Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hi I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

Natural Healing Through Eastern Medicine with

Dr. Josh Axe

For centuries, Eastern medicine  has explored various methods of helping the body heal itself through natural processes. Despite this rich history, modern medicine generally frowns upon alternative therapies. However, there is more to alternative medicine — many of its concepts can improve your health through ways that other methods might not even consider. Understanding Eastern medicine better can help you tap into powerful natural techniques for maximizing your well-being.

In this episode, Dr. Josh Axe talks about the working theories behind Eastern medicine. He lends his expertise to explain the root causes of many diseases. Josh also discusses how psychological and spiritual interventions play a role in healing.

Listen now if you want to employ natural techniques for healing!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Find out what conventional treatments misunderstand about the nature of diseases.
  1. What are the three main health issues linked to your lifestyle?
  1. Learn how holistic approaches to medicine can promote complete healing.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Josh’s Book

  • He was passionate about the topic and spent significant time on his book.
  • The typical mindset is people receive medications that don't address the root cause of many diseases.
  • Josh thinks people need to come back to the concept of using food as medicine.

Western vs. Eastern Medicine

  • Western medicine focuses on fixing symptoms instead of targeting underlying disorders. Many people continue to experience additional adverse effects even with therapy.
  • In contrast, Eastern medicine takes a holistic approach by looking at root causes.
  • Many diseases involve various organ systems, and Western treatments might be too narrow to cover everything.
  • Eastern treatments incorporate psychological and spiritual approaches.

How Your Diet Can Cause Health Issues

  • The three most common issues arising from food involve the digestive, hormonal, or immune systems.
  • Food that is too complicated increases the effort your body has to exert during digestion.
  • Eating food rich in broken-down building blocks, such as amino acids, are great for maintaining health.

Food and Hormones

  • Consuming healthy fats is a powerful way to increase your hormones' effectiveness.
  • Cinnamon, fenugreek, and holy basil are useful herbs for managing insulin levels.
  • Milk thistle can remove synthetic estrogen-like compounds that might be causing your PMS.
  • If you fail today, remember that you can do the next right thing.

How Emotions Impact Your Health

  • Fear and worry can cause hormonal dysfunction and lead to health problems. For instance, worry can lead to indigestion.
  • Stress and self-hatred can also influence many immune diseases.
  • In contrast, positive emotions allow the body to heal itself better.

Strengthening the Immune System

  • Negative emotions relating to hatred tend to weaken the immune system. You need to embrace forgiveness if you don't want to have a dysfunctional immune system.
  • Increase your intake of yellow, orange, and green foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and some meat.
  • Lastly, stock up on nutrients such as zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin C.

Building a Positive Mindset

  • Despite 2020 being a bad year, you can start working toward a better 2021 by developing a positive mindset.
  • Josh has a daily spiritual triathlon as part of maintaining his positive mindset.
  • He begins with praises and gratefulness toward God, reads the Bible, then spends 10 minutes in prayer and meditation.

Your Purpose

  • People who lose their purpose tend to live shorter lives.
  • Finding and living your purpose is essential for a long and fulfilling life.
  • Josh's purpose is based on love, and his mindset also leads to better health.
  • He feels radically loved by God.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[09:36] “The thing about digestion is you want to consume foods that are easy to digest, and that are reparative.”

[11:03] “So if you want to heal your digestive system, eating loads of cooked vegetables, organic meat, certain fruits, like pears and blueberries, pumpkin—those are the most easily digestible foods.”

[14:49] “Every single emotion we experience affects the different organ systems both positively or negatively.”

[23:01] “If somebody's saying they want to care for their immune system, the number one thing they can do, the first thing, is forgive.”

[31:23] “One of the most important things I do for my own health—I do think the spiritual triathlon is a big part of it.”

Mark Nepo

The pandemic has wreaked havoc in our lives, robbing us of our comforts and routines. Despite everything that occurred in the past year, some are still in denial, claiming everything to be a hoax. In this episode, renowned poet and spiritual teacher Mark Nepo talks about social isolation and the feelings we experience in this new normal. He also discusses connecting with ourselves, being self-aware, and practicing our inner lives.

Tune in to discover how we can find the courage to reach out and move on from the fear within us!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Listen to Mark’s thoughts on the pandemic and how we can break free from isolation.
  2. Learn about spiritual practice and how it can transform your life.
  3. Understand the cost of not being authentic and how you can be more real.

