, accepting a child with a different gender identity that stray from the heteronormative is challenging. You might feel scared and in denial at first, but your love will trump your doubts and fears. The most important thing to do is to be supportive of your child and keep your heart and mind open for them.

In this episode, listen to Dr. Paria Hassouri and her daughter’s story of transition. From denial, anger, and grief to reaching acceptance, Paria shares how to see your child’s authentic self. By sharing their journey, she hopes more families and communities will radically love their transgender members.

Tune in to learn how you can enrich the way you parent your transgender child.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Be inspired by Dr. Paria’s story of how she embraced being a mother to a daughter who discovered her true self.
  2. Learn ways to become a radically loving parent, family member, and community to transgender people, especially children.
  3. Find out how and what Pariah radically loves.

Resources:

Episode Highlights

Inspiration for the Book

  • Paria felt the need to write a book that would have been the story she needed when her daughter came out in 2017.
  • She felt utterly blindsided when her 13 ½-year-old child came out as transgender.
  • She admits to having made many mistakes but discovered numerous lessons she hopes to share with parents experiencing the same through the book.

Changing Beliefs & Letting Go

  • Parents of trans children should come to terms with the fact that they didn’t know something fundamental about their children.
  • They should let go of the power identity struggle within themselves because the bottom line is that it is about their child—not them.
  • Once they let go of the power struggle, their relationship with their child can be better and stronger.
  • Once they allow your children to live their authentic selves, their lives and relationship will be better than they ever were.

What Should Parents Do Differently

  • The first thing a parent should do is to pause and listen instead of automatically denying their child.
  • Parents should get into a support group for parents of trans children as soon as possible.
  • Hassouri recommends that a trans child's parent should not underestimate their capacity to evolve with their child.

On Parent’s Protective Instincts

  • Paria advises parents to be mindful not to treat their trans children differently.
  • Sometimes, parents project their fears onto their children and link that fear to their child's gender identity.
  • Parents should not assume that every one of their child’s problems is related to their child being transgender.

Spreading Transgender Awareness

  • According to Paria, 80% of Americans haven’t encountered a trans person or a family with a trans person.
  • People fear what they don’t know and don’t see, so the transgender community should spread awareness.
  • Families with trans children are no different from any other family.
  • Trans people tend to have negative portrayals in the media. That needs to change, and people need to see trans people as normal, too, not strange or unusual.

Is There a Right Age to Come Out?

  • For Paria, it is not the age but about listening to the child.
  • There is no harm in allowing a child to express themselves the way they want.
  • Exploring ways to express their gender is different from being transgender.
  • Parents should take their children’s lead, especially if their children are happy and not in distress.
  • Parents should use the words and expressions a child uses as a guide on how to move forward.

How to Support Your Trans Child

  • Listen and be optimistic about them.
  • Live in the present.
  • Parent out of love instead of fear.

Being Radically Loved

  • Paria Hassouri feels radically loved when she is genuinely seen and heard.
  • Radical love for her is when she can validate people, their feelings, and their identities.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[23:07] “[Do] not underestimate your capacity to evolve with your child.”

[28:53] “My family with a trans child is no different than any other family that doesn't have a trans child. I have the same hopes, dreams, aspirations for my kid than anybody else has for theirs.”

[32:28] “Instead of parenting with fear, parent out of love.”

[40:32] “Part of what creates a great parent is somebody who's constantly and continues to work on themselves and continues to be open.”

About Paria

Among her many roles, Paria Hassouri is proudest of being a mother of three.

Being a transgender rights activist is something very near and dear to her because of their transgender daughter.

Crises can strike at any time, and they're usually unexpected. Some of us bounce back and pivot quickly, but others need to make 180-degree turns in their lives.

In today's episode, TV journalist and producer JD Cargill shares how the pandemic disrupted his career and how to find a silver lining amid adversity. He also explains how to work your way past the discouraging voice that pops in your head from time to time—your inner saboteur.

