Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hi I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

Marco Borges is a renowned Exercise Physiologist and New York Times Bestseller teaching individuals to transform their lives and bodies through his innovative exercise and nutrition programs. With his latest cookbook, The 22-Day Revolution, you’ll easily understand clear Marco became the man responsible for converting Jay-Z and Beyonce to veganism.

This interview is one of my absolute favorites. Marco is one of the most inspiring people in my life. I am so eternally grateful for his work and how it’s helped people (including me) create a happier, more sustainable life.

In this conversation, Marco gets into what’s really behind the problems we have with our bodies, how habits make up our lives and what we can do to change them, why a plant-based diet doesn’t have to be so difficult, and more.

Radically Innovative Marco

Uncovering the truths of what’s hurting our bodies and sharing that with the world
Recognizing we are the sum of our habits and how they determine well-being
Living by the Japanese practice of continuous self-improvement in every way

Radically Inspired Clarity

One good action begets another good action. To start a new habit, take it one good action at a time.
It’s more important to understand what you’re doing to be healthy than figure out what to do when you’re sick.

Marco Borges Answers…

What’s the driving force behind your career in health?
How do we change our non-constructive habits at home?
What would you say to people who feel stuck?

Do you feel like you're just following other people's plans for you? Do you want to be able to tune into your intuition and empower yourself to make good choices?

People tell us countless times how our instincts, gut feelings, or hunches aren't that reliable. The fact that we experience them, however, means they are essential. Our very own intuition is logical, and listening to it can mean our success. Whether in professional or personal life choices, it pays to unlock your mind and tune into your intuition.

In this episode, Laura Day joins us to share the wonders of engaging intuition in informing your life choices. Laura is a bestselling author who has helped people create profound changes using their innate intuitive capabilities. She talks about the critical role of intuition in regaining control over your future. As an intuitionist, she also shares her top tips to tune into your intuition to achieve your goals.

Episode Highlights

Uncertainty in the Pandemic

  • Dwelling on the past or an "old normal" will put you off balance. Laura advises focusing on what you can do right now.
  • Crisis takes everything away, but that could be the most creative time in your life.
  • Laura believes that the pandemic has allowed people to hear each other's voices.
  • Because of the problems we face now, we tend to forget our resilience to challenges.
  • One of the opportunities that came out of the pandemic was communication over a distance. It allowed people to tap into vast sources of information and perspectives.

All About Intuition

  • Normal human brains have a sense of the future and the people around them. This sense is intuition.
  • Laura trains you to read yourself and others using evidence-based practice.
  • In childhood, you form an ego because of your repressed intuition.
  • Intuition is a matter of knowing what your goals are and realizing that everything is interconnected.
  • It's hard to read yourself because you usually don't learn how to tune into your intuition.

Regaining Control over Our Future

  • If you know that something terrible is going to happen, you can still create change.
  • The most impoverished areas of our lives have the most pent-up energy.
  • We are so good at kicking ourselves down. But, some people can help you shatter that pattern.
  • We become disempowered by the idea that we need to adopt someone else's narrative.
  • Listen to the full episode to know more about how Laura empowered herself by following her narrative.

How to Tune into Your Intuition

  • Successful people get up in an uncertain world, confront their demons, and still get what they want. They create a better place for everybody.
  • Set a single, flexible goal. When situations come up, remember your goal. This goal becomes a magnet for intuition.
  • Laura also likes to practice blind reading with other people.
  • Use your sleep to connect with your plan. Before going to sleep, take a moment to suspend the illusion of separateness.
  • Have high expectations and applaud the effort when you don't hit the mark.

Choosing Your First Goal

  • The downside of intuition is that it makes you vulnerable to what other people are feeling and judging.
  • Your first goal must be the thing that worries you at the start of the day.
  • Your goal is also the thing that you currently want more than anything else.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[03:07] “If you're always looking back on an old normal, whether it's in a pandemic, or in life, you're always going to be off-balanced. Right now is your normal.”

[16:05] “Everything is a result of something, and there are no signs. Your entire life is a sign.”

[21:25] “We are more trustworthy with ourselves than we realize.”

[30:44] “Don't externalize power. You are the universe. You are your spirit guide—you are everything doing the very hard job of being a unique human being.”

[35:22] “Intuition is our ability to know information about people in life, but it's also our ability to set a target and use that information in a way that creates for us.”

Emotions in the Body  with Dr. Joey Mattina

When we feel pain, the first thing we think of is the possibility of a physical health condition. It may be an injury, muscle or tissue damage, soreness from lousy posture, and so much more. However, we don't think about how these pains may be emotions in the body—emotions that manifest physically. When you truly tune into your mind and body, you'll understand that your pain is so much more than what's on the surface.

In today's episode, chiropractor and healer Dr. Joey Mattina joins us to shed light on the deeper mind and body connection. He explains how stress and trauma manifest as physical ailments in our bodies and how we can access them. Joey also emphasizes the importance of proper breathing in modulating our body's nervous system.

Tune in to this episode to know how you can take the first steps in understanding and dealing with emotions in the body!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn the top-down and bottom-up approach in accessing our body and brain.
  2. Discover how trauma is tied to pains in different areas of the body.
  3. Find out what the pain-body is and some ways of dealing with it.

Resources

Episode Highlights

The Body Keeps Score

  • There are two ways of accessing our body and brain. The top-down approach is talk therapy, while the bottom-up approach is bodywork and getting into our bodies.
  • As a chiropractor, Joey uses a combination of the two.
  • One of the chiropractic field's major arts is getting the best treatment for something, not merely a physical ailment.
  • A lot of times, nervous system issues tie down to past trauma and stresses in life.
  • Tune in to the full episode to hear Joey's experience uncovering emotions in the body during a myofascial seminar!

When the Person is Not Ready

  • Everybody's different. Joey tries to tune into people and their emotions in the body based on his experiences and personal healing journey.
  • He's the most present in life when he puts his hands on somebody.
  • He suffered from abuse when he was a child. He had issues talking about it and having people touch him.
  • When people aren't ready, let them walk through the door, either verbally or nonverbally.
  • People don't respond well when forced.

Processing Emotions in the Body

  • It's a lifelong journey. It takes the right time and life experience to be ready to access it.
  • Research has shown that ailments in different areas of the body correspond to different traumatic life experiences.
  • As a practitioner, it's all about matching the patient's vibration to invite a healing environment.

How Not to Take in the Subtle Energy of Accessing Trauma

  • As long as he can continue doing the things he enjoys, he stays grounded.
  • With his turbulent childhood, he had always been learning how to process and modulate stress.
  • His practice requires him to change energy every half hour interacting with different people. He knows it will get to him if he doesn't take the time to be with himself.
  • Joey continues to work on setting boundaries.

The Importance of Feeling Empowered to Care for Our Health

  • More than cracking, he's more in the realm of helping patients not see him.
  • He views himself as someone who can bring out the best in people, get in their bodies, and heal their wounds.
  • Touching people in the right way and making them realize they can change their life is the power of chiropractic care.

Dealing with the Pain-Body

  • The pain-body can be multiple things. It can be a specific traumatic event, a negative pattern you're in, and something that happened before you.
  • The biggest thing is trying to understand where your pain originates.
  • There are many different therapeutic ways to understand your pain. It's about experimenting and finding what works best for you.
  • Acknowledgment is the first step towards healing.

