Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hi I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

Episode Highlights

When Someone Says ‘You Need to Calm Down’

  • It’s easy to get even more inflamed when someone tells you to calm down.
  • However, what that often means is they are the ones who need to calm down. They don’t know how to handle your energy, so they’re crying out for help.
  • Instead of saying ‘I can see you’re upset’ or ‘You need to calm down,’ it’s better to say ‘I hear you, I can feel how upset you are, so I’m going to take a step back.’
  • This statement is more empathetic and allows you to neutralize a heated situation.

Ferocious Courage to Tell the Truth

  • Jacqui’s book is subtitled: ‘A bold path to ferocious courage and rule-breaking kindness that can heal the world.’
  • She came up with this statement, after realizing how ferociously courageous it was to tell the truth about herself and confront her story.
  • This ferocious courage to tell the truth transcends into rule-breaking kindness.

How to Confront Someone with Your Truth

  • If we want to tell the truth and have it go well, we’ll have to wire ourselves with ‘I’ statements.
  • Our feelings are facts. So, no one’s going to be defensive about your feelings.
  • Also, you have to let go of the outcome after you tell the truth. You can’t manage how others will react—you can only handle your dynamics.

Modelling Truth-Telling

  • Jacqui envisions a world where we raise children to be truth warriors.
  • It’s hard to tell the truth, but it’s necessary to prevent violence.

Hard and Fierce Love

  • This type of love takes risks and makes your head hurt.
  • It applies to having tough but necessary conversations.
  • When we fiercely love ourselves, we are less brittle, competitive, and jealous.

Practicing Fierce Love Even Amidst Grief

  • We are at a time where to be human in the world is to be in a state of grief.
  • Grief causes us to be angry, sad, or brittle. We tend to do things we don’t normally do when we are grieving.
  • So, we should exercise a bit more compassion and a bit less judgment towards ourselves and others.

Being Curious About Others’ Truths

  • Every person in the world has their own interior life that you’re simply bumping into. Their experience is likely not about you, but it’s real for them.
  • So, it’s crucial not to dismiss their truths, but to explore them.
  • We’re on our separate journeys, and the person you’re interacting with may not be at the same place as you.
  • What’s important is to keep modeling the behavior you hope for.

Dealing with Resentment

  • Resentment stems from the gap between what you hope for and what is.
  • The best way to fill this gap is self-love.
  • If we exercise our self-love muscles, we can be there for ourselves when other people fail us.

How Dr. Jacqui Feels Radically Loved

  • Jacqui feels radically loved by her source, God.
  • She believes that God will never leave her, and she is peaceful that she has somebody with her all the time.
  • She also emphasizes the radical love she feels from her family.

5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode

[3:24] “When we are in that threat place, that danger place, ‘Calm down’ inflames; ‘I can hear you, I can feel you, I can see you’ is empathy.”

[6:00] “Ferocious courage is to just show ourselves to each other, our needs, our wants, our desires, our fears, our dreams, our hopes, our passion, our sensuality.”

[13:09] “We can build bridges, we can create a deeper understanding by coming from a state of love and kindness.”

[22:59] “We just don't have to be so strung out about the other person's stuff, because it's their stuff, not yours.”

[30:44] “That's resentment: the gap between what I hoped for and what is. So how do you fill that gap?”

Understand Emotions and the Consequences of Transference with long time listener

Nicky Sciortino

Have you ever been mad at someone who hadn’t done anything to you? Or perhaps felt that someone was upset at you for no reason? Everyone handles negative emotions differently — some people respond with forgiveness and mindfulness. However, sometimes we hold those negative emotions inside us. If we don’t  , we pass them onto others and get angry at people who don’t deserve it. This phenomenon is called transference.

In this episode, Nicky Sciortino discusses transference and its significance in our lives. She also encourages us to examine our emotions and acknowledge if we have committed transference before. Accepting ourselves is only half of the battle. Nicky guides us into finding solutions to avoid redirecting our negative emotions and feelings to others.

If you want to understand emotions, and reconnect with your authentic self, stay tuned to this episode!

Episode Highlights

Nicky, an Avid Listener of Radically Loved

  • Nicky incorporated the lessons she learned on the Radically Loved podcast in her yoga classes.
  • She loved listening to the podcast, especially during the pandemic, where she couldn't talk to her friends as much.
  • Listening to the show was like getting to have girl talk with her friends.

About Transference

  • Transference refers to redirecting the feelings you have from one person to another individual.
  • You know you’re on the receiving end because you can’t find a reasonable explanation for the other person’s behavior.
  • Nicky experienced transference when she joined a yoga class led by an upset instructor. Tune in to the full episode to hear the story!
  • Nicky went back to what she learned from Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements. One of these lessons is don't take anything personally.
  • Projecting is different from transference. It refers to attributing your negative emotions and qualities to another person.

Nicky’s Experience of Committing Transference

  • Nicky had a student who kept getting under her skin. She can't figure out why.
  • After Nicky's yoga class, a student roughly 30 years her senior would frequently ask her basic questions about the class, or for personal advice.
  • Instead of reacting negatively, Nicky took the time to examine herself and understand emotions.
  • When you lash out at someone, you're expressing your pent-up negative emotions. It’s your responsibility to understand why you react the way you do.

Not Everyone Can Be a Teacher

  • People practice yoga to feel nourished, filled, and connected to their bodies and community. It's not a space to be criticized or dismissed.
  • Yoga teachers wield a lot of power and influence. Therefore, they carry a lot of responsibility.
  • We should focus on quality instead of the number of yoga instructors.
  • Yoga teachers must actively pursue their yogic path to teach a more profound type of practice.

Understand Emotions, Be Aware of Transference

  • The topic of transference reminded Tessa of Ram Dass’s quote: "I would like my life to be a statement of love and compassion—and where it isn't, that's where my work lies.”
  • Examining ourselves if we committed transference is difficult and scary because it makes us vulnerable.
  • Yoga teachers should be aware when they redirect negative emotions to others.
  • Many tools can help you avoid transference. Peel back the layers of the onion, understand emotions, and scrub yourself!
  • When you’re a recipient of transference, remember that it’s the other person’s issue and not yours.

Continue Reflecting on Ourselves

  • It's crucial to continue examining ourselves and help others do the same. Take accountability and invite in that compassion and self-study all at once.
  • There may not be a pot at the end of the rainbow, but it’s beautiful to see ourselves evolve through time.
  • Working on ourselves allows us to live an authentic life.
  • In unraveling our embedded thoughts and beliefs, we become fully present.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[13:35] “...we're all works in progress. We all make mistakes — and how do you learn from it?”

[21:43] “When you're able to take care of your own demons, they don't become triggers anymore.”

[22:34] “Whenever somebody makes you angry, remember that they're an empty boat. That anger exists inside of you. It's your job to understand those triggers. It's your job to not be the reactor.”

[24:42] “If people were more conscious and awake about their own personal experience, we wouldn't have as many unfavorable interactions with other people.”

[37:46] “The whole purpose of doing all of this is to unravel all of those embedded thoughts and beliefs and transform them into exactly what is present.”

Episode Highlights

Reason for Increasing Women’s Fertility Struggles

  • Women are delaying when to have children. They make sure we feel professionally, personally, and spiritually ready before deciding to have children.
  • Women are becoming more open and vocal about their fertility journey.
  • It used to be taboo to talk about fertility struggles. But now, it’s becoming a common thing to talk about.

Pregnant at 35 or Geriatric

  • There’s a notion that women need to have kids before 35. Otherwise, they will be considered geriatric.
  • Reaching 35 increases the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and pregnancy complications.
  • Health is more critical in increasing the chance of a successful pregnancy at any age.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

  • IVF is an excellent option for women struggling with natural pregnancy or who have a fallopian tube problem.
  • One branch of IVF is freezing eggs and doing fertility preservation.
  • The IVF process takes about two weeks. It involves taking medication to have the body get overstimulated and grow more than one egg.
  • Egg retrieval happens after two weeks of daily medication.
  • The process only involves around three to four doctor’s visits. It’s often a successful option depending on a woman’s personal fertility journey.

Embryo Banking

  • Embryo banking involves doing multiple IVF cycles in a row.
  • An embryo is a fertilized egg.
  • Many women in their mid to late-30s who want to have multiple children take part in this process.
  • We also refer to the fertilized eggs collected in this process as “embryos for the future.”

Optimizing IVF Success

  • It becomes hard to be successful with IVF as women get older.
  • Changes in both the health and number of eggs start in the mid-30s.
  • IVF becomes a challenge for women in their early 40s because of the diminishing egg number and quality.
  • It’s best to make an appointment with a fertility doctor for assessment sooner rather than later.

IVF Cycle Success Rate

  • Younger women are more likely to undergo fewer IVF cycles and find success.
  • Ovarian reserve involves undergoing blood tests and ultrasound to check for the egg count.
  • The higher the egg count is, the better.
  • Not everybody’s IVF journey is the same. The individual woman and the results of their partner’s screening are matters of consideration.

Male Fertility Testing

  • Men’s fertility doesn't get affected as much as women get by age. However, reaching the age of 45 may show some increased risk for future offspring.
  • About 20 to 25% of infertility cases involve a male factor component.
  • It’s crucial to have the male partner assessed as well from the initial visit.
  • Men can make sperm every couple of months. However, it also takes some time to treat abnormalities once they get detected.

Options for Male Infertility

  • The treatment can include taking multivitamins, hormone medication, and surgery like a testicular biopsy to extract sperm.
  • The field of male infertility has developed significantly over the last years.
  • Men doing semen analysis is just as important as women doing fertility testing.

Initial Steps for Women’s Infertility Treatment

  • Fertility assessment becomes necessary for women under 35 who have been trying to get pregnant for over a year.
  • There’s a 20% chance to get pregnant every month if everything’s healthy and normal.
  • Doctors recommend doing a fertility evaluation for women in their mid-30s who have been trying for six months.
  • Fallopian tube issues, fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and irregular menstrual cycles should be addressed by a fertility doctor.

How to Optimize Women’s Chance of Pregnancy

  • Know whether you fit under normal parameters or infertility.
  • Check with a fertility doctor for baseline testing if there's anything you're worried about.
  • Make sure to take prenatal vitamins and lead a healthy lifestyle.
  • Pregnancy puts stress on the body. Being healthy helps ensure a successful and uncomplicated pregnancy and postpartum course.

Options for Women with Low Egg Count

  • Having very low egg counts can mean not growing enough eggs for a successful IVF cycle.
  • The first option is to try and see how you will respond with IVF.
  • Another option is taking oral medications and combining them with insemination. It tries to get you to grow only two or three eggs.
  • The third alternative is donor egg therapy or treatment. It involves using eggs from a woman donor who’s typically in her 20s.
  • Women can purchase donor eggs, fertilize them with a partner donor sperm, and carry on with the pregnancy. It works for women of different ages.

Fertility Treatment Financial Options

  • Jessie's clinic Reproductive Biology Associates (RBA) is part of the Prelude Fertility Network.
  • The Prelude Fertility Network offers discounted rates for egg freezing ranging from $9000 to $11,000 per cycle.
  • RBA also offers discounted rates for multiple IVF cycle packages.
  • Patients can also apply for loan programs and other financing options.
  • There are many fertility treatment grants for women diagnosed with cancer.

How Dr. Jessie Became a Fertility Specialist

  • Jessie wanted to be a physician from a young age. She came from a family of doctors.
  • She used to joke that she doesn’t want to be an OB-GYN because she doesn’t want to deal with hormonal women.
  • She immediately realized it was where she wanted to be during her infertility rotation during medical school.
  • Her job is to figure out how to take the stress off the patient's journey and get them pregnant. Tune in to the full episode to hear more about Dr. Jessie's job!
  • She doesn’t feel she’s working because she’s having fun helping women create babies.

5 Powerful Quotes

[19:32] “Remember that even though there are traditional statistics of how women's egg number declines with time, not everybody is exactly like the statistic.”

[20:02] "I think the biggest message overall is although it can be really intimidating to sit down with a fertility doctor and hear what might be wrong, or what might not be a normal result, it's really helpful because there's a lot of different options that are out there."

[29:08] “While it's such a hard journey, I think it's really called a journey for a reason because for most women, it's not an easy thing. And there are bumps along the way but most of the time we are able to achieve that success at the end..”

[33:50] “The universe works for us and not against us. And I think we see that by looking around in the world, in the environment, all the support of friends and family, especially for people going through fertility journeys.”

[34:00] “We don't operate as independent beings, I think we are so shaped by the environment we were raised in and the community that's around us.”

  1. Find out how Rosie and Tessa feel radically loved by listening to the full episode!

Episode Highlights

Integrating Wisdom and Experience

  • Embodying knowledge is key when imparting it to another.
  • Mere pieces of training are inadequate in compensating experiences.
  • Wisdom comes in lived experience. Without the experience, a person would encounter more issues than necessary.
  • We have to be a ‘seasoned captain’ with an ‘equipped vessel’ to survive the tide.
  • Becoming an expert at something is a ‘marathon’, not a ‘sprint’.

Process of Applying Knowledge

  • Imitate, integrate, and then innovate from your mentors’ learnings.
  • Have a mentor to mimic their teachings.
  • Integrate the knowledge and put it into practice.
  • Lastly, apply the teachings and practices of your own accord when you pursue something.