If you're going through a rough patch and you want to learn how to uplift yourself, tune in to this episode!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover how JD coped with the effects of the pandemic on his career and mental health.
  2. How you can fuel your purpose during tough times?
  3. Find out how JD feels radically loved by listening to the full episode!

Resources

Episode Highlights

How JD Became a Television Journalist

  • JD developed his love for films growing up when his mom took him to the cinemas on Friday nights. He wanted to act on this passion and create a career around it.
  • After taking up journalism in college, JD moved to Los Angeles to become an actor. He took up acting classes when he wasn’t landing jobs for a while.
  • Training made JD realize he wasn’t good at the craft. However, he still wanted to stay in the entertainment industry.
  • Seeing Jules Asner on TV inspired him to become an entertainment reporter and producer.
  • He got into a business where he can build relationships, talk about the things he loves, and use the skills that, for him, flow naturally.

JD’s Career During a Health Crisis

  • COVID-19 took away JD's career, which freed him up to do anything.
  • JD initially had ideas of creating a mobile studio for podcasting, which didn't push through because of the current health crisis.
  • Instead, JD built a podcast studio in the basement of his home in Pasadena.
  • He and Ed, his engineer, already have three to four show ideas, including a podcast called Bachelor.

On Fueling Your Purpose Amid the Pandemic

  • If you’re going through a rough patch, what matters is how you pick yourself up.
  • Like Rosie, JD believes in meditation and also allowing yourself to be a wreck. But you have to eventually get out of it by focusing on whatever brings you joy.
  • Whenever JD’s “inner saboteur” pops up in his head, he convinces himself he can do it. He tells himself, ‘I know me. I trust myself. I will not let myself fail.’
  • The key is to find your primary motivator and use it to power through that voice in your head that tries to destroy you.
  • Tantra Yoga comes with the belief that we are born with limitations. To expand beyond them, we must understand what to do next from a state of stillness.

The Biggest Lesson Learned This Quarantine

  • It’s okay to lose jobs, money, and other things as long as you keep a hold of yourself.
  • JD learned to trust himself and believe everything will work out.
  • He also learned not to overreact when receiving bad news.

JD’s Anchor Point

  • JD struggled with opioid dependency.
  • Whatever your issues are, find a pathway out and try different things until you see what works for you.
  • Accept your reality. You don’t have to escape it. Be yourself.

On Freedom

  • JD has never felt freer in his life than he does now.
  • Modern Podcasting is the first project he has ever done entirely on his own. He considers this as his silver lining during the pandemic.
  • For JD, there are times when you need to let the universe or whatever higher power you believe in forge your path.
  • It takes work to get to know yourself and see where you’re going in life.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[09:52] “The thing that makes you an adult is the day that you realize that whatever you're going through, millions of other people are going through it too. So there is no reason to hold anything back.”

[14:36] “If you don't take real action towards a dream or if you do and either thing doesn't deliver that dream in a timely manner, there's a lot of dreams. Let's find something that will satiate you.”

[23:58] “I believe, like you, in meditation, and breathing, and getting as centered as possible, and giving myself permission to be just a wreck. I did that. And then I gave myself permission to get myself out of it.”

[32:55] “It's okay to lose stuff, and money, and things. It's not okay to lose who you are, yourself, in the process, especially if you know yourself and you like yourself.”

[39:16] “Once you accept that, ‘This is me; this is my life; this is my condition; this is the world. This is me. And it's okay. It is okay.’ you don't have to escape it. And if you don't have to escape something, you don't need the substances. You can just be yourself.”

Resources

Episode Highlights

Doug’s Philosophy on Food

  • We have control over what we eat.
  • Everything you put into your mouth is a life-or-death decision.
  • Some of Doug’s family members suffer from chronic diseases. He also lost his mother to stomach cancer.
  • Food is like a drug, and it affects every aspect of our lives.

How Doug Discovered Plant-Based Diet

  • He met a vegan in 1999, and he had stuck to whole foods, plant-based, vegan diet for 17 years.
  • Now he mostly eats raw sprouts and fruit.
  • He still eats steamed or cooked vegetables and whole grains. However, he no longer eats food with added fats, oils, and sugars.