The General Theme in Chiropractic Care

  • His objective in his practice is to get patients out of the physical pain they're experiencing.
  • A lot of the general aches and pains are biochemical. Regular bodywork and adjustment are suitable for the actual physical nature of the body.
  • Working with athletes is different from working with the general population because they're dealing with specific torn muscles.
  • When he starts to see people more often than he would like to, that's when it essentially becomes a therapy session.
  • Many aches and pains in the body can also root from not breathing enough and having a tight diaphragm.

Stuck Breath

  • Breathing is an automatic function of the body that we don't have to do consciously. It is affected by the nervous system, including the sympathetic fight or flight.
  • When there is constant stress, we get chronic shallow breathing, and the stress hormones stay high.
  • Taking ten deep breaths can help lower your blood pressure and reduce cortisol.
  • A lot of what shows up as physical ailments in the body comes from the nervous system. Taking deep breaths is a way to teach the nervous system how to modulate.

What Is Box Breathing?

  • It's a four-second deep breath-in, four-second hold, four-second breath-out, and another four-second hold.
  • Wim Hof has done a lot of this breathing exercise.
  • Box breathing tells the body that things are okay and lowers the nervous system response.
  • The pain you experience under incredibly stressful things may occur because of so much tension in the body.

Voicing Out Trauma

  • It's something that lives with you for the rest of your life. So, it's about how comfortable you can get with it.
  • Everybody's going to process it differently. There's no shame in feeling nervous when you start talking about and processing trauma.
  • We all live with different pains; we have unique journeys. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Feeling Radically Loved

  • Joey feels radically loved when he's giving his best self to everybody else in his life.
  • While he can't control who loves him, he can control what he's putting into the universe.
  • Being radically loved means fulfilling his purpose.

5 Powerful Quotes

[07:26] “What's super interesting about it is everybody's different. And, you know, I'm always learning every single day. I can only--I just do the best I can based on my experiences and things that I've been through in my own healing journey.”

[09:39] “I'm still processing but but you know, it's a lifelong journey. But yeah, I you know, I think a lot of people when something like that happens, we tucked it away, we compartmentalize and it's something that's you know, we just try to not think about it and it lives in there.”

[11:35] “If someone comes in and they're cheerful and joyful, I try to match that. Because when you match somebody else's vibration, you get in sync, and you can then sort of you invite this healing environment.”

[12:35] “I find that as long as I can continue to do the things that I know, bring me joy, or my meditation, I stay very grounded.”

[17:07] “I just think that touching people in the right way physically, but also just sort of, you know, leaving them with something that says, “Oh, shit, I can change my life.” And, and that's very powerful to me.”

Understanding Your Relationships Through Family Constellations  with Marine Selenee

Do you struggle with relationships? Do you feel like something is holding you back from staying true to yourself and living your best life? Maybe it’s time for you to try family constellations.

Whether we’re aware of it or not, our past profoundly influences our present choices. Our family story, in particular, is something we carry for the rest of our lives. However, the narrative we learned as kids may stop us from being authentic and reaching our full potential. By acknowledging our past through family constellations, we can finally heal and let go of our stories.

Marine Selenee joins us in this episode to discuss how family constellations can help you move forward in life. Marine talks about what happens in family constellations therapy and how you can start with it. She also shares her journey to starting the profession and how she deals with work exhaustion.

If you want to learn more about the wonders of family constellations, then tune in to this episode!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover how acknowledging your past can positively impact your life and relationships.
  2. Learn how family constellations therapy works and how to start with it.
  3. Find out how Marine feels radically loved.

Resources

Episode Highlights

What is Family Constellations Therapy?

  • Family constellations therapy involves discovering your family story and understanding how it subconsciously impacts your life.
  • If you don’t acknowledge your family story, it might affect your adult life.
  • A part of this process is uncovering the things you’re holding on to, which keep you from moving forward.
  • Rosie had more revelations in a session of family constellations than she has ever had in therapy.

Marine’s Journey to Family Constellations

  • At first, Marine just wanted to understand why her father abandoned them.
  • She was introduced to family constellations when she hit rock bottom at 25 years old.
  • The simple idea of family constellations is that you’re responsible for holding onto your past or moving on from it.

The Impact of Acknowledging Your Past

  • The real burden is not the past itself but how you hold onto it.
  • Your past is not going to change. You can only change your perception of it.
  • By acknowledging it, we stop waiting for the narrative to change.
  • Any issues you are dealing with right now stem from a lack of belonging.
  • It takes courage to change to another dynamic.

About Marine’s Book

  • Marine is finishing the last chapter for her book, Connected Fates, Separate Destinies.
  • This book will be released in September 2021.

Starting Family Constellations Therapy

  • As long as you’re open to experience a new type of healing, you can do family constellations therapy.
  • She recommends one-on-one sessions for first-timers instead of group sessions.
  • Marine wants to give her clients every tool that can help them do the work on their own.

Unraveling the Subconscious

  • Our subconscious minds already give answers through our everyday language.
  • Understanding our subconscious is a true test in getting to know who we are.
  • You have the right to know your story and to heal from that.
  • A lot of things in Rosie’s subconscious were holding her back. Going through family constellations made her feel more at peace and empowered.

Is Family Constellation Exhausting?

  • Family constellation is Marine’s passion, so she doesn’t even feel like it’s work for her.
  • It feels like the sessions nourish her soul, that she feels energetic after each session.
  • Marine takes care of herself first to be able to take care of her clients.
  • She has a lot of people who help her take care of herself.

About Love and Relationships

  • Love and relationships are Marine’s favorite topics to write about in her book.
  • If you want to be in love with your partner, you need to heal your relationship with your parents.
  • Listen to the full episode to learn how to change your love life for the best drastically.

Family Constellations for People with No Parents

  • If your parents passed away, you could still find them, along with the answers, within yourself.
  • If you’re adopted, the answers are always within you, and family constellations can still work for you.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[06:24] “And that's what I like about family constellations like, yes, it is actually pretty much simple, you know, very simple. But in the end, you are in charge of what you want to do. Do you still want to hold on to it [your past story], or do you want to move on?”

[9:25] “You are the only one who can change your perception towards your past, towards your parents, and how at that moment, you want to live your life.”

[19:43] “It's your story and you have the right to know your story and you also have the right to heal from your story.”

[22:58] “I won't be able to function and be, I think, as good as I am with my clients if, at first, I wouldn't take care of me.”

[24:04] “If you want to be in love with your partner, in love with your relationship, this is what you have to do. You need to heal your relationship with your parents because whatever you did not understand with them, you are going to ask your partner to take care of it subconsciously speaking.”

  • One of the biggest lessons Aubrey learned was to have faith in the community.
  • Aubrey emphasizes how the pandemic opened a lot of moments for contemplating the divisions in our society.
  • Through acknowledging past transgressions and forgiveness, we can mend the divisions in our society.

Connecting with the Community Through Media Platforms

  • There’s a lot of personal and monetary interest involved in media content.
  • Aubrey observes that big media platforms have advertisers who influence them.
  • People often get lost in the conspiracies fed to them by the media.
  • Social media wants to keep people on the platforms for as long as possible by publishing outrageous and divisive content.
  • It’s important to recognize that they don’t always have our best interests at heart.