Searching for the Right Mentor

  • When finding your mentor, assess it with the way they integrate their teachings.
  • Utilize your instinct when choosing the right mentor for you.
  • Embody and integrate the teachings of your mentor.

First-time Experiences

  • Perfectionism shouldn’t stop us from delving into our pursuit.
  • Being uncomfortable when attempting a new vocation is part of the process.
  • First attempts are always the hardest.
  • Some people are born with it, while others need to work harder to catch up.
  • Wearing the beginner’s hat is a humbling, yet important experience to have.

Signs of a Good Mentor

  • A good teacher tells you the difficulty of being in the learning process.
  • Someone handing you your career on a silver platter won’t last you long in the industry.
  • Achieving something substantial in life needs to stand the test of time.

Rosie’s Meeting with Her Book-Writing Agents

  • Her psychic advised her to participate in a writer’s conference.
  • During the conference, she proceeded to book pitch meeting sessions with three different agents.
  • At first, she was unaware that a book proposal was required for the pitch sessions. Immediately, she created the proposal consisting of two pages through Google Docs.
  • Her first rejection left her devastated. An agent told her that the meeting was a waste of both of their respective times.
  • However, she met a person who granted her hope after the embarrassment. Listen to the podcast to find out how finding the right person guided Rosie through her book-writing journey.

Rosie’s Lessons from Harsh Realities

  • She wouldn’t have changed the interaction she had with her first agent.
  • The harshness was exactly what she needed to fuel her passion and proceed.
  • The reality is that people would usually judge a person by their outward success instead of analyzing the work that has led to their current standing.
  • Once you’ve accomplished your dream, external validation suddenly doesn’t even matter anymore.

Rosie’s Meeting with the Right Mentor

  • You meet mentors at unexpected places.
  • If it wasn’t because of her psychic’s advice, she wouldn’t be who she is right now.
  • The late Michael Stone was also the reason she started her own podcast.

Tessa’s Closing Thoughts

  • It’s never too late to delve into a new pursuit and learn something from it despite the failure.
  • Transform the negative criticisms into a learning experience.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[10:14] “A captain with a well-equipped vessel that's not been seasoned, is dangerous.”

[20:41] “I feel like when we're not having those moments of discomfort, we're getting really settled in our little cozy blanket of staying the same.”

[28:32] “Google is your best friend when you have no idea where to start.”

[45:57] “We encourage you to utilize your own internal experience, use your wisdom, find the people in your life that are going to help you get there.”

[47:51] “What I guess I would say is how I'm feeling is that it's never too late to try again, to pick it up to fail again, and learn something new.”

Episode Highlights

What Led Kushal to Write a Book

  • It took Kushal almost 20 years to tell On a Wing and a Prayer’s story.
  • Prior to 9/11, Kushal was deep into the rat race of wanting to live the American dream. He worked in Wall Street and had a type-A personality.
  • His miraculous 9/11 escape woke him up. At that moment, he began questioning the status quo.
  • Kushal stumbled upon the journey of breathwork and meditation, which changed his life. He believes it’s worthwhile to share what he has experienced with the world.

Going through the Motions of Life

  • Going through the motions of our careers is a strange self-fulfilling prophecy.
  • The more you succeed, the faster the currents drag you along. You’ll wake up one day, and 20 or 30 years of your life have gone past.
  • As humans, it is supposedly in our nature to evolve.
  • Yet, it often takes a momentous event for us to drop the monotonous, mundane rat race and aspire for something bigger.

On a Wing and a Prayer

  • The book title’s double meaning roots from Kushal’s interest in aviation.
  • WWII pilot Hugh Ashcraft Jr. came back from the enemy war-front while operating a damaged plane. He radioed the tower: "I'm coming into land on a wing and a prayer."
  • Kushal thought that Hugh Ashcraft Jr.’s experience was analogous to his story.

Being a First-Time Author

  • The feedback on his book has been very encouraging.
  • He wanted to put himself out there with no filters and tinted glasses. Kushal calls it “open kimono” writing.
  • He had no process in writing the book; the book wrote itself.
  • Digging through the memories of 9/11 was the most challenging part of writing. Kushal also had difficulty with the chronology of events.
  • Overall, he enjoyed the book writing process.

Kushal’s Definition of Spirituality

  • To Kushal, being spiritual is being natural in any circumstances.
  • A spiritual practice, in essence, is about being in touch with yourself.
  • Life becomes so natural and in a flow state when you’re in touch with yourself effortlessly.

The Impact of the Pandemic

  • The pandemic evoked very similar emotions from that of Kushal’s 9/11 experience.
  • It was the same familiar walls narrowing in. But his response to it was very different from the first time around.
  • It was much more effortless and seamless to go through without bogging him down completely.

Having a Spiritual Practice

  • The pursuit of joy, desires, and ambitions is not mutually exclusive to meditation and spiritual practice.
  • Kushal previously had a wrong notion that meditation was anti-progress. He thought he had to give up everything to meditate.
  • Even taking 20 minutes out of the day for your spiritual practice can make everything much more vibrant.

What He Wants Readers to Feel After Reading the Book

  • Kushal wants readers to feel that if he can do it, anyone can.
  • Getting into a still state of mind is not something that requires years of practice.
  • We all have it; it’s only a matter of uncovering it through a little time commitment for your spiritual practice.
  • He wants every soul on the planet to experience a thoughtless state of mind, as it is a source of creativity, productivity, and liveliness.

How to Get Unstuck

  • First, look at life as a game. Perceive it as something you go through without emotions.
  • Second, adopt a practice—anything that will get you out of it.
  • Unpleasant things in life will always happen. How you go through it will depend on the conditioning of your mind.
  • It's the patterns of our minds that keep us stuck to something. You will move without feeling stuck if you remove the grip of that conditioning in your system.
  • Figure out your own modality. What worked for Kushal is the SKY breath technique.

SKY Breath-Based Technique

  • SKY is a breathing technique that makes use of the rhythms of our breath. It introduces coherence and harmony within ourselves.
  • Our physical, cognitive, perception, memory, intellect, and ego functions go out of whack as life happens to us.
  • A few minutes of SKY breath meditation brings them into a rhythm.
  • Naturally feeling in the moment is feeling unstuck for Kushal.
  • Feeling unstuck becomes natural even after just a few days of practicing the technique.

No Such Thing as “Too Busy” for Meditation

  • We have a lot of time on our hands. We're never too busy to meditate.
  • For an arrow to tear forward, you have to pull it back. Taking a few minutes out of the day to connect with yourself is key to effectively showing up in life.
  • Mental hygiene is also just as important as physical hygiene.
  • The information we used to consume in 30 years, we now consume in 3 months. The world demands more of us, so we need to take more care of our mental health.
  • It’s critical to keep our vital force and energy up. Breathing and a calm state of mind are crucial yet ignored sources of energy.

How Kushal Feels Radically Loved

  • Being in the moment is how Kushal feels radically loved.
  • It’s being grateful that the universe is loving us unconditionally in every moment.
  • Feeling grateful and being aware of it brings that love.

5 Powerful Quotes

[03:23] “If our nature is to evolve, we’re all moving, step-by-step evolving towards a higher purpose, then why does it take a momentous event, maybe a loss or a 9/11, for us to wake up and ask that bigger question that actually moves us toward our goal?”

[09:36] “To me, being spiritual is being natural in any circumstances, being yourself no matter what.”

[10:17] “When you’re in touch with that delicate space within you, I think everything that you do in life just becomes so natural and normal. It just flows.”

[14:27] “Even wanting to enjoy the world, wanting to enjoy life and the pursuits, desires, and ambitions, they’re not mutually exclusive to your practice of meditation.”

[22:12] “For an arrow to tear forward, you have to pull it back a little bit.”

Episode Highlights

A Little About Gerardo

  • Gerardo is a yoga teacher with almost 300 hours of training.
  • He also has an engineering job.
  • Yoga is his passion.
  • He dreams of opening a yoga studio but is unsure if getting a studio is his dharma or would be nothing more than fueling his ego.

Defining Ego

  • The ego is a klesha — one of the five afflictions of the mind. It’s a desire for more pleasure.
  • The other four are ignorance, attachment, aversion, and fear of death.
  • When you operate from any of these states, it’s going to cause suffering.
  • The ego is a part of us that desires validation. It's an insatiable type of energetic or power-driven acquisition.
  • When we feed our ego, we feed a part of ourselves that isn’t serving our highest good.

Defining Dharma

  • Your dharma is your path, journey, destination, or unique pathway to achieving enlightenment or happiness.
  • It is a predetermined path that you instinctively acquire.
  • Straying away from your path can cause unhappiness.

Ego vs. Dharma

  • Operating from the ego is very self-serving.
  • Meanwhile, following your dharma is self-serving while also being in the service of others.
  • When you follow your dharma, you do act without any expectations.
  • Your ego serves your worldly or fleeting desires. Your dharma serves your spiritual desires.

Differentiating Ego and Dharma

  • Ask yourself, "would I do this if I wasn't getting paid?" or, "would I do this if I knew nobody would ever see it?"
  • If you answer yes, then it's a higher calling. It's your dharma — it's meant to be.
  • Play the whole thing in your mind. Imagine doing something without money, recognition, or attention.
  • There’s always going to be ego. What matters is how you utilize your ego to fuel what your purpose is meant to be.
  • The ego and dharma can work together in harmony if the ego does not take the reins.

Following The Path to What You’re Meant to Be

  • It's challenging to follow a path that can't pay your bills.
  • Rosie diversified her yoga career and stabilized the path she wanted to take.
  • For Rosie, once you find the gravitas, there is just you and success.
  • Rosie's advice is: dive in.

Gerardo’s Story

  • His yoga teacher training experience allowed him to discover that he has a well-developed ego and wanted to work on it.
  • He acknowledges that his ego helped him get to where he is, but it also hampers him.
  • Gerardo shares that he worries about anything that feeds his ego — he thinks it’s dangerous.
  • He gets vulnerable when his students acknowledge his work as a yoga teacher.

Rosie’s Response To Gerardo

  • Awareness of the ego is a step in the right direction to what’s meant to be.
  • There is a difference between being confident and being egocentric.
  • It’s okay to be recognized for helping others. What’s important is you don’t allow your ego to take over and prevent you from what’s meant to be.
  • Allow yourself to have the confidence to say you’re a good teacher. Be proud that you can help other people.
  • It’s still important to have the confidence to do something well. That confidence can inspire someone else to be confident too.

Tessa’s Response To Gerardo

  • It's a matter of knowing how to stay balanced and grounded even if our ego is getting fed.
  • The practices in your life that keep you grounded are your safety net.
  • We need our checks and balances to keep us honest.
  • When it comes to jumping into a new venture, practice the worst-case scenario in your head to see if you are open to failure and capable of adjusting.

Rosie’s Writing Journey

  • Rosie opens up about her journey of writing a book and dealing with final edits.
  • She shares how her ego made her feel that her work could be better due to her perfectionist tendencies.
  • She explains to Gerardo that expectations coming from the desire to be perfect are premeditated resentment. Those come from the ego.
  • Rosie assures Gerardo that it is a challenge to follow your path without getting the ego involved. Awareness is critical.

5 Powerful Quotes

[18:14] “There’s always going to be ego in whatever you do, right? But how are you going to utilize it to fuel what your purpose is? As opposed to, ‘allow the ego to take over and let the ego take the reins.’”

[22:14] "If we let the ego drive — like if the ego is in the driver's seat with the reins — we can become these people that are so far separated from our Dharma and our self that we don't even recognize that maybe we take a wrong turn, and it becomes very dark and scary and lonely."

[23:06] “Your character is a result of you living your Dharma.”

[29:44] “I think it’s ego [that] has helped me get there, but I can’t rely on that. It’s also hampering me.”

[35:00] “I think it’s really important to have confidence but to not let it become egocentric.”

About the Guest

Society has a lot to say about what women can and can’t do. Historically, women have always been more subject to absurd rules, constraints, and restrictions—things we’re still unlearning today. In this episode, Amina AlTai talks about her mission of helping women reconnect and come home to themselves. She shares how she healed from crashing and burning and how it led her to become a coach. Amina delves into woman empowerment, purpose, wisdom, community, faith, freedom, and self-care. She also discusses women’s relationship with money and guilt in attaining financial success.

Episode Highlights

The Power of Names

  • It’s worth mentioning that in honoring how people want to be addressed, we should be considerate of their pronouns and names.
  • We lose some of our identity when people mispronounce our names. A lot of whitewashing happens around the names of people of color.
  • People mispronounce Amina’s first name more than her last name.
  • Tune in to the full episode to hear about Rosie’s childhood struggle with her name!

How Amina Became a Coach

  • Amina started her career in marketing and brand management. She worked in Corporate America for a while before putting up her own agency.
  • In her late 20s, she was deeply codependent. Leading big teams and clients at her own expense led to a crash and burn.
  • Amina developed two autoimmune diseases; that became her "stop" moment. It made her conscious of the choices she had been making.
  • She then went on an "Eat, Pray, Love" year. She went back to school and studied coaching, nutrition, movement, and meditation to heal herself.
  • She realized she had to figure out how to teach the things she learned. So, Amina went on to create a corporate wellness company.