Resources

Episode Highlights

About Mark’s Book of Soul

  • In this book, Mark integrates things he’s been exploring for years in other books.
  • It opens by saying we’re all here physically because of the love and courage of our mothers who gave birth to us.
  • Once we’re in the world, we go through second labor, which is the experience of a lifetime that births the soul on earth.

Great Love and Great Suffering

  • Right now we are becoming exhausted of our differences.
  • The old world before the pandemic is gone. We need each other, and we need to see past our differences.
  • When something is gone, there is grief and loss.
  • Some people get stuck in some of the stages of grief, like denial or anger.
  • We all need to move through those stages and accept that the old world is gone. We also have to accept and love each other to make our way forward.

Anger During the Pandemic

  • Often, anger is one of many responses to being hurt.
  • We have to face our hurt and talk about it so that we can heal and don’t return to anger.
  • People, especially in the West, tend to run away from feelings.
  • The heart is our greatest teacher — we need to feel what we have to feel and face what we have to face.

Real or Not Real

  • Nobody can tell anybody how to be in their spirit and heart — it’s all very personal.
  • The real work of self-awareness is so that we can fully be who we are and be connected to everything larger than us.
  • If we don’t have a way to connect who we are to all of life, then we’re untethered.
  • Thus, it becomes hard to find what’s real and what’s not.

Social Isolation and Losing Love

  • In medieval times, monks said they practiced their faith by falling and getting up.
  • When we’re lonely, we take the risk to reach out.
  • With social isolation, there’s like a clear wall that starts to grow around us. It takes courage to break that wall.
  • One of the things keeping us isolated is our want to have preferences. It’s like reading reviews before choosing a restaurant to eat at or a movie to watch — we don’t want to experience anything we don’t like.
  • Our preferences only make the clear wall around us higher. To break that wall of social isolation, we have to take quiet courage to reach out past our preferences.

On Honesty and Authenticity

  • With social media and dating apps, we just simply put our information out in the world for everyone to know. Many of us also tend to only show the highlight reel of our lives.
  • One of the rewards of being authentic is experiencing oneness.
  • It’s difficult for us to be honest because we fear getting hurt, rejection, or that we won’t be seen or heard for who we are.
  • Mark has learned, however, that the cost of not being authentic is greater. When you’re not who you truly are, a part of you starts to die.
  • Practicing our inner life deepens our roots and widens our trunk, so we won’t be uprooted whatever storms may come our way.

Mark’s Radical Love

  • Radical doesn’t mean on the edge, politically; rather, it means rooting and affirming growth.
  • Mark felt radically loved when he was going through his cancer journey.
  • He felt the love from so many people of all traditions and faiths that years later, he’s still not wise enough to know what religion worked and what didn’t.
  • So, he was challenged to believe in everything, and that has been the center of his work over the last 30 years.
  • Radical love is the light that connects everything.

5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode

[07:33] “We need each other, and we need the humility and courage to see past our differences and accept where we are to make our way forward.”

[11:51] “Often, anger is one of many responses to being hurt. And if we never face and deal with our own hurt, we will return to the anger but we’ll never get to the hurt, and if you don’t get to the hurt, you can’t heal.”

[13:16] “Only by having that courage to be with what we feel, to face what we have to face, and feel what we have to feel, can we discover that we are the same at heart.”

[34:09] “The more that we focus our energy and life force into getting into that state of grounding, that state of connection, and to that state of authenticity, we can really then connect to our own security and sense of being.”

[35:53] “We all share the same root system, which is why we have to take care of each other, because it’s all connected.”

Rising Above Digital Tribalism Through Self-Transcendence

with Wade Lightheart

Social media was originally designed to connect people, but it has arguably created more divisions than ever before. The unintended consequences of the digital age have contributed to tribalism’s resurgence. As people become more afraid to acknowledge the common thread that binds us all together, the need for self-transcendence becomes stronger than ever.

This week, Wade Lightheart shares how you can move beyond your tribe by looking deeper within yourself. Once you can accept your limitations and revitalize your spiritual connection, it becomes easier to practice empathy and be present for yourself and others. In the end, Wade stresses that we are all equal in the face of death.

Tune in to the full episode to move along on your journey to self-transcendence.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover the effects of tribalism and how to challenge your beliefs.
  2. Learn what being present means.
  3. How does Wade experience self-transcendence and radical love? Find out in the full episode.