Speaking from a Place of Oneness

  • Aubrey shares that when you abide by your ego, there’s a strong urge to put people down.
  • You tend to compare yourself to other people to see who’s better.
  • Your ego does this with morality as well. The ego likes to isolate you in this citadel of righteousness.
  • Aubrey argues that all human life comes from the same source and intrinsic worth.
  • It’s important to push this message continually; otherwise, we fall into the trap of the ego.

On Spiritual Materialism

  • Aubrey had a vision quest when he was 18.
  • He went to the mountains, had psilocybin tea, and felt his soul.
  • Aubrey continued to go to spiritual places to recognize and feel the oneness.
  • Oneness is meaningless until you feel it yourself

Audrey’s New Book

Shifting to a New Perception on Relationships

  • He explains how a polyamorous relationship is a different spiritual practice.
  • He emphasizes the importance of making boundaries clear in a polyamorous relationship.
  • For Aubrey, the sacred union means putting the relationship above the individual.
  • He recognizes that his relationship with his wife now is a different lesson, a different practice.
  • He is very excited about exploring a different type of union between two people.

Roots of Dissatisfaction in Relationships

  • Aubrey discusses that physical attraction in relationships has an expiration date.
  • This is why romantic and passionate relationships wane over the years.
  • You need to build in other practices to grow and deepen the connection. These practices can be sexual, spiritual, or both.
  • If you’re content in your relationship, you’re at peace. But if you’re complacent, you feel a current of frustration.
  • Listen to the full episode to learn more about the difference between contentment and complacency in a relationship.

How Aubrey Deals with Depression

  • Your body influences the mind, so you first need to look at the state of your body. Next, examine if you have any stuck emotions.
  • Perhaps there’s some energy stored up that you need to release. And this may come in the form of grief.
  • Modifying the stories you tell yourself helps you control your narrative of yourself.
  • Being self-aware enables you to guide yourself to do the right thing.
  • To know more about the tools and practices that Audrey uses to move through a depressive state.

How Aubrey Feels Radically Loved

  • Being radically loved is true every single moment of every day.
  • Judge yourself less.
  • Forgive yourself completely.
  • Surrender to knowing that you are radically loved.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[8:17] “So, I think it's it's essential that we start to come back to some semblance of oneness. You know, with an acknowledgment but also a forgiveness of the past  and past transgressions, and an allowance for us to just come together in our humanness.”

[17:28] “There's no value proposition to say that this human is better than this human, all humans all life is intrinsically worth the same. And we're all part of the same source.”

[19: 58]  “You can find that we are all one somewhere. But until you feel it, it's meaningless. You have to know it... You could hear all the descriptions about an avocado, but until you have guacamole, you have no idea… And for me, that's been my path is to really feel it.”

[27:44] “It's not that you lose your independence or your identity, but you just know that when the relationship is strong, it will nourish both of you.”

[37:25] “If you're just complacent, there's going to be this kind of current of frustration, you're going to be like, I just kind of want to run somewhere, I just don't know where. And, that's the feeling that I think can be really hard.”

Manifestation Part 2 Following Your Joy ( Episode 127 Robert Sturman)

Just being yourself requires a certain level of vulnerability not all of us are willing to show. Vulnerability is often mistaken for weakness, and nobody wants to be perceived as weak. As a result, we hide our authentic selves. But no matter how we choose to express ourselves, we have to go back to the reasons behind what we do.

In today's episode, Tessa Tovar shares what it means to be authentic. We also talk about the importance of words and how we say them and the key ingredient to manifesting our wants and desires.

If you want to know more about the importance of just being yourself, then this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode

  1. Understand what being yourself means through authenticity.
  2. Discover the power of words and how they help us reach our highest vibration.
  3. Learn more about manifestation and the importance of taking action.

Episode Highlights

What Does It Mean to Be Authentic?

  • To be authentic means being honest and fully who you are. You're also unapologetic about it.
  • To be authentic is to be grounded and vulnerable.
  • Using filters in your photos does not mean you are not authentic. Using filters and dressing yourself up are ways of expressing yourself.
  • You may think twice about just being yourself and doing what you want because you may want others to view you as authentic.

How Important Is It to Be Viewed as Authentic versus Just Being Yourself?

  • It all comes down to how much you care about what other people think of you.
  • If you’re just being yourself, you won’t care if anybody else thinks you’re authentic.
  • Try understanding why you’re doing what you’re doing.
  • Use make-up and filters if they make you happy, or don’t if you feel like you are putting on a mask.
  • Explore both sides of the coin.

The Power of Words

  • It’s important to mind your words and how they can contribute to reaching your highest vibration.
  • It is important to state our intentions clearly so that you're affirmative and positive.
  • When expressing yourself, take a pause, breathe, and choose your words with intention and mindfulness.

Vibrating at Your Highest

  • There is also a semblance of vulnerability when vibrating at your highest.
  • We need to think about how we can utilize words that continually make us feel empowered.
  • In doing so, we can communicate more profoundly and build bridges rather than using words to argue.
  • How you’re saying something and responding to something also matters.

What Is Manifestation?

  • Manifestation is the idea that what we think, say, and do matter in creating the life that we want.
  • To manifest is to create and magnetize something towards us.
  • We can't determine everything that happens to us, but we do have the creative capacity to bring about change.
  • The main ingredient of manifestation is a commitment to action.

5 Powerful Quotes

[13:50] “If you are truly showing up and being true to yourself, you're not going to care if anybody else thinks you're authentic.”

[14:54] “Always bring it back to yourself and understand the ‘why’ of what you're doing and why you're doing it.”

[22:25] “Words don't have to come out so quickly and so rapidly. We can take a moment to think about what we want to say from a place of mindfulness.”

[26:49] “Vulnerability is coming just from a place of being completely honest.”

[33:15] “If we believe that we can bring something into our life, if we believe that there is a way out of a not-good situation, then there is a way to think, say, and do something about it.”

  • The pandemic brought stress and anxiety for everyone. It is important to learn how to healthily cope despite the uncertainties.
  • Lodro’s book, Take Back Your Mind, is a helpful book for today’s time. It provides support in facing anxiety.

Facing Anxiety and Dysfunction amid a Global Pandemic

  • Some of Lodro’s meditation students do not know how to navigate life without meditation practices.
  • Mindfulness can help you recognize anxiety triggers. It helps with stabilizing thoughts and emphasizes focus on proper breathing.
  • Take Back Your Mind offers other tips and techniques that are short and easy to do.
  • We waste our mental energy, which we could have used to connect with our loved ones or do other activities, when we entertain anxious thoughts.
  • With the ongoing pandemic, facing anxiety entails learning tools to unhook ourselves from the stories we welcome and enjoy life for what it is.

Recognizing Anxiety and Techniques On How to Disengage From It

  • News and social media can deplete our mental and emotional battery. Worse, this often goes unnoticed.
  • With depleted mental and emotional batteries, coping with the pandemic and facing anxiety become harder.
  • Whenever you’re doing something, ask yourself two questions: “Is this helpful?” and “Is this useful?”
  • Our minds have the capacity to unhook itself from stress-producing stories we create. Being gentle is the key.
  • Lodro uses the term “thought party” to describe how we try and create as many thoughts as possible about a situation. Constantly thinking of “what ifs” is not helpful. It removes us from the present.
  • We must not only step away from intrusive thoughts but also learn how to appreciate the present.