Learning How to Teach from the Fullness of Herself

  • After starting the company, Amina realized she was teaching only from a part of herself.
  • Amina started to reflect on how she could teach from the fullness of herself. She had a series of conversations with God about her purpose and mission.
  • Her curriculum is for female leaders and women of color who want to step into their purpose.
  • The work she has been doing is about woman empowerment and inviting women to come home to themselves.
  • Serving from the place of cultural, familial, and societal programming creates a disconnect. Amina’s work is about reconnection.

Getting Invited to Look at Her Life

  • We always get invitations to look at ourselves in different ways. But sometimes, we don’t go deeper because we take it to mean something else.
  • Amina’s invitation came during her late 20s in the form of autoimmune diseases.
  • The pivot in her early 30s was feeling depressed from an inner resistance.

The Biggest Issue with Connecting with Our Sense of Woman Empowerment

  • A barrier to connecting with woman empowerment is having full permission and feeling safe to show up in the fullness of your being.
  • Brittany Packnett Cunningham’s TED talk says we need community, curiosity, and permission to build confidence.
  • Woman empowerment requires that we permit ourselves to feel our own greatness.
  • We practice permission in the community through the lens of curiosity. Then, we take it to bigger stages and expressions.

Building a Community During a Pandemic

  • Amina is optimistic about seeing people again physically.
  • Currently, she’s living in a hybrid world where she meets with her clients and friends via Zoom and in-person.
  • She loves being in a community and is ready for more. Amina hopes that the world will be supportive of that soon.

What Wisdom Means to Amina

  • Wisdom, for Amina, is the connection, trust, and collaboration with our Godself.
  • She was disconnected from her Godself when she was starting her journey.
  • Empirical data and information do not equal wisdom. Wisdom is measured by our soul and our relationship with spirituality and a higher power.
  • The most transformational experiences for Amina in the last decade were her relationships with God, Godself, and wisdom versus knowledge.

The Lessons Amina Teaches

  • We teach the lessons we need most.
  • The lessons that remain part of Amina’s transformative process are choosing faith over fear and reaching freedom.
  • Many women don’t feel free. And this feeling interrupts our expression and success.
  • Amina knows it’s time to “do the work all over again” when she feels the lack of freedom stifling. She reflects on the areas she still needs to work around.

Nourishing and Taking Care of Ourselves

  • Many women feel like they have to give away everything they have.
  • Amina thinks holistically about nourishing herself. It involves spirituality, food, movement, boundaries, finances, community, and more.
  • The hours before 11 am is Amina’s non-negotiable God time. It’s part of her spiritual practice when she’s cultivating her godliness.

On Our Relationship with Money

  • Money is deeply spiritual. It connects to everywhere, including our relationship with energy and food.
  • Money isn’t just about money; it’s about what we can do and who we can help with it.
  • We have to understand our lineage of belief around money. Then, we have to identify the relationship we want to create with it moving forward.
  • Integrity with money is different for everyone. Amina is inviting people to get conscious of it.
  • Women reinvest up to 80% of their money into communities and families. Meanwhile, men reinvest only around 30%.

Amina’s Practice with Money

  • Amina’s money practice is spiritual.
  • The JARS system encourages you to have different jars for the valuable areas of your life. Then, you will redirect the percentages of money you earn into those jars.
  • Through this system, you see the energy of growth and momentum.

On a Woman’s Guilt Around Attaining Financial Success

  • Historically, it’s new for women to have autonomy around money.
  • We’re healing decades of women’s trauma around money in our generation.
  • Women are still trying to figure out money, its energy, and what it looks like for them.

What’s Next for Amina

  • It’s always a joy and honor for Amina to meet women she’s meant to work with.
  • She is launching a corporate offering for men on how to support women in leadership.
  • We need to educate the people around women so they can invest in women and in woman empowerment.

Amina’s Advice to Women Who are Figuring Things Out

  • Start with the self. How can you support yourself?
  • You can establish your relationship with yourself through journaling practice.
  • We need to be on our own team first before reaching out to the community.

How Amina Feels Radically Loved

  • Amina feels radically loved every day, knowing that God has invited her every single step of the way.
  • She knows that everything has been in service to her growth and the people she gets to teach.

5 Powerful Quotes

[06:23] “Careers and expressions aren’t linear. We get to follow the footprint of our soul and come home to ourselves. It doesn’t have to look one way.”

[13:00] “To build confidence, specifically for women, women of color, and marginalized communities, we need community, curiosity, and permission.”

[16:24] “Our soul has so much wisdom. Our relationship to spirituality and a higher power, there’s so much wisdom in there that we can carry forward.”

[18:09] “If I were to synthesize my work into sound bites, it would be perpetually teaching to choose faith over fear, and how all of this work really is a conduit to freedom.”

[31:59] “Establishing a connection with yourself first and foremost is one of the most powerful, loving, generous things we can do.”

Episode Highlights

Majo’s Background

  • Her family immigrated to the U.S. from Argentina when she was young.
  • Being an immigrant shaped her life. She feared that her parents would feel like leaving their country was a waste.
  • So, she worked hard at school to make them proud and happy.
  • When she graduated, she had an existential spiritual crisis and felt lost after not having any more rules to follow.

Big Catalyst Moment

  • Majo scored a 9 to 5 research job in Washington, D.C., which her father was happy about.
  • Upon seeing herself in the mirror wearing a black blazer and pants, she felt like she was wearing a costume.
  • That moment of disidentification became a big “aha” for Majo. It was when her consciousness started to shift.
  • Many epiphanies happened and stacked up in her twenties that allowed her to find her own path.
  • Yoga and meditation played significant roles in her awakening.

Working on Sustainable Change

  • She spent a decade trying to deprogram the good girl archetype that she built up until she was 20 years old.
  • The tools that helped her were breathwork, meditation, mindfulness, psychedelics, and design thinking.
  • Psychedelics enormously helped her see that she was caged in a hypermasculine capitalistic orientation.
  • She learned about the process of tinkering and prototyping while finishing her Master’s in Learning, Design, and Technology.
  • Majo brings together all these tools in her unique method of coaching.

On Psychedelics

  • At first, Majo thought that psychedelics equate to drugs and bad stuff.
  • After quitting her second job, she decided to go to Burning Man, a social experiment event in the desert.
  • Burning Man’s counterculture environment helped her as someone who was always in a system. It revolved around radical self-expression, gift economy, and spirituality.
  • There, a man in his 50s offered her “medicine and sacrament.” Being in a safe and sacred context, she trusted her intuition and took it.
  • This experience made her realize how much suppressed creativity she had. It became one of her biggest epiphanies.

Dismantling the Good Girl Archetype

  • For Majo, the process happened in many instances.
  • However, what accelerated the journey for her was understanding the five good girl myths.
  • Seeing these patterns in herself, her clients, listeners, friends, and family inspired her to write the book.
  • Majo believes that we are born into a patriarchal society with a very defined idea of what a girl and woman should be.

Good Girl Myths

  • We each all have our own dominant good girl myth.
  • For Majo, it’s the myth of perfection: having impossibly high standards for herself and other people.
  • Tune in to the full episode to learn more about the other good girl myths!
  • Journaling has helped Majo a great deal. Specifically, she tracks her menstrual cycle to see patterns.
  • She’s a huge proponent of taking action. It helps her see her other blind spots and continue to lean into her edges.

Writing the Book

  • A well-thought-out proposal and structure will help you keep the flow when working on manuscripts.
  • It was challenging for her to get her core argument down and reach conceptual clarity.
  • The highlight for her was the research part, going down from one rabbit hole to another.
  • She worked on writing only around three to four hours a day because of the required attentional focus.
  • Tune in to the full episode to learn about Majo’s writing schedule!

Advice on Creative Work and Going Through a Hard Time

  • Eliminate making as many choices as possible to prevent decision fatigue.
  • Creatives have the most boring routine. They adhere to this to focus on deep creative work.
  • It’s a good thing to be at a low point. It’s a sign that you’re undergoing a powerful transformation.
  • Be patient with yourself and have a lot of self-compassion.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[3:17] “Our engrainment was to follow the rules, keep your nose, you know, keep your nose to the grindstone, like, just don't ask questions, just do what you need to do.”

[8:02] “One of the things that I learned that blew my head off was the process of tinkering, and prototyping and that really helped me build a lot of creative confidence, and helped me undo a lot of perfectionism that I had somehow picked up.”

[18:10] “We're born into a patriarchal society that has a very defined idea of how a girl and a woman should be…but it's up to us to choose if that actually feels integrated, or actually feels right for us.”

[19:13] “My dominant good girl myth is the myth of perfection. So for me, it's having impossibly high standards for myself and other people, and not being able to sort of accept the messiness of life and the way things are.”

[30:49] “If you are going through a hard time right now... it's a good thing to be there and that you are most likely undergoing a powerful transformation. And there is light at the end of this tunnel.”

Books are a totally different medium from television shows, movies, and podcasts. They’re unique in the way that they require us to truly be immersed in the worlds they contain. We can’t multitask while reading and opening books . As a result, the ideas on every page infiltrate our DNA in a profound manner. So if you have any kind of question, there is probably a book out there that can provide the answers.

In this episode, Uli Beutter Cohen joins us to talk about books, and how they shape ourselves and allow us to peer into others’ realities. We also talk about how the universe finds ways to converse with us amid the loss of a loved one. She discusses her book, Between the Lines: Stories from the Underground, which was inspired by hundreds of subway conversations. Uli also highlights the importance of empathy in a world of othering.

If you want to know more about the power of opening books in finding answers, tune in to this episode!

Episode Highlights

Ray’s Passing

  • Uli shared her recent heartbreak of bidding farewell to her 18-year-old cat, Ray. Despite preparing a lot of things for her cat, it was still an unpleasant experience.
  • Knowing beforehand that her cat would soon pass away didn’t make it easier. She shares that you can’t escape losing someone, and so you just have to surrender.
  • A few days after Ray’s passing, Uli found a blue parakeet on the ground. She believes that he gave the bird as a gift.
  • This experience taught Uli that we must be ready for miracles that come our way.
  • Despite our loved ones passing, their love for us never disappears. Their love is alive. Tune in to the full episode to hear what other gifts Ray has been leaving Uli!

Subway Book Review

  • Uli started Subway Book Review seven years ago when she had just moved to New York City. She thought this space could help her understand why the city is so magical.
  • She chose the subway because the underground movements are the birthplace of so many human rights and artistic movements.
  • In addition, Uli finds the subway phenomenal for only moving forward. It’s also very democratic—everyone takes the subway.
  • What stood out to her was how many people were reading books on the subway.

Books and Accessing Others’ Minds

  • A lot of people read and start opening books mostly to escape into another world.
  • But for Uli, she used her book as a way to begin conversations with strangers on the subway and to know their thoughts.
  • Her interviews point out one thing: we are meant to equally receive all the love and radical acceptance available in the world.
  • The book contains conversations from people who are reinventing the status quo and dreaming up what can be. She believes these are the people we must listen to.
  • Listen to the full episode to hear more stories about these conversations!

Empathy and Othering

  • Othering refers to the separation of oneself from others. This concept is deeply interrelated with empathy.
  • You must start accepting and empathizing with yourself first so that othering can be a foreign concept to you.
  • Only after you start figuring out your relationship with yourself can you work out your place in the world.
  • People are meant to be a wonder for you. They should not be seen as separate entities.

Separating from Oneself

  • Most people live their lives preparing themselves for whatever the world brings their way.
  • In fact, productivity and self-help tools can sometimes get in the way of being still.
  • But because we don’t have an unstructured time where we can just be still and be present, we miss out on what the world has to offer.
  • Sometimes, divergence from our set paths is not coincidental but actually comes at the perfect time.

Books and Multitasking

  • There’s a lot of connection in social media.
  • But opening books and reading them is one of the few things you cannot multitask. It requires your entire being to be present.
  • Books infiltrate and shape you profoundly in a way that other forms of media can’t.
  • And if you have any kind of questions, there are books out there meant to give answers.
  • Thus, reading is for people who really seek answers to their questions.

Our Shared Realities

  • There are as many realities as there are people. Throughout the years, it is through books that we’re able to share these realities.
  • Uli wants to create a space for healing, opening our hearts, and exploring the mind.
  • Her book is a book of answers and possibilities.

How Uli Feels Radically Loved

  • Uli feels radically loved when, despite the chaos and a lack of control, she still shows up for herself and remains honest with herself.
  • She welcomes all emotions and difficulties, and she’ll take one day, one step at a time.

5 Powerful Quotes

[4:18] “When you know [death is] coming, it does not make it easier. It makes it crazier because you see it approaching, and there's no escape. There's no control in it, right? You have to just surrender. It's the ultimate surrender of all surrenders”

[10:18] “There is no end to the love … Human loss, pet loss, the love is still very much alive. Focus on that, as opposed to the grief of losing something because the love is not lost, the love is there.”

[11:14] “The entire universe wants to converse with us… And I think that it's very easy for humans to feel and actually to forget that we're part of nature and that we are part of the eternal universe.”

[18:16] “It starts with the relationship with yourself first. And then from there, you can figure out what your place in the world is.”

[22:15] “A book is one of the last things if not the only thing that you cannot multitask… Therefore, [it] infiltrates your DNA in a profound way. That is why books stay with us totally differently than… anything else we consume that is media.”