Resources

Episode Highlights

The Resurgence of Tribalism

  • Everybody lives in their echo chamber that feeds their confirmation bias. The first step to rise above tribalism is to challenge your own beliefs.
  • The brain can only make decisions based on what it’s exposed to.
  • Tribalism has always been a collective heritage of humanity. Brought by technological innovations, social media has recreated the conditions of tribalism, which group people with similar associative biases.
  • Shackled in these self-reinforcing groups, people begin to fear showing their vulnerabilities.

Anger and Discernment

  • When people feel threatened, their fight-or-flight response is activated. The brain perceives a political argument in the same way it would assess a threat from a predator.
  • Computer programs manipulate your brain to hook you to the experience of pain and pleasure of strongly identifying with your tribe, resulting in deeper divides.
  • When pain becomes overwhelming, there’s a chance that people will surrender the need to identify with their tribe.
  • History shows us that unification can only be achieved with bloodshed and suffering.
  • It will likely get worse before it gets better.

On Spirituality and Humanity

  • According to Friedrich Nietzsche, the lack of connection to spirituality and an overarching principle of divinity increases the desperation for survival.
  • This makes a person incapable of acknowledging their non-existence. To accept death is to live truly.
  • Empathy is a crucial component of human interaction and separates us from animals.
  • Grace and humility are essential in your journey of acceptance.
  • You have to come to terms with your limitations before you can accept the shortcomings of others.

Wade’s Spiritual Journey

  • During his ongoing journey of self-discovery, Wade discovered an unpleasant aspect of his identity.
  • He brought it up with friends and colleagues, highlighting the importance of company in your spiritual journey.
  • Although he hasn’t resolved that issue yet, he’s willing to sit in its presence.

Being Present

  • For Wade, to be present means being simultaneously connected to the universe and going about his life on this material plane.
  • He experiences self-transcendence or achieves the highest state (nirvikalpa samadhi) in those rare moments during meditation, where he feels the edges of his mind crash.
  • Presence is activated by a deep desire to connect with no hidden agenda.
  • If you’re holding space for others because you’re waiting for a payoff, that’s not what ‘being present’ means.
  • Being present is to reach a point where forgiveness is unnecessary.

Fostering Kind Connections

  • To be kind to others, start with yourself. Examine your identity in the context of your concordant and aversive relationships.
  • When you challenge a person’s tribal beliefs, they may lash out and excommunicate you from the tribe.
  • However, recognize that you created that response in that person and the role you play in the chain of events.
  • We tend to excommunicate other people in our tribe that don’t want to connect with us.
  • It’s fine to come to an impasse and agree to disagree. Give up the need to be right and have an opinion about everything.

Sainthood vs. Self-Transcendence

  • Christian Western ideals push for sainthood or the perfection of the personality, while Eastern philosophy celebrates enlightenment or self-transcendence.
  • Wade feels that ‘transcendence’ is better than ‘sainthood’ in dealing with his own ‘garbage’.
  • He seeks to transcend himself to gain humility, thereby possibly transcending other people’s ‘garbage’ as well.
  • This process of transcending might lead to a point where he realizes that there was no ‘garbage’ at all.

The Mind–Body Connection

  • Practicing body discipline requires concentration and mental work.
  • Most people are focused on opening energetic systems but not on increasing the energy flow.
  • To engage in your opposite (Yin to your Yang) requires discipline and mental focus.
  • When you progressively strengthen the mind, it’s possible to reach the spiritual realm.
  • The spirit takes you beyond your physical and mental capabilities.

On Death

  • There’s a high aversion to death in the Western world.
  • Wade first experienced death when his sister was diagnosed with a terminal illness. He entered the health and bodybuilding industry to come to terms with this experience.
  • Death is the greatest equalizer.

Defining Freedom

  • Freedom is one of Wade’s greatest values, but it’s something he’s still working on.
  • After a breakup, he explored plant medicine, enlisted the service of Tony Robbins, and went through neurofeedback.
  • He realized that he wasn't working towards freedom but was only attached to the concept of it.
  • Wade discovered that he became the person he used to coach: a prisoner of his success.

How to Radically Love

  • The only way to experience radical love is to embody it.
  • You have to extend radical love to others first with no expectation of anything in return.
  • Wade experienced unconditional love during a past relationship with a partner who had a drug addiction.
  • He realized that to love a person radically means letting them live the course of their life without imposing your projections and expectations.
  • In his best moments, Wade would recognize radical love in his life, but he would cut himself off from it in his worst moments.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[03:09] “As opposed to broadcasting to everybody else how they need to fix themselves, we need to reverse the search engines. Stop seeking a confirmation of our beliefs and start challenging our own beliefs, starting first with yourself.”