Accepting Ourselves hrough Meditation

  • Lodro also feels anxious about not being liked by the people he admires.
  • Often, we believe that we must find love from others.
  • In Tibetan, the word Gom can mean meditation or familiarization with oneself. Meditation enables you to know yourself better.
  • Meditation leads to satisfaction with the love we have for ourselves. We have enough love within, and it is the most important relationship to have.
  • Growing up in a Buddhist household taught Lodro that he wasn't born as a mess that needed fixing.

Mindful Use of Devices and Social Media

  • Social media bombards us with different sensory images.
  • Listen to the full episode to know in-depth Lodro's threefold logic in using gadgets and social media — the sense of intentionality, being present as much as possible, and the fruition of how we feel after.
  • Discernment is recognizing the things we want to cultivate or cut. Discipline is prioritizing our morals and doing the things that uplift us
  • Life is a learning process. As humans, we continue to change and create better habits as we go.

Growing Up in a Buddhist Household

  • Lodro talks about the generational anxiety and trauma he observed from inside and outside of his world in Buddhism.
  • He's becoming more aware of the world and societal issues outside of Buddhism, such as toxic masculinity, patriarchy, and more.
  • Lodro feels radically loved knowing that his book can help people and feel the love he infused into it.

5 Powerful Quotes

[1:54] “But for me, it's really been, what do I do when things fall apart? What do I do when it hits the fan, and there's a major stressor, there's a major move, or major financial thing and major... whatever it is for any of us.”

[14:25] “If you met a new friend, and you started hanging out regularly, and getting to know them, at some point you'd be like: I like this person, I like this one. And maybe months, years past, you look over your shoulder: I love this friend because we spend so much time getting to know them and embracing them for who they are. Meditation is us doing that with ourselves.”

[16:58] “And people asked like, Oh, was it like growing up in a Buddhist household?’ The key thing that really stood out to me is that I wasn't raised with the idea that I was originally messed up and I needed to fix it. I was raised with the idea that I'm basically a whole good as is.”

[23:06] “We make mistakes as human beings. And then we continue to refine and say, ‘Well, I don't want to do that mistake again, I want to be more intentional.’”

[26:08] “There's a learning process along the way; and that's sort of the beautiful thing. As humans, we can continue to evolve, we can continue to change from who we were, and force better habits than we have in the past.”

Episode Highlights

Lessons from 2020

  • Despite 2020 being chaotic, Terri remains optimistic that 2021 is a chance for rebirth.
  • 2020 may have been a cocoon, but 2021 can be a butterfly.
  • In the past year, Terri shed old layers, tapped into her creative spirit, and rediscovered her true self.

Go Back to What Brings You Joy

  • Being a media professional for live TV, Terri is used to that always-on lifestyle, so stepping out of that was a real challenge.
  • Terri grew up in a musical family; she learned how to play an instrument, sing, and play sports.
  • Today, Terri is rediscovering her forgotten talent for singing with the help of a voice coach. She also plans to take up piano lessons again.
  • Terri feels reborn as a new woman.

Catalyst for Change

  • During her birthday in August, Terri went on a trip to Cabo with friends.
  • The trip offered an opportunity for reflection. Terri started reassessing what she wanted to do and what she wanted her life to be.
  • Along the way, she met her current voice coach, who set her on the path to rediscovery.

On Stifling

  • Terri gave up on singing and playing the piano to focus on building her career.
  • Her dad encouraged her to attend a performing arts school, but she refused.
  • If she went to the school her father wanted, things might have been different, and she wouldn't have to stifle her passion.
  • When her communications career took off, Terri's passion went to sleep. She's waking up now.

Going Inside

  • Although some people find introspection scary, Terri didn't mind it at all.
  • The pandemic forced everyone to look at the mirror and recognize how life has turned out. What do you do well, and what should you eliminate? What layers should you shed to get in touch with your authentic self?
  • Meditation was a great way to go inward. She was initially skeptical, but Terri rediscovered the power of meditation through Insight Timer.
  • Guided meditation has been a life-changer for Terri.

Looking Within

  • In our fast-paced world, we tend to forget ourselves. We can easily ask others how they're feeling, but we fail to give ourselves that same courtesy.
  • If your heart, soul, and spirit are not healthy, how can you love other people?
  • There are more triggers and stressors than ever, which is why you have to find a way to stay grounded.
  • Whether it's exercise, yoga, or journaling, find something that helps you check in with yourself and look within.

Nourishing the Soul

  • Coming from a demanding corporate career, Terri found it challenging to stop self-judgment and criticism.
  • Terri's slowly learning to bring the walls of judgment down and embrace vulnerability.
  • When her voice coach asked Terri about her purpose, she responded that her calling is to give love.
  • Even though she felt like she didn't know what to do with her purpose, her niece echoed the sentiment. Terri is a natural motivator who gets people to listen.
  • Terri found that her purpose is to give love through motivation.

Radically Loved

  • Terri feels radically loved by showing up and greeting the day with a smile and an open heart.
  • As an optimist, she chooses to focus on the good.
  • She feels radically loved by her girlfriend circle and family, who support and challenge her to grow.

5 Powerful Quotes

[04:47] “You know that butterflies just resonate for me just generally speaking, because I feel like butterflies for me represent a rebirth.”

[07:51] “So I sang, I played the piano, and I ran track. So I never knew, I never knew there was an option not to do that.”

[09:57] “You know, listening to the rolls of the water and the ocean. Just to really think differently about what I want to do, and what I want my life to look like and what I want my niece and nieces to think about, thereon.

[14:50] “And so I always think back--even before the career, before college--like if I had, if I had I had chosen to go to school for performing arts, what would my life look like?”

[17:27] “But anyway, I, um, you know, it really forces you to look in the mirror, and really see what's in the heart and hat propels you? What wires you? What motivates you? What things you need to get rid of, right?”

[10:03] “Communication, as hard as it is, always feels better when you're done just saying how you feel and being truthful in the situation and getting it over with.”

[25:10] “And it’s really up to us to choose what we're going to do with our life no matter what our circumstances are. We don't have to walk with our head held down. We don't have to let that shame weigh us down.”

[26:04] “A lot of times you feel like you're the only one going through that horrible experience. But then you realize there are so many people who have been through something so similar, and you're not alone. And I think that helps too—knowing you’re not alone.”

[35:40] “So if somebody like me, who didn't even know how to attach a picture to an email like five years ago, can write and publish a book and get on The Today Show, I'm telling you—anything is possible. So write your book. Here’s your sign; do it.”

[40:53] “I feel like love is just the most powerful thing in the world. It really is the most powerful thing in the world, and it allows us to heal and grow and connect.”

[19:43] “The nature of truth and connecting to the truth within us. It speaks to us in whispers and our meditation practice. It speaks to us, but we don't tend to listen to it, so then it starts to knock, and it starts to lay into things in life.”

[27:54] “The bigger picture of this thing that I'm healing within myself is going to ripple not just into future generations and the people around me.”

[39:28] “What I learned was that part of my rage was that I was so jealous of how good I was taking care of her [Ginger, my dog]. And my inner child and my wounded self was longing for that level of care for myself, and I needed to learn how to take care of Shannon.”

[40:25] “How can I exhaust this intense emotion without harming myself or others? That's my practice now is like I that's what I love about what you said is you don't feel shame about your tantrums. Curiosity and the Miracle Mentality with Tim Storey

Pursuing a life you genuinely don't want dulls the light in your eyes. We often say, “Life happens,” and we move on, burying the dreams and ambitions we had as children. But if we learn how to tap into our younger versions' aspirations, we can get our life back. Is there a miracle mentality we can adopt to have the right mindset and get back on the yellow brick road of our lives?