Episode Highlights

Dropping the F-Bomb

  • Some moments just make you go “fuck.”
  • For Tessa, it is a way for her to speak her mind freely. It is part of the process of expressing herself emotionally.
  • Sometimes, there are just no other words to express how we’re feeling that we end up cussing.
  • Rosie recalls a conversation with a friend and mentor about utilizing language efficiently in the full episode!
  • Being frustrated and irritated is a very human moment. No amount of training or experience can help you in the management of emotions when you’re feeling these.

Drawing Wisdom From Rosie and Tessa’s Photoshoot

  • Rosie and Tessa did a photoshoot recently for the podcast. Tessa felt awkward in front of the camera and asked Rosie for advice.
  • However, Rosie wasn’t always a natural in front of the camera. She actually doesn’t like being in the spotlight. However, she does it in service of being in service.
  • When she needs to be the center of attention, Rosie channels her dad, who was a vocalist.
  • Conveying someone else’s energy, like someone we look up to, is a way to think with more clarity, especially when we get stuck in our thoughts and feelings.
  • Channeling someone else allows us to draw wisdom from them and to zoom out from our narrow-mindedness at the moment.

The Feeling of Pressure and Overwhelm

  • Pressure is self-inflicted. Being aware of the pressure you’re putting on yourself is key to moving out of the overwhelm.
  • We tend to put so much weight into what other people think about us. It throws us into feeling overwhelmed and compressed.
  • Sometimes, all you have to do is pause for a moment and step away before you take it out on others or lash out.

Management of Emotions through Actions

  • Rosie’s solution is to list down all things you have to do, then classify them according to urgency, difficulty, and fear of doing it.
  • When you restructure your list and do things one by one, you can accomplish tasks sooner.
  • Notifications and reminder alerts can also cause pressure.
  • When these get overwhelming, take a moment to step away. Most of the time, things aren’t actually that big of a deal.

Dealing with Frustration

  • It’s a matter of perspective. Rosie shares how reminding herself of the important things helps her deal with frustration.
  • Listening to music is one way to shift your energy and move into a space that allows you to tune in with yourself and be more present.
  • It helps to be mindful about your own energy before interacting with other people, so you don’t inevitably interrupt somebody else’s space.
  • Tune in to the full episode to hear about Rosie’s altercation with a yoga teacher.
  • That story is a reminder that we falter, and that’s just being human. But we should always try to be mindful of our energy, so we don’t end up hurting other people.

5 Powerful Quotes

[04:36] “Utilizing your language in a more efficient way allows you to rise to your highest.”

[07:08] “I think it’s important for us to be able to talk about [feeling overwhelmed and irritated], and to try and find the wisdom in that experience, and not make ourselves feel bad for being human.”

[17:02] “The perspective of the outside wisdom, the outside person, the teacher, whoever it is that you look to as a point of reference, it’s not always assuming that we’re stepping into their shoes, but we’re drawing from their wisdom.”

[21:19] “We put so much weight into what other people think about us, our worth, and our work that we utilize that to compound our own feelings of not feeling enough, not feeling like we’re doing enough, not feeling like we’re accomplishing enough.”

[37:53] “Be mindful of your energy, especially when you’re feeling overwhelmed. That’s the wisdom.”

Episode Highlights

About Simon Hill

  • Simon lives near the beach in Bondi, Sydney.
  • Australia may seem scary and dangerous. But most of the dangers are overhyped.
  • Simon's partner, Tanya, also fears shark attacks despite their low probability of appearance.

The Beginnings of Simon’s Journey

  • Simon’s father was a professor. So, Simon grew up with a passion for science and scientific research.
  • At 15 years old, he almost lost his father to a severe heart attack. It turns out that Simon’s family has a history of cardiovascular disease.
  • This experience and a lack of knowledge made him feel disempowered. He felt like cardiovascular disease is determined solely by genetics.
  • Later on, Simon learned that lifestyle and environment play a more significant factor than genetics when looking at chronic diseases.

How Food Environments Affect Nutrition

  • Most people’s food choices are dictated by their food environment.
  • Malnutrition and food scarcity are a burden for many developing countries. As these countries develop, you can see a noticeable increase in obesity and diabetes.
  • Transnational food companies prioritize profits over health. They market ultra-processed foods towards the impressionable parts of society.
  • The government, then, must regulate the food market for a healthier society.
  • Convenience, cost, taste, and education also affect how people manage their diets. Education is most important in learning how to eat healthily.

Food for a Healthy Diet

  • The labels on commercially-available foods do not define food for a healthy diet.
  • Different studies show that healthy diets follow a consistent theme regarding how much fat, fiber, and protein a person should consume.
  • Various diets can reach this consistent theme and deliver optimal health.
  • Plants can replace animal products and processed food for a healthy diet.
  • Tune in to the full episode to hear about the health benefits of swapping calories from animal protein to plant protein!

The Gut Microbiome

  • There are trillions of microbes that live within the body.
  • A diversity in microbes is a sign of a healthy microbiome. It promotes a higher number of healthy bacteria and a more resilient ecosystem.
  • A diet rich in fiber can promote a healthy microbiome, because the soluble component of fiber is a prebiotic and serves as food for good bacteria.
  • In turn, these good bacteria produce different types of metabolites that affect the body. For example, short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate keep your gut lining intact.
  • Alternatively, you’re at risk for a leaky gut if your microbiome is not diverse.

On Prebiotics vs. Probiotics

  • Probiotics are live bacteria that have beneficial effects on their host. However, the bacteria and their effects are transient.
  • It’s much better to focus on having a diverse fiber-rich diet first before looking into consuming probiotic supplements.
  • Prebiotic substances are already in your gut. Having a good amount of them ensures that your digestive system is producing metabolites.
  • Increasing your fiber intake isn’t automatically beneficial. If your gut microbiome is on the weaker side, suddenly increasing your fiber intake may cause inflammation.
  • Simon recommends introducing fermented foods first to increase your microbiome diversity. Then, look at gradually increasing your fiber intake.

Dairy vs. Non-Dairy Products

  • Debates surrounding dairy consumption are far more nuanced than what we think.
  • The media often chooses engagement and popularity over a detailed, contextual discussion.
  • Dairy isn’t an essential food group. However, there’s no problem with having a little dairy in your diet.
  • Typical Western diets consume dairy products that are very high in saturated fats. In this case, it’s best to cut back on consumption.
  • If you’re able to, consider the ecological footprint that comes with dairy consumption. Simon believes that this is the strongest argument to reduce or avoid dairy products.

Low-Fat vs. Full Fat

  • Simon recommends low-fat when you have high levels of saturated fats.
  • It’s also best to ensure that the low-fat option you’re choosing is not processed, flavored, or sweetened.

On Planetary Health

  • The world as we know it is on the verge of the sixth mass extinction.
  • Currently, the species extinction rate is 165 times faster than during the end of dinosaurs.
  • This rapid extinction rate is a result of humanity's choices and living our lives.

How Simon Feels Radically Loved

  • Simon feels radically loved by the relationships and connections he has cultivated throughout his life.
  • Nature is also something that he greatly values. It deserves respect and love.
  • The environmental problems we see around us are reflective of our relationships with each other. If we can learn to be loving and compassionate, we can solve climate change.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[19:40] “Most people’s food choices are dictated by the food environment… The system’s broken in many ways.”

[25:44] “We see pretty consistently across the board when you are swapping calories from animal protein for plant protein, you're getting better health outcomes: lower risk of heart attack, stroke, lower risk of certain types of cancer, etcetera.”

[29:14] “The problem is, today, we're seeing a lot of people with various conditions lose the diversity in their microbiome. And in many ways, it's a micro sort of mirror of what's happening on a macro level; we're losing biodiversity on the outside world as well at the same time.”

[41:58] “You really need to listen to your body. If you're increasing the plant diversity in your diet, and you're noticing that perhaps you are feeling bloated or feeling like you have less energy, then it might be that you're dialing it up too quickly.”

[51:28] “Compared to the mass extinction that wiped out dinosaurs 65 million years ago, we are seeing species extinction at a rate of 165 times faster. And that is absolutely a result of the way that we’re living our lives.”

  • Her youngest is still in part-time preschool, so she only has a short window for writing. Having limited time helps her increase her focus and productivity.

Food for Creativity

  • A guiding principle of Run Fast, Eat Slow is the benefit of healthy fats for the brain.
  • Athletes often quickly deplete their food fuel, so they need nutrient-dense and heavy meals.
  • Elyse writes best with a healthy hearty breakfast with protein and good fats for brainpower.
  • Little kids especially need a good, high-fat diet for their development.

Elyse’s Morning Recommendations

Practice Your Psychic Ability By Trusting Your Intuition

We’ve all heard and read fairy tales, legends, and folklore. Whether passed on by word of mouth or read from worn pages of old books, we are aware of the concepts of magic and  . Witchcraft, tarot readings, rituals, and spells — people often view these practices as something to be feared and avoided. But we will learn that there is untapped power within each of us that we can use to create connections and guide us to answers.

With Alex Naranjo and Marlene Vargas, we look into the world of intuition. As founders of the House of Intuition, they share how their intuition led them to the lives they enjoy today. Amidst stereotypes and negative experiences, they use their voice to show the side of magic often ignored.

Are you interested in unlocking your psychic ability, magic, and intuition? Listen in to Rosie, Alex, and Marlene as they share their fresh perspective on the world of magic.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Explore your psychic ability, and be confident in your power!
  1. Discover what’s beyond the box with magic. Don’t let yourself be constrained.
  1. Find out how intuition can lead you to answers and give you a deeper connection.

Resources

Episode Highlights

About the House of Intuition

  • The House of Intuition (HOI) came from Alex and Marlene's experimentation and their journeys alone and together.
  • The book is an attempt to change people’s negative perceptions of spirituality and psychics.
  • Despite being seen as taboo, Alex and Marlene want to show that this is not the case.
  • The two met in 2007 during the start of the Great Recession. It was a time when people lost their businesses and much of their property.
  • With their material world shaken, they wanted to look beyond religion for answers.

A Different Perspective on Magic

  • Through an enlightening experience with tarot readings, Marlene realized the power of intuition. Tune in to the full episode to hear how Marlene found hope!
  • Alex grew up in a religious household but felt constrained by religion. She reached beyond the limits to find what felt right for her.
  • Writing the book was important to them because it gave them a voice to share people can do magic beyond the box society placed it in.
  • Everything about HOI’s design and how it’s run has an intention.
  • HOI wants people to learn that you don’t have to believe what everyone tells you to. Marlene shares her father’s experience with limpia (traditional Latino cleansing) and how it ended up not helping him in the full episode.

Being in a Vulnerable State

  • Looking for guidance when in a bad situation can leave you vulnerable and open.
  • Some readers will only tell you what you want to hear and not what you truly need to hear.
  • Being vulnerable allows you to fall into a trap that often costs much but helps very little.
  • Though most readers often start with good intentions, humans can fall to the temptation of taking advantage of their popularity.
  • Readers should be a medium of communication, not the ones giving the message to the people.

The House of Intuition’s Purpose

  • HOI wants to encourage people to be confident in their power to determine truth from lies.
  • The shop is a place for authentic readers and teaching others how to tap into their power and control, especially during a reading.
  • A reader wants to connect you to what you truly need. If a reading isn't resonating with you, it's better to stop and perhaps find someone else who can better connect you.
  • But also consider that a message that isn't true may yet come true in the future. Marlene and Rosie share their experiences with readings that came true in the full episode.

Practicing Your Psychic Ability

  • Everyone has a psychic ability that they can strengthen through use and practice.
  • Alex and Marlene’s psychic nights include practicing the ability by trying to connect with your partner’s thoughts.
  • One of their practices is the little psychic circle. This practice involves sitting in a circle and using breathing techniques and meditation to practice the psychic ability.
  • The psychic ability is also built on confidence and knowing that you have a connection.

Exploring Your Intuition

  • Manifesting your intentions into the material world can happen with asking and focusing.
  • Thoughts are powerful. When you spend time cultivating what you want in your mind, you can manifest it into reality.
  • You can develop your intuition to understand if something you want will serve your highest good.
  • Practicing your ability helps you understand the communication spirit has with you.
  • Marlene and Alex give more examples of practices to build your strength in your intuition in the full episode.

On Writing Their Book

  • Society often viewed magical concepts with fear and avoidance.
  • They wanted to write in a way that encourages readers to explore and strengthen their psychic ability.
  • We all can use magic as a tool to use as we want to. Don't be afraid of it and what you can do with it.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[11:13] “Magic shouldn't be put in a box either. Just like religion, you shouldn't have to follow a recipe that's 300 years old when we're in modern times.”

[14:00] “You don't have to believe what everybody tells you. You have to empower yourself enough to know whether what somebody is telling you is true or not. If it resonates, great. If it doesn't, then it doesn't.”

[14:49] "Most of the time, when you go seeking for answers, you are already in a vulnerable place. Not only are you in a vulnerable place, if you're going to get guidance. . . you're not only vulnerable, you're open."

[18:35] “If the message isn't true, just put it in your back pocket. Don't chuck it yet, because it might come true in three months.”

[21:41] “Remember, your psychic ability is just a muscle that needs to be strengthened. We all have it, and it's like going to the psychic gym.”

#WisdomWednesdays: Letting Go Of Relationships When Love Is No Longer Served

We value our relationships, romantic, platonic, or otherwise. So we find ways to make them work no matter the differences we have with the other person. But sometimes, some relationships are just not worth fighting for anymore. Letting go of relationships  is difficult, but it may be the right thing to do. You have to know when enough is enough. You have to find the courage to leave when love and happiness are no longer served on the table.