[13:35] “So the first thing and the most important thing for people to get clear on themselves is that you're going to die and to accept that death. Now, once you accept that, only then can you really live.”

[25:51] “Presence for me is an idea and an ambition that you go and you get closer glimpses of it. And it's usually activated by empathy and it's usually activated by a deep desire to connect with someone in a way that's not self-serving.”

[48:07] “Death is the common element that we all share, we all cannot avoid, and what makes us all humans.”

[56:54] “The only way I can experience radical love is to become it myself, in myself... So if I want to be radically loved, the only way I can do that is to radically love so that I can actually experience the energy of it.”

Finding your purpose is quite an intimidating concept, so much so that we often brush it aside. Rather than confronting it, we tend to focus on superficial, mundane things instead . 3. Find out how loving life can fully heal your soul as Sahara shares her life and relationship experiences.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Rosie Congratulates Sahara

  • Sahara says that living the Dharma is about showing up fully to any experience before you, even if it means having to do the things you do not want at that time.
  • Sahara thanks Rosie for being a part of the process.
  • Rosie praises Sahara’s book and talks about Sahara’s journey on coming to and loving life through the book.

On Feeling Lost and Detracted

  • Life is not meaningless although the path of loving life and finding meaning can be so daunting that most of us tend to give up.
  • Sahara initially loved working with NGOs and human rights and going to law school to become an international human rights lawyer. However, as soon as she was in the NGO cubicle, she began hating it. She did not feel like helping people and sharing her gifts.
  • Instead of looking inwards, she would go around asking other people what they thought her purpose was.
  • Sahara started questioning her life purpose and even underwent hormone replacement therapy.

How Sahara’s Health Issues Brought Her to Ayurveda

  • Sahara’s body experienced several health conditions that came with perimenopause at a very young age.
  • Because of her condition, she became obsessed with finding other ways to heal.
  • Her obsession with getting her body back in balance brought her to discovering Ayurveda. This also prompted her to write her book.

On the Dharma Archetypes

  • Sahara talks about three elemental archetypes and how each type has a different path in terms of Dharma.
  • For example, air archetypes tend to have different manifestations of their Dharma throughout their lives. Dharma is your soul’s purpose. It is the energy that only you can carry.
  • Fire archetypes are more likely to have one idea and just really go for it. However, this does not mean that they have no other interests.
  • The third archetype, earth, tends to have a purpose in their relationships and connections with people. Motherhood is a part of their Dharma.

How Your Dharma is Non-Linear

  • Sahara shares that your Dharma is not a one-time process.
  • Your Dharma brings you to a purpose, which you can focus on for years and years before you eventually step away from it.
  • She related the Dharma process to a mountain range–you reach your first peak and see that there’s more.
  • To hear more about the non-linearity of Dharma, tune in to this episode.

Remembering Your Dharma

  • Your Dharma is not something you find but rather remember throughout your life. It is all about loving life.
  • Sahara relates your Dharma to being your naked body, stripped from all the superficial things and self-doubt.
  • Your Dharma is when you unravel and remember your truth.

The First Four Stages of Dharma Discovery

  • The first stage is the self-awareness stage that something needs to change.
  • The second stage is self-improvement once you become aware.
  • In the third stage of your Dharma discovery, you shift from self-care and self-improvement to getting to know yourself.
  • Once you find your practice, you have reached the fourth stage.
  • Tune in to this episode to learn more about the first four stages of Dharma!

Hitting the Fifth Stage of Your Dharma

  • The fifth stage is Dharma embodiment wherein your inside and outside match, and you no longer keep your intent and purpose a secret.
  • At this stage, everything in your life has to be in alignment, including your relationships with people. Otherwise, Sahara shares, those things not in alignment will hold you back.
  • In stage five, it is about Dharma as a way of serving humanity. Here, the focus is “we.”
  • This where the “sacred doing” works where the “being” and “doing” merge.
  • Listen to the podcast and discover the truth behind the fifth stage of Dharma!

When Your Family Doesn’t Support You

  • Sahara talks about how your views can be entirely different, especially if your parents are part of the baby boomer generation. The focus then was survival.
  • She discusses Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
  • Sahara says it takes a cultural and generational understanding and compassion to help us make sense of these differences.
  • Sometimes the worst thing that could happen, like becoming estranged from your family, can be the best thing for you.