In today's episode, the one and only Tim Storey joins us to speak about the miracle mentality. He shares profound knowledge on navigating life, setbacks, and success. Tim also sheds light on the importance of curiosity and consistency in cultivating our real desires.

If you want to get inspired to get back on the right path, this episode will spark something in you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn the principles and power of the miracle mentality.
  2. Discover the importance of cultivating your curiosity in staying on top of your game.
  1. Find out why you should build your spot in your work for six months before anything else.

Episode Highlights

It’s Just Around the Corner

  • We all have self-doubt.
  • We may question ourselves, but change can be just around the corner.

The Miracle Mentality

  • Tim has been studying the subject of miracles for over 20 years.
  • It is something extraordinary, uncommon, not regular, and not the status quo.
  • Kids dream big because of the miracle mentality. However, as they grow up, they move on with their lives and experience interruptions.
  • Tim teaches how to keep the miracle mentality and apply it to your daily life in the book.
  • The real "you" will make a demand on the "you" that you become. The miracle mentality is something innate.

How the Miracle Mentality Dims

  • Every chance they get, children will choose to play. According to Tim's studies, adults tend to lose that playful side of life.
  • At the age of 11 or 12, children start getting a lot of homework on top of other things. They become a human "doing" rather than a human "being."
  • Adults get so caught up in what they have to do in their lives and forget that they need playtimes too.
  • You can download new fantastic information when you're in the creativity of playtime.

The Importance of Staying Curious

  • One of the reasons for the lack of curiosity is the pressure that comes with being challenged.
  • You go singular when you're feeling pressured; you go plural when you're feeling great.
  • The curiosity is in the plural. It's in the expansion and discovery.
  • We all go through recovery and discovery at the same time. Our playtime has to be intentional.

How Tim Recharges

  • Tim also gives himself playtime.
  • Tim loves music. From being a Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson's fan, he's now friends with them and coaches them.
  • He gets triggered every day through music.
  • Listen to the full episode to know more about maintaining the magic in your life!

How Tim Cultivates Curiosity and Conversation

  • You have to gauge two things as a speaker: the climate and culture of the room.
  • Tim's talks are more like a conversation. He brings in humor because a lot of what he knows as a speaker is from comedians.
  • We learn primarily in three ways: education, conversation, and observation. Tune in to the full episode to learn how Tim executes these!

Why People are Afraid to be Themselves

  • Many times, it's not their fault. They learned in the wrong way and felt pressure to achieve something that's not for them.
  • You have to soar with your strengths.
  • Be yourself, and be okay with it. The best version of yourself is the biggest blessing.

Moving Forward with Life after a Setback

  • Look how far you've come along with the lessons you learned from these setbacks.
  • A comeback is not a place; it's getting back on the path.

The Biggest Lessons from Acquiring Success

  • You need to sit, learn, and get educated. And then, you got to stand in what you learned and walk out its principles every day.
  • Once you start walking it out, you start gaining confidence and start running.
  • Tim began running in his 30s, speaking to 30,000 to 40,000 people at conventions.
  • Walking it out has to be consistent.
  • Tim doesn't trip off all the power in his work because he's more into the moment.

When You Feel Like Giving Up

  • We need to quit instant gratification. It's our insecurity and ego speaking.

5 Powerful Quotes

[06:59] “I think that what happens to us, even around the age of around 11 or 12, we start getting a lot of homework. So all of a sudden, that homework begins to get in the middle of our playtime.”

[08:36] “I think a lot of people, that as adults, we get so caught up in ‘What am I going to be doing in life?’ And, ‘Do I like what I'm doing, and am I making enough money?’ that you forget that we need playtimes, too.”

[10:43] “The curiosity is not in the singular of all the negative things. It's in the plural. It's in the expansion. It's in the discovery.”

[15:41] “Yet, she likes to dance, be silly, have fun, tell jokes and that helps her be plural and stay in the creative, which is what my book is about.”

[18:35]  “I like to converse with people, because you never know what you're going to learn from them. So. So I want to be educated, I want the conversation, but I'm also into the observation.”

Do you feel out of energy after the dreadful and exhausting 2020? Or maybe you've recently just gone through trauma—your personal 2020—and have no idea how to regain balance? After a series of traumatic events, getting back on your feet can be a real challenge. However, intentional living, regaining balance, replenishing your energy, and restoring yourself are all possible.

In this episode, Lopa van der Mersch joins us to share her tips on regaining balance and energy after facing adversity. She talks about her own traumatic experience and how she’s able to overcome life’s challenges. As founder of coffee alternative Rasa, Lopa also discusses how we can heal through alternative energy sources and intentional living.

Episode Highlights

The Inspiration Behind Rasa

  • After a series of traumatic events in 2015, Lopa needed a new way of energizing herself.
  • She realized that coupling coffee with Ayurveda practices was overwhelming for the nervous system.
  • Lopa then worked with an herbalist to create Rasa, a coffee alternative that utilizes energy from within yourself.
  • Rasa creates a stress buffer so people can get out of the stressed state and make better decisions.

Lopa’s Story

  • Lopa was spiritually hungry ever since she learned about enlightenment at 16 years old.
  • She received a lot of training and exposure to Ayurveda. However, it ended up being a traumatic situation: her teacher was power-abusive.
  • Lopa left, but it primed her to get into an even worse situation.

How to Regain Balance After a Traumatic Event

  • We have experienced a global 2020, but we may have also experienced a “personal 2020.”
  • Modern society’s technological and business-heavy environment isn’t conducive to sensitivity and intentional living.
  • Start small and start easy. Do the next easiest and most pleasurable thing that you are willing to do.
  • If you’re in a tough situation, taking one deep breath might be the next easiest and most pleasurable thing to do.
  • Celebrate all the small steps and immerse yourself in that celebration.

Technology Fasting

  • Too much exposure to technology can leave you feeling fragmented and overwhelmed with information.
  • You need to have extra space for metacognitive awareness. Place boundaries on technology usage.
  • Build rules which can eventually become rituals, so you can apply intentional living.

Balancing Multiple Responsibilities and Replenishing Energy

  • Constant discernment, recalibration, and assessment are needed.
  • Yoga helps cultivate discernment and an awareness of your cup.
  • Cultivating praise and gratitude can help you shift away from victim orientation.
  • Focus on the things where you have freedom.

How to Practice Intentional Living

  • You can make anything a ritual by aligning your body, energy, and mind. When these aspects are not aligned, you spill energy.
  • Notice the rituals that you already have before making new ones.
  • Connect with yourself and your bigger context to know what you want. Create your rituals from that connection.
  • Find nourishment from what’s already present in your circumstances.

5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode

[09:31] “If we do not unturn those stones in the process of excavating, you know, our egoic self or you know, our narratives of who we are, then we run the risk of expanding what is already there.”

[14:17] “You have to start small and you have to start easy. Like, you have to do the next easiest, pleasurable thing that you are willing to do.”

[19:04] “Sometimes it helps to put those guardrails on and to have those rules. And then eventually it becomes something that doesn't feel like an imposition on yourself, but feels like a way that you're respecting and nourishing yourself.”