In this episode, Rosie and Tessa talk about leaving and letting go of relationships when there's no longer love in them. Part of feeling radically loved is loving yourself enough to know when it's time to move on. They discuss the importance of gaining awareness about the situation and your emotions. They also speak about the nuances of leaving a relationship and facing the discomfort in making that conversation.

Tune in to discover the proper actions in letting go of relationships that are no longer serving you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn how to recognize when love is no longer in a relationship.
  2. Understand the dynamics of a relationship as a two-way street.
  3. Find out how to manage your emotions and control your reaction in confrontational conversations.

Episode Highlights

When Life Throws a Curveball

  • Nature is the world’s best teacher. A bird flew into Rosie’s slider door when she was about to start a breathing practice while recording.
  • Luckily, the bird is safe for now.
  • The metaphor here is, sometimes, life throws us a curveball when we want to gather ourselves.

The Anxiety of Failure

  • Tessa has been busy the whole week. But taking a break makes her feel anxious and fearful of failure.
  • The anxiety of failure has been disrupting her sleep.
  • Tessa is learning about the idea of “less is more.”
  • The big lesson for her is learning to say “no” and trusting her intuition.

Tracking Your Sleep

  • Rosie owns an Ōura Ring. It’s an accurate sleep readiness and activity monitor.
  • How well the Ōura Ring aids you with getting quality sleep will depend on the type of person you are.
  • Rosie hoped to get one for her partner Tory but seeing the data stresses him out. If acquiring the data about your sleep distresses you, it may be better not to get one.
  • Contracting COVID-19 messed up Rosie’s sleep. Not getting a good night's sleep impacts her focus and overall function.
  • For the past year, Rosie has been working hard to restore herself and balance her hormones. The Ōura Ring has helped Rosie be militant about her sleep.

A Placebo Effect

  • Tessa wonders about the margin of error in technologies like sleep trackers. But she says that what matters is it’s working for Rosie.
  • A placebo effect doesn't challenge the efficacy of something working or not working.
  • Meditation can also count as an ancient technology for decreasing anxiety.

When Love is No Longer Served in a Relationship

  • Rosie is reading the book Feeding the Soul by Tabitha Brown.
  • The book includes a Nina Simone quote: “You’ve got to learn to leave the table when love’s no longer being served.”
  • The quote is an ethos for Radically Loved.
  • Part of being radically loved is loving yourself enough to know when love is no longer there.

Loving Yourself

  • We’re quick to blame ourselves for things that might or do go wrong.
  • Learning when to leave the table when there’s no longer any love comes back to our relationship with ourselves.
  • Sheri Salata’s book The Beautiful No speaks about dealing with the narrator in your brain.
  • Tell the narrator in your brain, "No, thank you—not helpful," instead of indulging a negative thought pattern.

A Relationship is a Two-Way Street

  • It’s hard to discern when love is no longer present in a relationship that’s going well. It becomes a “you” problem when nothing changes with how you feel after years.
  • Have a conversation with the other person and figure out why you feel love is no longer present.
  • A relationship is a two-way street; if you’re not contributing to it, you’re contaminating it.
  • Being in a relationship is a practice. It’s a matter of recognition and what you do with that awareness.

On Codependency

  • Tessa's first long-term monogamous relationship was codependent. She felt there was potential if only the other person would do X, Y, and Z.
  • It took Tessa six years to learn the lesson in that relationship.
  • A lesson gets repeated until you learn it. At times, she still feels parts of that way of thinking.

Letting Go of Relationships That No Longer Serve You

  • Leaving a relationship that’s not serving you anymore also applies to friendships, work, and family.
  • There are nuances in letting go of relationships. Sometimes, it's necessary to leave the person; sometimes, you only need to set boundaries.
  • It's a matter of mutual respect, acknowledgment, and expression of feelings.
  • There's no one answer. But you'll need to know your values and what you need to do, and remain open-minded to understanding yourself and the other person.

Feeling Discomfort in Confrontations

  • You don’t have to lack compassion or empathy; you only need to pay attention mindfully.
  • Most of us want to hit the fast-forward button any time we feel discomfort. But sitting through the feeling becomes easier if you do it over time.
  • It takes a lot of courage for people to speak their truth.
  • Another nuance that comes into play in the discomfort of having the conversation is powerful emotions.
  • Not everyone has strong role models in showing up with their emotions healthily when faced with this conversation.

Controlling Your Reaction

  • You can’t control the other party’s reaction; what you can control is your own.
  • Rosie recommends going straight to the source when you can’t control your reactivity. You have to look at how you’re living your life as a whole.
  • Practice, sleep, stress, women’s hormones, and other things can compound into reactivity.
  • How you express yourself would also depend on the type of dynamic you have with the other person.
  • You don’t necessarily have to let out negative feelings directly to another person. You can direct it to the air, on paper, a voice note, etc.

Allowing the Cycle of Emotion to Move Through

  • Allow the cycle of emotion to have its full revolution.
  • Pause before you let a negative part of yourself take over.
  • Still, your reaction would depend on where you’re at as a whole in your life. It’s all valid and part of the human experience.
  • An emotional explosion is a build. Your mind will corroborate what the body feels.
  • Rosie's bio-hack for emotional explosions: relax your shoulders and take big deep breaths. It will dissipate your emotional charge by at least 30%.

Ways To Manage Emotions on Your Own

  • Write a letter, and let the rage out on paper.
  • Go on a drive, and scream at the top of your lungs
  • Toss an old chair or a journal in a backyard bonfire.
  • The liver is associated with the emotion of anger. What you eat or drink can also affect how you’re feeling as well.
  • You can also do Yoga Nidra, listen to binaural beats, or do rapid eye therapy. These practices balance the brain and bring you into the present moment.

The Body as a Miracle Conduit

  • The body is a miracle conduit for moving forward.
  • Reverse engineering is critical in achieving the results you want during teacher training.
  • We will continue to repeat the same cycles unless we find what works for us.
  • Therefore, we practice building a reservoir of awareness, wisdom, and knowledge.
  • Coming from a place of acknowledgment and awareness will allow us to hold each other up as equals.

5 Powerful Quotes

[07:14] “The metaphor is that just when we want to gather ourselves, sometimes, life just throws a curveball or sometimes a bird… We can learn so much from nature.”

[19:04] “Part of being radically loved is loving yourself enough to know when love is no longer being served and having the courage or the empowerment to get up from that table and move on.”

[26:50] “We don’t just throw people away. I think that’s where the nuance comes in. Just because I’m leaving the table, doesn’t mean I’m leaving the room.”

[33:27] "Sometimes those feelings need to come out. You need to be able to be angry."

[42:02] “We’re in the school of being a human. Unless we can find what works for us and different ways to establish new neurological pathways, new patterns, new habits, we’re going to continue to repeat the same cycles over and over.”

Episode Highlights

Cassandra’s Book-Writing Process

  • The whole writing process was fast for her, as she felt that it channeled through her. She started writing in March of 2021.
  • She is an embodiment of the results of manifestation, as she manifested the book on her birthday this year.

Manifesting Her Grandmother’s Gift

  • Cassandra’s grandmother, who she considers her best friend and go-to person, passed away recently.
  • On her first birthday without her grandmother, Cassandra expressed that she expected a gift undeniably from her.
  • She joined a meditation retreat wherein she was able to plug into source and divine energy. She took it as a gift from her grandmother.
  • On that same day, she got an email from a publisher. She has been trying to pitch the book in different ways, but it just wasn’t ever right.
  • Cassandra believes that her grandmother pulled some strings for her to make that happen. Because of that, she was able to finish the book in a week and a half.

Manifesting through Meditation

  • From working with clients, Cassandra noticed how most people are skipping meditation when attempting manifestation methods.
  • Due to the manifestation catchphrase culture, many believe that manifestation methods without spiritual work are enough.
  • In her book, she provided a four-step process to guide readers to grow in meditation when manifesting.
  • She details 100 different meditations to guide you in this process. Listen to the full episode to hear more!

The First Step: Remembering Yourself

  • People tend to skip this step, not realizing that without it, the process won’t work.
  • The primary purpose of meditation is for you to remember who you are.
  • When you do, you remember that you are a divine creator, have infinite potential, and limitless possibilities for your life.
  • This step is crucial because we manifest from the infinite within us, not from our human personality.
  • Tune in to the full episode to hear how Cassandra practices this step!

The Second Step: Connecting to Your Soul

  • Once you remember who you are, you connect to your soul’s desires.
  • These are different from your human desires, which are usually swayed by peer pressure.
  • Our desires are like divine seeds planted in our souls that we are meant to grow.
  • You can find your soul’s desires through meditation, where you bare yourself of external pressures and go into your heart and essence.
  • We also have to be careful of getting attached to how we want a desire to happen.

The Third Step: Reflection

  • This step involves looking at your wounds and limiting beliefs. You have to sit down with yourself and why you have yet to have what you manifest.
  • A lot of people hate this step because it makes them evaluate and reassess their life and decisions.
  • Cassandra's book has a whole process on how to help you do fear inventory, work through them, and heal.
  • When you start shifting your mindset, you get to see the other side of everything, where more things are available to you.
  • The limiting beliefs we put on ourselves keep us from manifesting more abundance.

The Last Step: Quantum Embodiment

  • Quantum embodiment is the step wherein you believe that the thing you’re manifesting has already happened.
  • To get to this level, you should not be restrained by your own beliefs.
  • You don't have to wait for it to happen. Act like you already got it, and you will attract it even faster.
  • In this step, you have to ask yourself: How would the next-level version of me do life?

Cassandra’s Personal Experience of Quantum Embodiment

  • One of the biggest things that Cassandra manifested was being in a cooking show on ABC.
  • She used to post amateur videos of herself cooking on YouTube because she enjoyed it. That is how a producer of the show found her.
  • She also manifested her books. She was already talking about it to her friends even if the writing had not started yet.
  • Cassandra only started writing the book when she got the deal. But, it didn’t matter because she was energetically sending the message that she was willing to show up.
  • Whenever she wants something to happen, she acts as if it happened already. That’s what she did when she set up a home studio, which paved the way for her acting career.

Rosie’s Manifestation

  • Before, Rosie wanted to do public speaking. However, she didn’t really enjoy being on camera.
  • She enrolled herself in a monologue acting class where she read a poetry book in front of everyone.
  • She was terrified, which speaks to how manifesting takes hard work and not just feeling your fantasy.
  • The class helped her feel more confident and empowered in all areas of her personal and professional life.
  • Looking back, Rosie thinks that class was what she needed to create the podcast.

Everything Happens for a Reason

  • Cassandra suggests that we should be open and intuitive about other people’s suggestions.
  • We think that our journey to our desire is linear. Sometimes we have to trust that the dots are going to connect.
  • Our desires may be guiding us to another thing which we have yet to conceive.

How Cassandra Feels Radically Loved

  • She feels radically loved through meditation, which allows her to have a dialogue with her ‘divine support squad’.
  • She ends up seeing and feeling their support as she moves through every day.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[07:29] “I believe that manifestation is something that you have to not only cultivate in a spiritual sense, but also, it's something that you think. It's something that you say. It's something that you do.”

[08:55] “There's this illusion that you can snap your fingers, manifest stuff without actually doing the spiritual work that requires.”

[11:56] “When you remember who we are, then we remember that we're divine creators; we remember that we have infinite potential, that we have limitless possibilities for our life.”

[12:18] “We don’t manifest from our human personality, right? We manifest from the infinite within us.”

[32:15] “It could be the journey that having that desire brings us on actually leads us to something that we couldn't even conceive at that moment because it wasn't even available in our consciousness yet.”

Episode Highlights

How to Define Luck

  • Luck can be seen as a way for people to cope with events beyond their control. It helps people stay optimistic.
  • However, there may be times when there is a synchronicity of events happening in perfect unison with outcomes that can only be possible through divine intervention.
  • In the full episode, Rosie and Tessa share stories where luck saved them from traumatic events.

Luck and How It Directs People

  • People can view luck negatively. For example, some would say how it’s lucky for others to have certain things.
  • Remember that achieving certain goals also involves hard work and commitment.
  • Thus, we should view luck with more nuance.
  • Rosie believes in an unseen force, a divine intervention, guiding us to make the right decisions.

Manifesting and Acting Towards a Successful Life

  • Manifestation is all about action that follows thought. Nothing happens when you don’t act on it.
  • In the same way, you can foster more luck in your life by working for it.
  • There will be times, however, when you won’t see results.
  • This lack of success could be because it’s not yet time or perhaps the thing you’re trying to do is not serving your highest good.

Knowing Your Inner Compass

  • Whenever you find yourself stuck, ask yourself these two questions: Who are you doing this for? Why are you doing what you’re doing?
  • Beyond this, you need to ask yourself: Can you afford the career you want? That is, are you putting in the effort and investment necessary to actively live your career path?
  • A successful life doesn't happen overnight. You need to keep generating luck and optimizing your opportunities.

Moving Forward from Loss and Challenges

  • You may face challenges along the way, but you need to keep moving forward and stay motivated.
  • A successful life takes time and effort to achieve. Rosie shares that her status in life took around 15 years to build.
  • If you know what you want and you’re committed to putting in the work to achieve it, you can build a successful life.