On Partners Not In Alignment with You

  • Sahara talks about her previous relationship with her ex, who was not only unspiritual but also destructive. He actively prevented her from living her Dharma.
  • Eventually, she found a partner who supported her without her having to ask.
  • Sahara says when you’re surrounded by people who are in alignment with you, it gives you the surge to do more.

Letting Go and Allowing Your Dharma to Evolve

  • It’s important to allow our Dharma to evolve, rather than hold onto something we’ve been working on for so long.
  • Even if you’ve been working on something for quite a while, it can eventually burn you out because it’s no longer your purpose.
  • Letting go of what you currently have gives space for the next iteration of your Dharma to come through.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[2:41] “Living your Dharma is about showing up fully to any experience before you, even if that experience is working in a job that you don’t totally love at that time.”

[14:15] “But your Dharma is not a one-time process. It’s more like a mountain range.”

[15:25] “With living your Dharma, it’s not so much about even finding it, it’s more remembering it.”

[21:24] “However, if you’re working this career that’s in no alignment with your gifts, who you are, and your strengths–and you have this whole other world of interests, it starts to feel like you’re a Jaguar that’s stuck in a cage.”

[35:14] “Sometimes the worst thing that can happen to you is actually the best thing that can happen to you because that’s what makes you free.”

Episode Highlights

Holiday Insights

  • Although Christmas might be different this year, it’s still possible to create that spirit of community and giving.
  • Don’t forget to give yourself a present this year, too.
  • Rosie’s gift to herself is disconnecting from technology.
  • Tess recalls fond childhood memories of Christmas and reflects how she can recreate that atmosphere this year.

Meditative Practices

  • For Rosie, painting by the numbers is a meditative practice.
  • On her part, Tess slips into meditation by writing poetry and knitting.
  • A passage from Mark Nepo’s book highlights the significance of remembering and forgetting, emphasizing the importance of stillness and surrender.

Tess’ Biggest Lessons

  • Tess realized that instead of running around and trying her hardest to tick her to-do-lists, sitting still was more productive.
  • Even though she doesn’t chase after opportunities, they come her way regardless.
  • Tess also discovered that she didn’t like sharing her food.
  • Tess continues to explore different eating modalities as she learns more about her body.

Rosie’s Biggest Lessons

  • On her part, Rosie discovered that she could work from home effectively by creating a schedule and sticking to it.
  • Second, she learned that you can still make mistakes even if you’re working on improving yourself.
  • Instead of ignoring her flaws, she is slowly learning to accept them.
  • Any sort of change and transformation is highly uncomfortable.
  • Even as Rosie tries her best to get pregnant, she is still probing the motivations behind her desire to be a mother. She’s learning to surrender her attachment to what she believes her life ought to be.

Catching Yourself

  • Your mental state affects your ability to practice mindfulness, and falling victim to that reactionary impulse.
  • There are three voices in your head. The first is impulsive, the second voice calls for restraint, and the third is the voice of wisdom.
  • For Rosie, it’s not a matter of right or wrong but learning to observe the situation from a place of discernment.
  • Since we are egocentric beings, it can be hard to find and listen to that third voice.
  • Rosie admits that she occasionally catches herself listening to the first and second voices. However, she knows what to do to pull herself out of a negative spiral.

Taming The Ego

  • Your ego is the primary source of your emotional upheaval.
  • Learn to discern when it’s the right time to speak up and use your voice.
  • Your emotional distress may not be evident to your partner. Find a healthy way to express that energy. Otherwise, those feelings will fester and affect your relationship.
  • Although becoming aware of your ego can be uncomfortable, it is also a humbling experience.

5 Powerful Quotes

[TESS] 16:46

“I realized that all the things that I was running around doing, kind of the frenetic to-do list wasn't as necessary as I thought it was. As I stopped driving back and forth in town like a ping pong ball and sat a little bit more still and just, you know, stayed home more, I realized that was enough.”

[TESS]17:33

“I do believe that the universe is on my side. And that if there's something that I need to come to me, it will. So that's one thing that 2020 has taught me.”

[ROSIE] 23:17

“By no way do I have things figured out. And I often see my defects of character. And I always strive to work on the things that aren't serving my highest good, but I learned to actually accept that this year as opposed to just bypassing it.”

[ROSIE] 29:24

“So it's not a choice of doing what's right or doing what's wrong. It's really a matter of how can you observe the situation from a wise place, from a place of wisdom and truly a place of discerning.”

[ROSIE] 33:35

“That energy needs to be expressed one way or another. Our emotions need to be fully realized in order for them to have a complete cycle, or they're going to live inside your body.”