[21:25] “I think that the most important thing that we can do is really find where that value is for yourself and know what those inputs are for you to recalibrate and to renourish and to add more energy into your cup as opposed to seeping it out.”

[37:24] “It can be really helpful to start making a list and just, like, keep a running list of the things that make you feel good, just like, you know, it doesn't have to be, like, where you sit down and just pour it all out in 20 minutes or an hour. But like, you just keep adding to it.”

About Lopa

Lopa van der Mersch is the founder and CEO of Rasa, a coffee alternative that is energizing, healthy, and sustainable. After going through a series of traumatic events in 2015, she noticed that coffee only worsened her stress levels. Lopa looked for the "perfect coffee alternative" but didn't find one. Her answer was to make her own coffee alternative and run a business, all while being a wife and a mother of two.

Lopa is passionate about the environment and has co-founded two climate solution companies, worked with Richard Branson's Carbon War Room, and lobbied at the United Nations. She is also keen on spirituality and spent most of her 20s in deep study of Ayurveda, Yoga, and Kashmiri Shaivite Tantra.

If you want to know more about Lopa and her work, you can follow her on Linkedin or check out the Rasa website.

Love Without a Reason with LaRayia Gaston

We live in a harsh, cruel, and uncaring world. Our external environment does not promote vulnerability and loving others . Instead, we are taught to only look out for ourselves. Despite having so many resources and love to share and give, we complain about how unfair and sad the world is.

In today's episode, LaRayia Gaston shares her experiences with giving to and loving others. She talks about the power of showing up and how little things have more impact than we think.

Do you feel like you are not doing enough? If you want to find out what you can contribute to the world, this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn more about loving others in all facets of life.
  2. Discover the four things you can contribute to the world.
  3. Gain valuable insights about LaRayia's book and what inspired her to write it.

Resources

Episode Highlights

What Inspired LaRayia to Write Her Book

  • At first, LaRayia did not know the magnitude of bringing love in so many places.
  • From speaking, traveling, and hearing from other people, she always received the common question of how she got into the place of love she is in right now.
  • She wanted to reflect on her journey, and thus, she intimately explains in her book how she found love and where it came from.
  • LaRayia wrote about her discovery of love, a blueprint to sharpen our lens and view of the world.

The Most Surprising Thing LaRayia Learned About Herself

  • LaRayia allowed herself to sit back and honor her journey and discoveries.
  • She realized that she never had one space in the journey where she betrayed her heart.
  • She was always advocating for underdogs and never backed down when it came to loving others, vulnerability, and doing the right thing.
  • LaRayia realized the level of boldness she had.

Why People Stop Caring

  • Our external world does not support caring for and loving others. It does not support being vulnerable.
  • We then decide to be what the world chose us to be, and people end up suffering.
  • We should work together and empower ourselves to show up for the collective.
  • Bring love to all facets of your life.
  • We have to rediscover what it is to be human, coming from a soul place. We have it as children, but our external world slowly chips that away.

How to Keep Moving Forward with Love

  • LaRayia has been in every emotion of sadness and anger, but she doesn't let herself stay there.
  • The only peace that she has is doing her part to help people.
  • She cannot allow herself to wallow in emotions because tears won't solve problems in the world.
  • LaRayia is very conscious and aware of her moments, and she has peace in doing her part.
  • Empowerment comes from showing up and trying to do your part.

What Showing Up Looks Like

  • Time, food, talent, and money are everyday things we can contribute to the world.
  • We should give what we have. Instead, we are giving what we think we can spare or what doesn't have value in our eyes anymore.
  • We measure change and impact; big is better is not always true.
  • Become more attentive to other people’s needs. The more you become attuned with your spirit and energy, the more you can tell when someone's in need.
  • The most valuable thing that we can do is ask ourselves how we are part of the solution.

Love Without Reason: The Lost Art of Giving a F*ck

  • LaRayia wanted to make loving others and showing up actionable, tangible things.
  • Her book is a self-help book on how people can be better in different ways.
  • The most important thing we have to do is get back to our center of love so that we can show up without the world's influences.

5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode

[09:57] “Give yourself the opportunity to show up as the person you believe you are, as opposed to just what you want everybody to think you are.”

[13:22] “Love doesn't just happen. I believe you have to bring it.”

[20:02] “I am doing everything I can. It's not my job to solve the world, but it is my job to conquer myself and to understand what I'm supposed to do in the world, and there’s peace in that.”

[26:10] “Impact isn't connected to velocity and something huge and grand. Sometimes turning points are small moments, and I think that if we're more aware of that mentally, that we always have something to give, then we will.”

[33:29] “The important part is what are we doing on a daily basis and sometimes, it starts with just acceptance and love and being kind to each other.”

About LaRayia

When LaRayia Gaston moved to Los Angeles from New York City, she was shocked by the extreme poverty level she saw on the streets of DTLA. She immediately wanted to help. After spending some time with people in the Skid Row community, LaRayia felt a tug at her heart and knew this was her calling.

She founded Lunch On Me, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending starvation while providing opportunities to enrich the mind, body & spirit of LA and NYC’s homeless community.

Lunch On Me feeds and serves over 10,000 plus homeless individuals and families every month. LaRayia is shifting how we address the issues of homelessness and hunger in America through nourishment and self-care. 2. Learn how you can become fully charged and incorporate positive energy in your own life and other people’s lives.
  3. Understand what it means to have a work-life balance and how to achieve it.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Meaghan in 2020

  • What Meaghan liked about the pandemic was it helped her become unafraid to fail. If she failed at something, she could just blame it on the situation.
  • She became Editor-in-Chief of Women’s Day a week before the lockdown, so she didn’t get to meet her new team.
  • On top of that, as her children became homeschooled, she needed to learn how to teach them.
  • She sees herself as an expert problem solver, so she filled her book with tips, tricks, and strategies you can use in your day-to-day life.
  • Meaghan trained herself to become fully-charged, so she knows anyone can do it.

What Meaghan Learned While Writing Her Book

  • She talks about meditation in her book and how it has undeniable power.
  • At first, she thought meditation wasn’t for her, but when she got COVID, she found herself downloading a meditation app, laying in bed, and doing it for an hour.
  • Awareness is key.
  • According to Meaghan, back in fifth grade, she said she was the embodiment of negativity.
  • In order to be happy, you have to do Happiness is not a state of being; it is a state of doing.

How to Become Fully Charged and Where Energy Comes From

  • When you’re depleted, you feel stuck, drained, with low energy and negative thoughts.
  • On the other hand, being fully charged means building your energy reserves up so that when you feel down, you can power on through.
  • Making one positive choice after the other is like depositing goodness in the energy bank, and having reserves to become fully charged and get fired up.
  • It’s not about just looking at the bright side. It’s about looking at all sides and choosing the bright side in spite of everything else. You choose to move forward.

Moving Past Hurdles in Life

  • When her father died and she had to deal with that grief, she simply set out to find one thing that did not suck everyday.
  • She called it operation. Since she could not lie in bed and hide under the covers, she had to get up and keep her children alive.
  • It taught her to prioritize positivity.
  • When you can seek out the good and put it front and center, you rewire your brain.
  • After doing this, she automatically sees the silver lining in things without working hard for it.