Doug’s Sprouting Journey

  • Doug became a sprouter when he lived in the Mojave desert.
  • Within 30 days, 50% of his calories came from sprouts.
  • The following month, he didn’t spend any more money for food
  • Doug’s sugar cravings went down, his energy went up, and his intuition sharpened.
  • Because he had the peace of mind to think about what he wanted to do, he discovered his passion for sprouting. He then decided to write a book about it.

Sprouting for Beginners

  • Seeds are the source of all plant life on the planet.
  • The germination or sprouting stage is overlooked because it happens under the ground and takes time to bear fruit.
  • Many do not consider sprouts as a food source, only as garnish.
  • Doug is a big eater, but his body can tell him to stop when he’s overeating sprouts.

Benefits of Sprouts

  • Cruciferous vegetables have nutrients that can kill cancer cells.
  • Broccoli sprouts’ defensive compounds are also effective treatments for autism spectrum disorder.
  • Chia sprouts increase your fiber, antioxidant, and potassium.

Growing Sprouts

  • Sprouts can grow without sunlight and soil.
  • You can grow them in a jar. Just get a cheesecloth, add the seeds, and water them.
  • You only need to tend to them two or three times a day.
  • Sprouting makes healthy superfoods and juices more economically accessible.

Tips on Starting Your Organic Sprout Garden

  • Avoid seeds that have been sprayed with fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides.
  • Get organic seeds designed for sprouting because they have a high germination rate.
  • Buy seeds that have been tested for foodborne pathogens.
  • Listen to the full episode to learn how to sprout lentils, as well as their nutritional benefits.

Creating Recipes from Sprouts

  • Doug invites everyone to add sprouts in their meals.
  • The Sprout Book includes 40 raw, plant-based recipes that are 50% sprouts.

Sprouts for Sugar Lovers

  • Combine sprouts with berries, the lowest glycemic fruit.
  • If you like watermelon, eat it raw from the green to the red part.
  • You can also try dates and figs.
  • Doug sees no problem with sugar from fruits. But the more sprouts you eat, the less you'll crave sugar.

Cooking with Oil

  • Doug’s wife cooks with very little coconut or avocado oil.
  • When she cooks with oil and seasoning, Doug tends to overeat, which doesn’t make him feel good.

Watering Your Sprouts

  • Untreated and ozone- or UV-treated waters are good.
  • If your water is chlorine-treated, boil it first.
  • Tap, filtered, spring, and distilled waters are also good.
  • If you don't have access to filtered water, just use what you have. Eventually, you'll get alignment and start making better choices.

Why More People Should Start Sprouting

  • Sprouting minimizes packaging waste.
  • It saves land use, water use, and food waste.
  • It also doesn't involve animal slaughter.

How to Take Control of Your Health

  • Research the health benefits of sprouts.
  • Order organic sprouting seeds and experiment.
  • Slow down when you’re eating and think about where your food comes from.

Final Words

  • We can choose to be a victim or a victor.
  • It’s not about motivation. It’s about taking action that’s aligned with your purpose and mission.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[06:44] “My philosophy on food is that everything that you put in your mouth is a life or death decision.”

[33:08] “Sprouting can help equalize the food system whereas anyone can afford to buy seeds, add water, and then have their organic vegetable garden on their kitchen countertop in the size of a toaster oven.”

[56:39] “Seeds are these diamonds. Like we're sitting on them; they're right in front of our face. They're one phone call, one trip to the store, one Amazon sprout man, True Leaf Market order away. And you can get the seeds; you can get empowered. And who would believe that eating sprouts could change your life?”

[1:00:06] “Are you eating this because it is in your destiny and your divinity that you are choosing this with the full intention of your being? Or are you eating this because it's convenient or someone else is selling it to you?”

[1:10:16] “We can choose to be a victim, or we can choose to be a victor. And it's not about motivation; it's about action.”