Finding Your Happiness

  • Rosie and Tessa share in the full episode how their entrepreneurial journey was full of challenges, but they knew they were in the right place.
  • Not everyone is suited for entrepreneurship. What’s important is that you’re happy and content where you are.
  • Remember to keep yourself open to possibilities and opportunities so luck can come into your life.

5 Powerful Quotes

[07:55] “There's so much synchronicity in certain things that happen that it's hard to believe that a whole slew of events happens so perfectly in perfect unison that create an outcome that couldn't have happened for any other reason than a divine intervention.”

[28:44] “Energy follows thought. Whatever it is you're thinking and whatever it is you're working towards, it's not just magically manifested out of thin air; there's action behind it.”

[36:14] “[Sucess] does not happen overnight. You need to be able to put yourself in a pathway where you are generating luck, but you're also maximizing your opportunities when you do get that luck.”

[40:54] “If you are committed and you know in your heart that this is what you want to do, it works 100% of the time.”

[48:07] “When you open yourself up to [luck] and proactively begin the movements and strategies and dreaming towards it, I believe that that's when things come into sync, and your life begins to unravel in a way that maybe it’s meant to.”

How to Find Life’s Purpose and Keep Your Spark Alive During the Pandemic with Jonathan Fields

How has the pandemic changed you? Being thrust into a situation where everything is uncertain would make anyone feel frustrated, stressed, and uneasy. Some may have overcome the challenges and begun thriving despite — or because of — the new normal we live in. But it’s not everyone. Some people have lost their jobs or loved ones. Still, the world continues to turn; there’s nowhere for us to go but forward.

So how can you figure out how to find life’s purpose  amid this global crisis? Jonathan Fields has one answer to doing exactly that. In today's episode, he describes one method for coping with the ongoing pandemic. He'll also discuss and share insights from his latest book, Sparked.

If you want to know how to find life’s purpose and keep your spark alive, then this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Get insights on how to find life’s purpose and reignite your passion for your work even during the pandemic.
  2. Understand why it’s crucial to allow yourself to be vulnerable and let others into your experience.
  3. Discover how to expand your potential, both in work and life, even with the current situation.

Episode Highlights

Jonathan the Good Life Guy

  • Jonathan also hosts The Good Life Podcast, which inspired Rosie to start Radically Loved.
  • You can always learn something – whether big or small – from the people that you meet.

Jonathan’s Yoga History

  • Before venturing into writing and podcasts, Jonathan wanted to open a yoga center in New York.
  • Then, the 9/11 incident occurred, spurring him on to continue the center. Jonathan believed people needed a place for healing and community.
  • Jonathan taught yoga for seven years before moving into his current work.

Human Relationships and Going Analog

  • The pandemic pushed most of our social interactions into the digital space.
  • Jonathan recently prefers going analog when it comes to relationships since we have lost that physical aspect of socializing.
  • Physical objects, like letters, transmit a level of intentionality and love that can emotionally connect us.

Writing “Sparked” During the Pandemic

  • Jonathan already had the idea of the book in his head even before the pandemic started.
  • The book is about seeing and understanding yourself clearly, as well as having hope and possibility.
  • As the pandemic progressed, the intention of the book began to change.
  • Jonathan wishes that his book helps other people meaningfully reflect on themselves during this pandemic.

The Writing Process

  • The core of the book is about "sparketypes" — a tool for you to understand what work makes you feel excited and alive.
  • Jonathan identifies himself as a “maker” — a person that focuses on manifesting ideas.
  • During the pandemic, he had the chance to delve deep into this “creation mode” and just do his own thing.
  • Doing things that satisfy your innate impulses can help you feel more grounded despite the anxiety and unease this global crisis brings.
  • Jonathan hopes to delve deeper into how to access this feeling of equanimity.

How to Find Life’s Purpose with the Sparketypes?

  • As a maker, Jonathan wanted to do more than just replicate other bodies of work. He would not have continued working on the sparketypes if this were the case.
  • This project started with many people asking him how to find life’s purpose and feel more alive.
  • Jonathan posits that there are a set of mappable impulses for work. These impulses have a set of common tendencies or archetypes, which he calls sparketypes.
  • He wanted to validate this idea, so he built an assessment tool that over half a million people have completed.
  • Many individuals have found this tool valuable in answering how to find life’s purpose.

How Jonathan Continues to Practice Yoga

  • Even if he is no longer teaching yoga per se, he still considers his work on exploring the human condition and finding ways to reduce suffering as a part of his practice.

To All Who Have Lost Their Light

  • An experience like the pandemic can change you forever, and there is no going back to the person you were before.
  • Allow yourself to feel a painful moment thoroughly rather than forcing yourself to get out of this space. It’s okay to be sad.
  • Many people have felt a sense of isolation; know that you are not alone.
  • Give yourself permission to feel vulnerable and allow others to share the experience with you.
  • Your feelings and experiences are valid. Acknowledge the truth in them and how they have affected you.

How to Find Life’s Purpose in the Pandemic

  • Inequity is more palpable now than ever since plenty of people have lost their jobs because of COVID-19.
  • Not everyone is adequately equipped with resources to live a comfortable life in this pandemic.
  • Look into what is accessible and available to you and find ways to work with it.
  • Reflect on what you truly value and think of how you can achieve it.
  • Life is fleeting, so do things not only for security but also for their meaning.

Keeping the Spark Burning

  • Search for activities, tools, and processes that you regularly use, then investigate how they can make your work more meaningful.
  • There will always be ways that enable you to express your sparketype in the work you do. Once you do, you will feel much more fulfilled.
  • We can’t ignore and address hard truths. However, we need to create a healthy boundary in what we let in.

How Jonathan Feels Radically Loved

The Power of Interacting and Connecting with People with Joe Keohane

From a young age, our elders teach us to distrust people we don't know. One of the most popular children's stories revolves around this idea. Little Red Riding Hood goes out to her grandma. She talks to a stranger in the form of a sly fox. She arrives at her grandma's house only to find out she's been tricked. The moral of the story is singular—strangers have wicked intentions, so you have to be wary of them. But is there credence to this?

In today's episode, we're joined by Joe Keohane, a journalist, parallel parker, and a firm believer of the goodness in humanity and strangers. He debunks the stranger danger propaganda and explains the benefits of connecting with people . Cooperation and connection are part of our nature, and also our secret to success. Joe teaches us to overcome our fear of talking to strangers and how to have more meaningful interactions with them.

Tune in to the full episode to tap into the power of connecting with strangers for self-expansion!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover the benefits of engaging and connecting with people.
  2. Understand, on a deeper level, your fear of talking to others.
  3. Gain some inspiration and insights into how you can connect with strangers comfortably.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Behind Joe’s Book and the Current Social Climate

  • Joe's parents like talking to strangers. Now, even in their 70s, they still make new friends.
  • He found this trait interesting. Although he is not as confident as his parents, he went into journalism, which involves a lot of talking to strangers as well.
  • After having a moving conversation with a cab driver, Joe realized he hasn't been connecting with people as much as he did.
  • Joe thinks two factors contribute to this decrease in engagement with others: stress from work and the advent of smartphones.
  • Wanting to know more, Joe spent a few years researching how we connect with people. This was the genesis of his book.

The Effects of Connecting with People

  • Connecting with people is akin to self-expansion.
  • When you talk to someone and have a profound connection with them, you can gain new perspectives on the world.
  • Talking to someone different from you can also help you expand your viewpoints and reconsider your opinions about their race or country.
  • These connections challenge preconceived ideas of the world and the people in it, which in turn alleviates prejudice and political polarization.

The Fear of Talking to Strangers

  • As a child, Joe was bombarded with stranger danger propaganda. Research shows that this belief eroded an entire generation’s trust in other people.
  • However, the claim that strangers pose a mortal threat is statistically baseless. In reality, more crimes are committed by people already close to the victim.
  • Things like inequality, gender, race, and political orientation can make it harder to initiate connecting with people.
  • People fear interacting with strangers because they don't know how to do it. Listen to the full episode to hear more about the research behind this anxiety!
  • But once you begin conversing with others, it tends to go much better than you expect.

Flipping the Scripts

  • When asked how we’re doing, we usually respond to others’ questions by rote. These answers are called scripts.
  • Joe challenged himself to break these scripts when he interacts with others.
  • To his surprise, this led to more meaningful interactions, however short. Connecting with people this way can make us feel more optimistic and trusting.
  • We tend to overestimate the rejection we will experience when starting conversations with strangers. Tune in to the episode to find out about the research on the topic!

Interactions In-Person vs. On Social Media

  • Social media allows you to be anonymous. You can also plan what you'll say ahead of replying.
  • Meanwhile, talking to people in person is more cognitively challenging.
  • However, you get mentally stronger as you start connecting with people more.
  • In addition, it is our nature to communicate and collaborate with others. It is a trait that set us apart from other mammals and allowed us to form civilizations.

Dangers of Disconnecting from People

  • Lack of interaction and connection is poison to society.
  • The polarization that it causes further leads to entrenchment and dehumanization of other people and groups.
  • Online, it's much easier to dismiss people based on their opinions. Whereas in person, we are driven to seek commonality with others.
  • You can have a conversation with people with opposing views. You just have to go out there seeking to understand.
  • Media platforms give us a negative perception of other people. By going out into the world and connecting with others, you can correct this pessimism.

Connecting with People in the Current Political Climate

  • Joe recently spent time with an organization that helps Democrats and Republicans connect with each other.
  • Being from Boston and living in New York, Joe identifies as a moderate liberal.
  • His research and experiences made him less dismissive of people from the other side.
  • He’s hopeful that while it will take time, we can achieve political rebuilding.
  • If you hear something you don’t like, don’t be quick to dismiss or respond contemptuously. Instead, pause for a second and try to understand the other view.

The Problem with Today’s Society

  • Humans are hypersocial creatures. Cooperation is in our basic human nature and the secret to success.
  • But due to various factors, we have become smaller and angrier beings.
  • Now that we're not fulfilling our social needs, rates of depression and loneliness are skyrocketing.
  • To combat this, we need to try interacting and connecting with people.

How Joe Feels Radically Loved

  • Joe’s 5-year old recently described her love for him as something that makes her heart explode.
  • That’s what makes Joe radically loved.

5 Powerful Quotes

[12:28] “The main fear that people had was just a fear that they didn't know how to [interact with others].”

[16:31] “There's a raft of benefits to even having like kind of high-quality small talk with somebody. You just have to actually do it.”

[21:07] “It comes pretty natural to people once they do it. Once they get past the anxiety and once they work those muscles a little bit, it becomes second nature.

[31:01] “Instead of being reactive, act more wisely.”

[33:38] “We're wired for connection. That's the secret to the success of the species.”

About Joe

Joe Keohane is a veteran journalist who’s held high-level positions in publications like Esquire, The New Yorker, Wired, and Boston Magazine. He has also contributed to writing several textbooks and a screenplay.

His life revolves around talking to people he barely knows and reporting facts and data. Fueled by curiosity, he decided to intensively research connecting with people and their value for self-expansion. This work resulted in his book, The Power of Strangers.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusiveness in the Wellness Space with Maygen Nicholson

Yoga and meditation are crucial tools we use in an increasingly busy and stressful world. But, did you know some people are being excluded in these spaces? The 2SLGBTQIA+ community has long withstood discrimination in society, and the wellness space is no exemption. It’s already difficult to manage stress, what more for those who are marginalized.

In today's episode, Maygen Nicholson breaks down how we can promote diversity and inclusiveness  in the wellness spaces and everywhere you go. The first step is understanding. Furthermore, it is a lifelong process that involves continuously educating ourselves and learning from others. The journey will be uncomfortable, but that is part of the work that we need to do.

If you want to learn how to create safe spaces for the non-gender-conforming people in your community, this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Understand why it’s crucial to honor people’s identities.
  2. Learn how you can embrace diversity and inclusiveness.
  3. Know how to educate yourself and others on the topic.

Episode Highlights

Honoring Pronouns and Names

  • Affirming someone in their identity drastically decreases mental health risks.
  • Misgendering others can cause them to have gender dysphoria, a state of psychological distress.
  • Doing this also equates to gaslighting the person you are misgendering.
  • Practice asking how people want to be called.

The Need for Diversity and Inclusiveness in Healing Spaces

  • Maygen used to hold queer and trans-only yoga classes. Most of their attendees only felt comfortable practicing yoga with them.
  • Yoga and meditation are important tools for the marginalized.
  • Yet, many queer and trans people experience harm and discrimination in these wellness spaces.
  • The main issue is a lack of understanding. So, it’s everybody’s responsibility to learn and do better.
  • Even the origin of yoga accepts and honors gender-nonconforming people, so why isn’t our modern practice able to do the same?

Educating Ourselves

  • We all need to educate ourselves on the matter. It is not a gender non-conforming person’s job to teach you.
  • You will always have a blind spot, so it’s crucial to keep learning from others and your mistakes.
  • The first step is dismantling your biases around gender, and then learning about what you don’t know.
  • Promoting diversity and inclusivity is less about knowing the right language and more about making other people feel seen and heard.

Divestment and Support

  • There are still a lot of important conversations to have.
  • For instance, the number of black trans people being murdered is increasing every year.
  • It’s not possible to cancel people with immense privilege. What you can do instead is to divest or pull away from them.
  • It’s exhausting for people in the community to constantly speak about their marginalization.
  • As an ally, you can show your support for diversity and inclusiveness by talking to the people in your life.