Embracing Integration and Connecting All the Parts of Your Life

  • What work-life balance suggests is that all aspects of your life are always equal.
  • For Meaghan, it’s all about synergy.
  • She made her children a part of her work by showing them her office and the things that she does in her job.
  • We need to recognize each other’s humanity in all situations.
  • It seems like what’s causing unhappiness in work is the belief that work life is supposed to be separate from our personal lives.

Letting Go of Control

  • Letting go of control is usually scary and hard to do.
  • It’s one of those things where you won’t know how good it feels until you’ve had a taste.
  • When you have not become fully charged, or are not living a life filled with optimism and joy, it is easy to roll your eyes at the notion of it.
  • You don’t need to have drastic changes in your life. You just have to use what you have right now to change your perspective, so you can restructure what you see in your life.

Managing Everybody’s Energy

  • Meaghan likes to lead with joy and fun. She’s the first on her team to say that they get to make magazines for a living—they are not curing cancer.
  • She says if people can’t have fun while working, then they shouldn’t be working.
  • When we were kids, we used to get stars and trophies for doing well. For people working now, where do they get validation?
  • To achieve wellness, we need to feel accomplished in something.
  • The bottomline is that you can never control what somebody is going to do. You can’t control their stress or their response to a situation—all you can do is protect yourself and emit positive energy.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[12:30] “And that's what your fully-charged life is. It's a happiness toolkit. It's not even a happiness handbook. It's a happiness toolkit. And it's filled with these tricks and tips and strategies that allow you to weather any storm with optimism and grace.”

[23:15] “But living fully charged means, okay, well, how do you build the energy reserves so that when you feel that crappy, you can power back up? Right? Because if you make a series of positive choices, it's like you're depositing goodness in the energy bank.”

[26:06] “And when you're able to do that, when you're able to seek out the good and put it front and center, you rewire your brain.”

[30:35] “I mean, the lines are blurring. Everything is changing. I mean, it's a new work world. That's absolutely for sure. And, I also think there are moments when it's important to, you know, kind of compartmentalize.”

[35:37] “And I am the first person to say to my team on repeat, we get to make magazines for a living. We're not curing cancer. Like if we can't have fun doing this we shouldn't be working.”

Achieve Peak Performance through Hard Work and Mindfulness with Steven Kotler

Do you often find yourself giving up when things get hard? Are you more interested in instant gratification? Most people will say yes to these questions. After all, taking the easy way out feels safe and comfortable. But the truth is we are biologically designed to reach peak performance; we just need hard work  to achieve it.

In today’s episode, Steven Kotler will share with us why fear and hardship make us quit. And as one of the world’s leading experts on human performance, he will also talk to us about hard work to manage our fears and anxiety to reach our peak performance. He will also discuss what triggers our flow.

Tune in to the full episode and learn how you can train to reach the impossible.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn how fear motivates you.
  2. Discover how you can motivate yourself to reach your peak potential.
  3. Steven shares the foundations of the flow.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Fear and the Impossible

  • Some people become successful in life because they overcome the impossible. They reinvent themselves to make their dreams a possibility and a reality.
  • Steven explains this is important to know because nobody starts at their peak. We begin with a combination of focus and
  • Fear can direct you to where you need to focus.
  • The key is learning how to manage your fear and anxiety and turn them into a challenge that you can overpower.
  • Listen to the full episode to learn why fear is essential in overcoming the impossible.

Dealing with Fear Using Hard Work

  • Reaching the impossible becomes hard because powering through your fears — real or imagined — is challenging.
  • Start with motivation, then focus on goals. After that, you put hard work on your grit skills.
  • This is not a quick process; you need to keep going until you have enough grit skills as your foundation.
  • You’re going to be truly successful if you have a solid foundation and the perseverance to work hard on your fear.
  • This is similar to how athletes train to be their best before taking on risks.

Understanding Peak Performance

  • Flow or peak performance is the optimal state of consciousness that occurs when you feel and perform your best. When you’re in the flow, everything — creativity, learning, productivity — is amplified.
  • There are 22 known triggers to the flow. They work by either increasing dopamine or norepinephrine — focusing chemicals — in our system, lowering the cognitive load, or both.
  • The most important trigger is a complete concentration on your task. Michael Posner, a former psychologist at the University of Oregon, also explains the importance of meditation for your flow training.
  • Everybody can get into the flow because we are biologically designed to do so.

What Is Peak Performance Training?

  • Peak performance training starts with an extrinsic motivation
  • These extrinsic things often fuel your anxiety or fear, which drives your motivation and focus.
  • After overcoming them, you move to intrinsic motivators, like curiosity, which lets you develop your passion and pursue hard work to fulfill it.
  • Your passion drives you to have a purpose, which leads to your need for autonomy. And autonomy requires mastery.
  • Tune in to the full episode to learn about the role of these factors in your peak performance.

How Anxiety and Depression Affects the Flow

  • It is essential to understand that while anxiety fuels our motivation, it can also dampen it.
  • This happens because two known causes of anxiety — genes and trauma — affect our ability to focus.
  • However, research also shows that these causes don’t necessarily translate to anxiety disorders. Genetics is only half of the factor, and trauma may also lead to post-traumatic growth.
  • The remaining six causes often occur because we can’t find our motivation to work on the flow.

Using Grit and Motivation as Foundations

  • Physical grit is simple to train because we are all built to be persevering. Training it is working on it consistently.
  • The next level of grit is controlling your thoughts, and this is where mindfulness training becomes essential.
  • Motivations are as crucial as grit in creating solid foundations for peak performance because it pushes you to work on your fear and determination.
  • If you find your motivation and start working on your goals, your body releases the reward chemicals you need. And these chemicals also help you train your grit.
  • However, it is essential to note that laying down these foundations is neither easy nor fast. They need constant work.

  Important Notes on the Flow

  • Although the flow works wonders, it can also have adverse effects because it can blur your understanding of the past, present, and the future or the deep now.
  • Since it takes years to train, we may initially feel demotivated, especially since we often seek instant gratification.
  • But working on your grit and motivation, as well as reaching your flow, is the ultimate gratification you can get.
  • Do the hard work slowly because it takes time to cultivate your passion.

5 Powerful Quotes

[06:53] “Learn to use fear as a compass and what I mean by that is — and you don’t start really in peak performance — if you’re sort of following your biology, there’s a sequence, there’s an order, and you don’t really go directly head-on at fear for a little while.”

[15:27] “Triggers (of focus) work by doing one of three things. They either drive dopamine into our system, they drive norepinephrine into our system or they lower cognitive load, or they do some combination.”

[19:49] “Everybody can get into flow, right? Man, women, children the age, the old. It is universal. It shows up in anyone anywhere provided certain initial conditions.”

[23:30] “What we call passion is nothing more than like the intersection of multiple curiosities, right? You just got to live there for a little while and let it grow into passion.”

[38:21] “Grit without flow is misery. Like, flat out. You can’t have it like it’s technically — grit without flow is burnout.”

Episode Highlights

Getting into PR Work

  • Natasha works with people she calls “healers.” They are coaches, personal trainers, yoga teachers, and anyone who has a self-improvement message.
  • Growing up in a family of two psychologists, she has always been surrounded by healers.
  • This background led her to the mindset that when something is not working in life, the first place to look is within. Her passion lies in bringing this message to people.
  • Despite being surrounded by healers, Natasha knew it wasn’t her path. Instead, she realized that she is a communicator.
  • Natasha went from being a journalist in the traditional press to being a marketer and then starting a PR agency.