Embracing Diversity and Inclusiveness

  • We have to graduate from tokenism and confront our biases within ourselves.
  • Even if you come from a place of privilege, there are still ways the dominant culture inhibits you from being who you truly are.
  • It’s going to take a while before spaces created by cis white people become safe for everyone. In the meantime, you can create these spaces yourself.
  • Hire people from the community to create a more diverse workspace.
  • Advocating for diversity and inclusiveness will benefit you too, as it will make your space richer.

Taking Action

  • Ideas are not helpful if they only live in your head. You need to put your knowledge into action.
  • Different identities have long existed before colonization.
  • As such, promoting diversity and inclusiveness is also a process of reclamation.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[09:53] “I think that that's the biggest problem. It's like so because you don't want to offend, you just don't say anything. That's not the point either.”

[17:41] “It's every person's responsibility to do the work, whether or not you have somebody in your life. It's also really important to know that it is not a trans or non-binary or gender nonconforming person's job to educate you.”

[19:17] “The first step is dismantling all your biases around gender or learning what you don't know about it.”

[20:24] ”Let go of any need to assume in the first place, that we look at somebody and we just know who they are.”

[36:44] “Since the beginning of time, these identities have existed and a multitude of cultures all over the world. So this is a reclamation process.”

Building Resilience To Find Peace From Anxiety With Hala Khouri

We live in a time when our lives can be overwhelmed by stress and anxiety. Being in this constant state can perpetuate a feeling of helplessness. But at one point, we have to face all these negative feelings inside us to free ourselves from them by building resilience . Acknowledging that both positive and negative things can co-exist is the only way we can feel more at peace.

In this episode, Hala Khouri joins us to share the essential tools in her book, Peace from Anxiety. She talks about developing the concept of “tend and befriend” as a stress response and interoception as a self-regulation technique. Hala also discusses why she chose the theme of building resilience.

Tune in to the episode to learn how you can find peace from anxiety and transform your life.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn about the three different aspects that might be keeping you from finding peace.
  2. Find out helpful tips on what to do when you’re unable to regulate your nervous system during high-stress states.
  3. Discover the concepts of self-regulation, interoception, and building resilience in transforming yourself.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Writing Peace from Anxiety

  • Hala always knew the book was inside her. Many of her students and clients were requesting for the information to be more widely available.
  • The book-writing process was a seamless experience for Hala. She was ready and merely wrote every smart thing she has said.
  • The book is divided into three different parts. What will impact readers most depends on what’s missing in their lives.

The First Part: Physiological Aspects

  • This part is about grounding techniques, self-regulation, and understanding our nervous system.
  • It’s often the easiest for people to grasp and has the most immediate impact.
  • These tools are the things people remember, implement, and do all the time.

The Second Part: Relationships

  • We can’t be well alone.
  • While we can have all the tools for our bodies to run smoothly, we still need to build relationships.
  • This part is not something you can do right away. It involves working on prioritizing relationships, asking for help, and letting yourself need other people.

The Third Part: The Global Heart

  • It’s about feeling like we’re contributing towards a better world.
  • For some people, the missing piece is the sense of making meaning and taking accountability.
  • We all need to have a larger feeling of purpose and meaning.

Relationship Divisions on Social Media

  • Our thinking is very binary when we’re in a high-stress state.
  • Separation can be a stress reaction. The disembodied relationships and biased algorithms of social media make it worse.
  • Social media is the perfect storm to our massive division and intolerance for difference.
  • Before judging other people in a black-and-white manner, remember that we all have different levels of access to information and education.

On Unhappiness, Forgiveness, and Giving Care

  • Unhappy people tend to focus on their unhappiness because of the hypervigilance of figuring out how to be happy.
  • Hala has worked with people with anxiety and depression. The “cure” they found was extending their care beyond themselves.
  • We need to transform our stress response from “fight or flight” to “tend and befriend.”
  • Tend and befriend is about seeing that our well-being is bound and extending ourselves to care for others when we’re stressed.
  • With the coronavirus, nobody can be well until everybody is well. Getting vaccinated is more of thinking about the sake of other people than yourself.

What to Do When You’re Unable to Regulate Your Nervous System

  • Sometimes, we need somebody or something else to hold us. It can be another person or a spiritual belief that is bigger than us.
  • Connecting to the suffering of others intentionally makes us feel less alone in our suffering.
  • If you have COVID-19, think about all the other millions of people who also have COVID-19 at the exact moment.
  • Allow your heart to open and feel that you’re not alone in your suffering.
  • Tune in to the full episode to hear about Rosie’s experience on contracting COVID-19!

Launching a Book

  • Hala still feels surreal that her book is out.
  • She hopes the book becomes a tool to support and impact people, especially at this high-anxiety time.
  • One of her critiques about self-help books is their overly individualistic paradigm.
  • Her book encourages people to need each other and allows them not to do everything right by themselves.

Parenting at the Time of COVID-19

  • Her children understand how lucky they are to not be affected as badly as others.
  • The issues her children experience are around missing milestones that allow them to feel themselves growing.
  • Sometimes parents want to make their children’s bad feelings go away. Doing that is a disservice to your child.
  • Instead, Hala teaches her children how to face difficult feelings while also acknowledging what is positive.

Self-Regulating When You’re Hyperfocused on Negative Feelings

  • We tend to hyperfocus on negative feelings when we’re anxious, depressed, or scared.
  • Numbing or denying the negative feelings don’t work. Allow yourself to notice what else is in your body that feels good.
  • Build the capacity in your brain to hold something that feels pleasant along with what’s uncomfortable.
  • The goal is not to get overwhelmed by anxiety or depression. Then, they can become just a part of who we are while we’re still able to focus on the good.

Interoception and Trauma

  • Interoception is our capacity to sense what’s happening inside us.
  • Since we live in a disembodied culture, most of us have to learn it. This process is even harder for people who have had a lot of trauma in their formative years.
  • You have to understand that you can’t just stop being anxious instantly. But you can work on being more grounded.
  • It would be helpful to have support, such as being in a yoga class or working with a therapist.
  • You have to go slow. Otherwise, you will keep yourself in a high anxiety cycle.

Slowing Down

  • We get used to moving at a particular pace that’s comfortably uncomfortable. Slowing down is scary, but it is okay.
  • Hala decided not to go for her doctorate. It was a tough decision, but she realized she doesn’t have to do that right now.
  • We don’t always have to strive to be amazing; mediocrity can be satisfying as well.

Building Resilience in the Book

  • Hala focused on building resilience because it doesn’t pathologize.
  • Her favorite definition of resilience is allowing difficulties to transform us. It’s having this feeling that we can handle life.
  • Resilience is a word that is more nuanced than some other positive words. It’s about our capacity to imagine things being better than they were.
  • We’re all living in an imagined future. Trauma is a loss of imagination; reclaiming that capacity gives us hope.

How Hala Feels Radically Loved

  • Hala feels radically loved in every moment by being surrounded by blessings, opportunities, and supportive relationships.

5 Powerful Quotes

[11:11] “The thing that ‘cured’ [people with anxiety and depression] was actually extending their care beyond themselves, making it about something bigger than themselves.”

[11:23] “I think what our planet needs is for us to transform our stress response from a fight or flight to a tend and befriend.”

[11:51] “Until everybody is well, nobody can be well.”

[23:33] “Maybe the goal is to not be overwhelmed by our anxiety or to feel like we’re bigger than our depression so that those things become just a part of who we are.”

[33:31] “Trauma is a loss of imagination. And when we reclaim our capacity to imagine, then that gives us hope.”

#WisdomWednesdays: How to Stop Putting People on a Pedestal and Comparing Yourself to Others

If you’re like most people, you probably begin comparing yourself with others  at the sight of greener pastures. However, what others choose to show us often does not include their struggles and flaws. In addition, everyone has a unique life path. Thus, it's best to refrain from putting others on pedestals. Instead, look inwards. Ask yourself — how can you bring joy into your life? Can you be the sun in someone else's?

In this episode, Rosie and Tessa discuss the pitfalls of putting others on a pedestal and comparing yourself with others. They also touch on our humanness, making mistakes, and how everyone can change if we allow them to do so. Rosie also talks about choosing value-adding friendships and shares a personal experience about setting boundaries.

Tune in to discover simple ways to be more in tune with yourself and combat the lack mentality!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Understand why you shouldn’t put people on a pedestal and stop comparing yourself with others.
  2. Discover the need to look beyond people’s mistakes and allow them to change.
  3. Know the importance of choosing what kind of friendships to keep in your life.

Episode Highlights

Why We Shouldn’t Put Other People on a Pedestal

  • We’re all humans who make mistakes. So, putting others on a pedestal only sets you up for disappointment.
  • We’re all flawed, but we tend to hide those parts of ourselves from the world. Instead, we only show our highlight reels.
  • Instead of comparing yourself with others, you can direct your energy and attention inward, toward things that bring you joy.
  • More often than not, we admire people not because they have something that we don’t, but because they live more freely than us.
  • Looking at someone carrying out their purpose can either spur us into action or make us feel defeated.

How to Stop Comparing Yourself with Others

  • We need to pause and consider that other people’s lives are their own.
  • We never know what someone else is going through. So, the best we can do is wish them well on their journey.
  • Also, recognize that you have a lot to be grateful for in your life. Doing so can help distance yourself from a ‘lack’ mentality.
  • Ask yourself, what are the things you've done that make you feel proud?

Acting on Inspiration

  • It’s not entirely wrong to put others on a pedestal because these people can inspire us to excel.
  • The issue comes with being addicted to the inspiration and not doing anything in return.
  • We have to create an outlet for this inspiration, or it becomes corrosive.

Looking Beyond Mistakes

  • People make mistakes. What’s important is how we process and learn from them.
  • Sometimes, it’s difficult to own up to our own mistakes due to fear of rejection.
  • We must give ourselves and others room to make mistakes and learn from them.
  • People can change, and we should give them that space to grow.
  • If people are acting out, it’s often because they come from a place of pain.

On Friendships

  • There are three types of friends—high maintenance, low maintenance, and no maintenance.
  • There is a correct balance of friends for you. You can only give and take so much.
  • Keep friendships that are value-adding to your life. It's okay to let go of friends. Asymmetrical relationships can be harmful to both of you.
  • The key to navigating friendships is clear boundaries.
  • Listen to the full episode to hear Rosie’s story about a person who wanted to be friends with her.

Final Thoughts

  • To become better friends, we can reflect on this question: How do we show up as the sun in other people’s lives?
  • It is essential to cultivate your sense of self through meditation or alone time.
  • Through mindfulness, you can know yourself instead of focusing your attention on how people perceive you.
  • Knowing who you truly are can help you navigate life without being clouded by others' judgments.

5 Powerful Quotes

[04:36] Instead of comparing somebody else’s outsides to our insides, we can reflect and put our attention and energy into the things that make us happy and bring us joy.”

[11:33] “If we are just beings that want to consume inspiration and never do something in return, it's going to eventually create a void.”

[22:18] “Somebody that maybe you admire or that you see that might have this outwardly wonderful-looking life could be going through a lot. So I always say, don’t put people on pedestals.”

[37:01] “It’s time to release that relationship out into the world because it’s not serving you. And I do believe that you outgrow people.”

[41:52] “Without mindfulness, you will always be constructing your sense of self based on others’ perceptions.”

Achieving Enlightenment through Self-Acceptance with Wade Lightheart

Do you have to be completely calm and serene to achieve enlightenment? The answer is, in a nutshell: no. You don't have to box in the different traits of yourself. Enlightenment is a journey by which you learn to accept yourself and your experiences. By continuously practicing yoga, you realize that the negative aspects go away by themselves.

In today's episode, Wade Lightheart shares how we can embrace the transcendent experience to enlightenment. Here, he talks about his personal journey in his spiritual practice. We also glean some wisdom from his stories of near death experiences. Wade further enlightens us on how we can immerse yoga with the human experience. His story reminds us that we can always go through all aspects of human emotions and experiences and still thrive and live.

If you want to find inspiration in your spiritual journey, then this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover how you can cultivate your practice towards enlightenment.
  1. Learn how Wade accepted and managed the nefarious characters within himself.
  1. Get insights from Wade’s stories of near death experiences.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Events that Led to Wade’s Spiritual Practice

  • Wade shares that his journey to spiritual practices has been through a series of miracles.
  • He had a near death experience when he was 22. This event gave him clarity about faith, divinity, and a deeper exploration of the self.
  • Wade also shares how he went through a series of past lives.
  • He was given the book by a former workmate, Autobiography of a Yogi, which resolved his issues with organized religion.

The Turning Point

  • Life had a different turn of events for Wade. He had several experiences in the underground scene, some of which he shares in the episode.
  • He soon came across a brother and sister who gave him three books on yoga. It was from one of these books that he realized he needed a mentor in his practice.
  • Yogananda appeared in his room, and through silent transmission, advised him to do Kriya Yoga.

Managing the Nefarious Character

  • Wade shares that although he cultivated his meditation and spiritual practice, he didn’t fully extricate himself from the party lifestyle.
  • With self-realization, he recognized the nefarious parts of him. He learned that acceptance was the answer and not resolution.
  • If you go deeper into your spiritual, internal realm, the less frequent the nefarious characters emerge. If they do, they come out in a more wholesome way.

Accepting versus Resolving

  • In meditation and yoga practice, there's often the notion that you have to tone down your "wild side," or that you have to look or behave a certain way.
  • But Wade clarifies that yoga is not a way of restriction; yoga is all-encompassing and accepting.
  • By practicing yoga and being inspired by divinity, the negative aspects of oneself go away on their own.

Enlightenment versus Sainthood

  • Sainthood is glorified in the West, while the East aims for Buddhahood or enlightenment.
  • The former is the perfection of the personality, while the latter is the transcendence of it.

Stories of Near Death Experiences

  • Wade shares that he had two more near death experiences, one of which was the ultimate death experience.
  • Listen to the full episode to hear more about these near death experiences!
  • This death is not only of the physical body but of the ego itself. David Hawkins refers to this as the "final door."
  • Death is an opening up to something far more than our lives and experiences.
  • A lot of Eastern practices are preparations for death, which is something that we have to transcend.

Navigating Daily Life

  • For Wade, not relying on faith puts things in perspective for him.
  • When you feel like you lack something, it's easy to get ensnared by sensory experiences instead of enjoying them.
  • Something that can help you avoid ensnarement is yoga, a practice you have to remember to do.

Recognizing Ensnarements

  • It could take years to escape sensory ensnarements.
  • Samsara is the karmic seeds that lie in one's consciousness.
  • Karmic seeds need to be undone, realized, or unrealized as your level of awareness moves up.
  • You need to harness spiritual company—people you can give honest feedback and with whom you can be transparent.
  • You may experience separation from divinity after your practice and still choose to continue without looking for an outcome.

Dark Nights of the Soul

  • After Wade’s experience of the dissolution of the ego, it was hard for him to come to terms with the feeling that his body would leave at any second.
  • To deal with this, Wade focuses on love. Through this, he can pursue his mission to end physical suffering and biologically optimize health.
  • To stabilize energies and stay on this planet, Wade holds on to the idea of his future children.
  • When he becomes a parent, he wants to cultivate a life of engaged non-attachment.

How Wade Feels Radically Loved

  • For Wade, existence is proof that we’re radically loved.
  • Only love could create something magnificent, unusual, and unique.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[11:23] “I don't think the nefarious characters ever dropped away. I'm not so sure that you actually resolve those things; I think you learn how to manage those things.”

[13:15] “There’s a nefarious character within all of us. [There needs] to be an acceptance and recognition of that, and recognize that that’s innately part of me and will never drop away.”

[21:22] “Maybe I can just bypass sainthood and become enlightened and just let the body and my personality and my ego do whatever it is because I’m in charge of those anyway.”

[24:54] “Every time you go further into the truth, there’s a part of you that has to die.”

[26:09] “Death is what enlightenment is. Death of what you think you are into that which has always been.”

#WisdomWednesdays: The Power Of Actively Listening And Connecting With Others

We are constantly creating connections in everything we do. And the relationship we have with ourselves and other people—family, friends, and strangers alike—hone us in many ways. That’s why fostering deep interpersonal and intrapersonal connections is a life-long pursuit for many of us. It allows us to be at our highest selves and always come from a place of compassion and kindness. At the universal level, it creates a chain of positive reciprocity.

In this episode, Rosie and Tessa talk about three topics that would allow us to nurture our relationships with ourselves and others. First, they discuss what it means to be a mother and the concept of mothering yourself. Then, they delve into the practice of actively listening  to others and how it helps foster trust and genuine connection. Finally, they share personal stranger encounters that show how powerful and life-changing interactions with strangers could be.

Tune in and be inspired to start connecting deeply with yourself and other people!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover how Rosie and Tessa view being a mother and what self-mothering is.
  2. Learn the essence of actively listening and how to become an active listener.
  3. Understand the power of strangers.

Resources

Episode Highlights

On Aging and the Decision to Have or Not Have Children

  • Tessa feels a little nervous about aging sometimes because she has chosen not to have children.
  • One of the reasons why Rosie wanted to have kids is she wanted somebody to take care of her. It’s what has happened historically and culturally.
  • But there’s no guarantee your children will take care of you and not put you in a home when you age.
  • Tessa’s parents decided to put her grandmother in a home. Meanwhile, Rosie's grandmother is living with her aunt and has always been living with family.

Becoming a Parent

  • Rosie’s path has not been linear. She still desires a family, but it’s decreasing as she gets older.
  • She believes that it will happen if it’s designed for her life. If it doesn’t, the desire will diminish and go away.
  • People without children cannot imagine what it’s like to have kids. Meanwhile, people with children cannot imagine life without their children.

Tessa’s Relationship with Her Grandmother

  • A grandparent’s love is different from that of a parent. Tessa’s parents' decision to put her grandmother in a home shocked her.
  • There was a chasm that grew between her and her mother that took some time to heal.
  • It was tough because Tessa wants to protect and make her grandmother feel loved.
  • She understands that there are many reasons why a home for her grandma was the better choice. It’s a full-time job to take care of aging parents.

Rosie’s Relationships with Her Grandmother

  • Rosie's grandmother raised her and her sister. Both of her parents worked full-time.
  • She yearns for her grandmother whenever she doesn’t feel well.
  • She was yearning for her mom when she had COVID. But she also wanted her grandmother to take care of her.

What Being a Mother Means

  • Self-mothering is a self-care process for Tessa; it’s unconditional love.
  • Rosie's idea of mothering means being aggressively protective yet all-encompassing in the most loving way.
  • Rosie pondered some questions in her journey of becoming a parent: What is the definition of a mother? What does mothering mean to you? How do you mother yourself?
  • The process of re-parenting and learning to mother yourself is a crucial part of adulthood.
  • Tessa's mother now wants a friendship with Tessa because she feels like she did her job as a mother.

The Job of a Mother

  • We constantly need to revisit our job of ensuring we feel loved and cared for as mothers to ourselves.
  • The more we tune into mothering ourselves, the more we can feel safe in navigating our lives.
  • Sometimes, we need to feel mothering from other people. You can utilize communities if you don't have a mother or lack a good relationship with yours.
  • There are many “mothers” in tribal communities waiting to fill chasms with love.
  • The world needs more of this feminine energy that comes from a place of compassion and kindness.

Active Listening

  • We garner more connection if we start actively listening to each other. Active listening is a practice.
  • Having a dialogue in your head while someone else is talking is not active listening.
  • Active listening is witnessing someone telling a story without judgment.
  • The whole concept behind actively listening is to establish not only a connection but also rapport and trust.
  • Tune in to the full episode to learn the seven ways to becoming an active listener!

Practicing Active Listening in Teacher Training

  • Rosie asks people to face each other, with one person speaking and another listening without interruption.
  • Sometimes, we’re quick to reply to someone because we want to validate and reassure them. But it can stop the flow of emotion of the person speaking.
  • After the person speaking stops sharing, the other person would paraphrase for them. Then, they switch positions.
  • This practice builds a sense of trust that is important in building a community.
  • Teacher training is a great way to create a safe space for yourself and build life-long relationships.

Listening vs. Hearing

  • Hearing is different from listening. Listening requires you to go beneath the words, observe on an intuitive level, and connect from that place.
  • If you pay attention, sometimes, nobody’s actually having a conversation in a room full of people.
  • Tessa never practiced actively listening as a child because there was no model for it.
  • 80% of the time in couples coaching, both parties want the same result. Often, the reason for the problem is they don't feel seen.
  • All it takes to connect with someone profoundly is to step back and listen.

The Importance of Eye Contact

  • Practicing eye contact is valuable.
  • An exercise Rosie learned in training is to make eye contact without saying anything.
  • Being in the presence of another actively while eye gazing is hard, even for a short time.
  • The exercise involved the following: eye gaze, maintaining eye contact for 30 seconds, and complimenting the other person after the time's up.
  • It was uncomfortable for Tessa and Christopher on the first two tries. On the third try, they transcended the silliness and started to see a deeper level of emotion.

Connecting with Strangers

  • Next week’s guest is the author of the book The Power of Strangers. He says that constant distraction from our phones hinders us from making conversations.
  • Rosie’s rule when traveling is she cannot be on her phone. She has to engage with the Uber and Lyft drivers she books.
  • Tune in to the full episode to hear about Rosie’s most memorable travel conversation with a driver and how he is alive now because of the power of strangers!
  • We have the power as people to change somebody else’s day.

The Power of Strangers

  • The power of strangers shows up in Tessa’s life in the form of angels. She had a serendipitous experience with a stranger.
  • At the line for her favorite coffee shop, she started to get impatient because the man before her was taking forever. It turned out that he wanted to pay for her coffee.
  • Tessa paid it forward to the person behind her. It became a chain of reciprocity of generosity with the people in line.
  • On another note, the new artwork in one of Tessa's favorite parks says, "Smile at five strangers today." But once you smile at one person, you won't stop at five.
  • Tessa hopes to spread more positivity by smiling more at others and making smiles contagious.

5 Powerful Quotes

[12:01] “[Self-mothering] is very much a self-care process. It’s very much a way that I speak to myself. It’s very much a way that I say, ‘I love you unconditionally’.”

[17:31] “If we listened to each other, we would garner more connection, we would be more inclined to engage with other people, we would feel more confident, more grounded, more able to express ourselves fully.”

[19:50] “[Active listening] is really an act of witnessing and letting someone else do the speaking and holding space for them while they’re speaking.”

[26:59] “Listening requires you to go beneath the words and to observe on a heart level, on an intuitive level to try and see what’s underneath the words… Then, try to connect with them from that place.”

[43:22] “Let’s make smiles contagious. Let’s have a smile pandemic.”

Episode Highlights

How Bricia Handled the Pandemic

  • She was 20 weeks pregnant in March last year and gave birth in July.
  • The experience of carrying her baby through the pandemic was grounding for Bricia.
  • The pandemic put things into perspective. At the end of the day, it’s all about taking care of her children.
  • Because she was high-risk, she had to stay home and let her team manage her restaurant.

Becoming Better for Her Children

  • For Bricia, giving birth to a girl was a completely different experience from giving birth to a boy.
  • After she gave birth to her baby girl, felt the urge of becoming better.
  • She took care of her body during the first few weeks after her pregnancy and dropped her bad habits.
  • Bricia admits that she did not take care of her body after giving birth to her firstborn. This time around, becoming better at this aspect of motherhood was her priority.
  • Being pregnant during the pandemic made it easier for Bricia to slow down.

Navigating the New Normal

  • Bricia is now back to the grind 100%. She has someone who helps take care of her daughter.
  • Despite being busy again, she feels at peace because she loves what she does.
  • She doesn’t feel guilty leaving her daughter behind because she got to spend so much time with her one-on-one.
  • With the economy opening up, it feels like the roaring 20s again for businesses.

Guelaguetza Restaurant

  • Their website is now called ilovemole.com. It’s easier to remember than the previous guelaguetza.com.
  • The restaurant is in Koreatown in Los Angeles.
  • They specialize in Oaxacan cooking.

Building Generational Wealth

  • Bricia loves working with her family. She runs the family business with her brother and sister.

  • As a result, you can be more creative. You are also more at peace and present.
  • By building generational wealth, she is allowing her children to explore what they want without having to worry about money.

Mental Graduation

  • We are continuously graduate mentally to another state of mind.
  • We go through mental high school and mental college. Then, we get to the place where we open doors to new dimensions of financial knowledge.
  • Becoming better means you have to keep learning.
  • It’s important to remember that age doesn't define your capacity to learn new things.

Taking Chances

  • Bricia didn’t realize how big of a hold her parents had on her life until they retired.
  • She always wanted to be a graphic designer, but her father was against it. Bricia wished she didn’t listen and just went for it.
  • She realized she could do anything when her parents retired and moved away. She and her siblings bought the restaurant from their parents and took over.
  • Making a decision and following through it is the hardest skill to learn and lean on.
  • No one has control of your life but you. Understanding this will make you realize that you can do anything you want.

How Resilience Impacted Bricia’s Decision-Making

  • Adversities will always happen in life and business; it’s the way the world works.
  • You can decide to stop and backtrack, or you can stop, learn, and move forward.
  • Once you understand why something happened, you’ll realize it’s not that big of a deal and develop a new perspective.
  • Opportunities come when you’re not scared. You keep becoming better as you face and deal with issues and adversities.
  • Becoming better at self-compassion is one of the hardest things to learn in life. Yet, it’s one of the most useful tools you can have.

The Most Important Value Bricia Wants Her Children to Have

  • For Bricia, it’s confidence. If you’re innately confident, you can make anything happen no matter what the world tells you.
  • Innate confidence is different from given confidence or fake confidence that makes a person delusional.
  • Instead of giving her son fake confidence, she builds his self-esteem by letting him fail, explore, and do things for himself.

How Bricia Feels Radically Love

  • Working in the hospitality industry, her life revolves around serving people.
  • And so, Bricia feels radically loved when people listen to her and give their time, compassion, and energy without taking.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[06:14] “I just need to become a better woman. I need to become even a better version of me for [my daughter].”

[15:16] “Generational wealth means having more control of your time, without the stress of other things.”

[18:51] “No one's too old to learn anything.”

[22:37] “Getting used to the fact that making a decision and following through that decision is probably the hardest skill to learn and lean on.”