On Being Seen

  • Natasha’s mom said that every psychologist is first a patient. To some degree, a lack of something drives hearts to become passionate and explore that particular thing.
  • PR is about tapping into the voice of being authentic, opening up, and being seen. Some people would choose different methods to do this.
  • While PR is a business tool, it is also a personal growth tool for reconnecting with your message and yourself. You can use this to learn how to share your story.
  • For Natasha, also has a personal journey of reconnecting with her voice in PR.

Everybody’s Story Is Worth Sharing

  • Listening to other people’s personal stories is how we get nuggets of wisdom that we can relate to. This is an advantage when you share your story.
  • You should learn how to share your story. There is so much healing into just speaking out loud.
  • After speaking and accepting your suffering, the only thing left is to offer it publicly. Growth will follow after you share your story.
  • Everybody has a seed of a story in them that wants to grow and flourish. It is not easy, but it is empowering.
  • It is common for both beginners and experienced entrepreneurs to doubt the worth of their story.

Losing Her Voice

  • Natasha worked as a journalist from 15 to 20 years old. Then, she felt that she had a voice — she's sharing about things that mattered to her.
  • After deciding she’s finished with journalism, she lost her voice. While she would still produce a lot of writing for other people, nothing comes out when she’s writing for herself.
  • For years, Natasha was disconnected from her voice and the things she wanted to share. Hence, empowering her clients in sharing their voices is also a personal journey for her.

Confidence and Insecurity

  • Natasha can relate to people who know they have a message but still don't know what it is.
  • Even if you’re not going public with your story, it’s worth searching for to help you with personal development.
  • Listen to the full episode to learn Natasha’s wonderful exercise on how you can tap into your message!

Tapping into a Source of Love

  • Despite everything that's going on in the world, Natasha has felt so much universal love in the last couple of months.
  • She feels radically loved by pretty much anything because she has a connection to the radical life.

How to Live with Purpose with Mike Bayer

Every day, we make countless decisions that range from mundane to life-changing. If you find yourself stuck at one of these crossroads, what do you do? How do you weigh one option against another? Our guest teaches us that whenever we find ourselves confused or lost about the next step, it helps to get clear on our “why” so that we can live with purpose .

In this episode, Mike Bayer teaches us how to clarify our purpose. Instead of mindlessly choosing based on short-term pleasures, getting clear on our “why” helps us act in line with our long-term vision. Mike shares the F.O.R.C.E acronym as a useful tool for discernment and decision-making. He also teaches how to recognize internal coaches and find good communities that support our highest good.

Tune in to the full episode to learn how you can live with purpose!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Recognize and hack distorted thinking using F.O.R.C.E.
  2. Find out how to spot good and authentic coaches.
  3. Discover how to be honest with yourself and live with purpose.

Episode Highlights

Mike’s Story

  • Mike turned his life around by refusing to be chained by the environment he grew up in and becoming a victor of circumstance.
  • Although the pandemic is exceptionally challenging, Mike admits that he went through harder moments in the past.
  • Mike started rewriting his book during COVID-19. Later on, he decided to dedicate it to the lost and lonely.
  • Sometimes, the things we create are what we and others need to hear.

Slowing Down, Being Grateful

  • While rewriting the book, Mike made sure to add stories of how people are working through the current crisis.
  • Mike has to remind himself every now and then to be grateful for the success he enjoys today.
  • He admits it’s been like a trip beyond his wildest dreams, from writing bestsellers to speaking for large audiences.
  • Despite being in the limelight for two and half years, Mike still struggles to balance taking ownership of his success and being humble.

Understanding the F.O.R.C.E.

  • Mike developed a coaching formula for anyone who feels lost or disconnected using the cognitive behavioral therapy framework.
  • The F.O.R.C.E is an acronym that stands for five cognitive distortions. F represents fortune-telling, O for overgeneralizing, R for rigid thinking, C for confused purpose, and E for emotional reasoning.
  • The solution to these cognitive distortions can be found in the same acronym. Fact-finding is the antidote to fortune-telling, objective thinking to overgeneralizing, relaxation to rigid thinking, clarified purpose to confused purpose, and evidence-based thinking to emotional reasoning.
  • Before making a decision, make sure to check the filter you’re using to assess the situation. If it falls under the five cognitive distortions, use the corresponding acronym to break out of that mental loop.

On Coaching

  • Mike believes that a sense of community is an essential component in inspiring change.
  • It’s more challenging to create and maintain that connection during the pandemic.
  • For Mike, the first step to change is to be fully honest with yourself.
  • In the end, we’re all coaches and experts in life. However, the moment you think you have all the answers is when you stop becoming a coach.

The Right Coach

  • Mike cautions against coaches who sell easy and quick fixes.
  • Coming from a clinical background, Mike suggests that it’s unethical to sell something to someone trying their best to recover from trauma.
  • There’s a big difference between a coach speaking to help and one speaking to sell.
  • According to Mike, it’s best to let people be vulnerable rather than inviting them to expensive therapies.
  • You have internal resources that you can always draw on to improve yourself. If you can’t afford to get professional help, several communities offer free assistance.

Being Honest with Yourself

  • As long as you’re not hurting anyone, there’s no wrong intention or motivation.
  • Having worked in TV and show business, Mike discovered that most people rarely want to change others' lives.
  • What you’re saying to others has to be congruent with your inner truth. Be honest and lean into what you want to do.
  • As long as you’re true to yourself, people will support you.
  • Whatever you’re doing has to fit into your long-term vision and be aligned with your values.

Live with Purpose

  • If you ever have to choose between becoming well-known or helping other people, know that the former feels empty and the latter more meaningful.
  • Whenever you have to make a similar decision, take a step back and clarify your purpose. Why do you do what you do, and why do you love what you love?
  • This wisdom can apply in even the most mundane circumstance. If you feel out of place at an event, revisit why you came in the first place. Often, you’ll discover that it’s not about you.
  • With clarity, it becomes easier to live with purpose and make decisions from that place of discernment.
  • For Mike, to live with purpose feels like being wrapped in a giant hug. He admits it feels much better than being in the New York Times bestselling authors list.

Radically Loved

  • Mike feels radically loved when he’s with someone who accepts him perfectly and unconditionally.
  • He recalls a time during prayer when he heard a voice that asked him to satisfy his hunger first.
  • The spiritual is not limited to the divine and the sacred but can be something as simple as taking care of your needs or taking a deep breath.

5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode

[15:08] “So before making a decision, especially decisions that are creating a lot of anxiety or fear, it's really good to check our filter. That's kind of the filtering system where it helps people get out of that cognitive loop of the same fear just coming up every day and into kind of the facts of life.”

[22:23] “We're all in this together. I think as soon as a coach becomes uncoachable or has all the answers, it's a dead-end street.”

[29:44] “We're all artists. And it's just when you're continually pushing yourself to just be great in your art, the universe connects you with other art, and you get to play and have fun.”

[47:41] “Clarifying our purpose each day matters, and making a decision to do that matters. It creates this amazing spiritual experience, or whatever someone believes, where we're like, ‘I belong here.’”

[50:31] “I was very successful before I became a New York Times bestselling author. It didn't make me any more successful like it didn't give me a giant hug. What gives me a giant hug is being purposeful in my life.”

Recovering and Rediscovering Yourself through Mindful Movement with Darcy Stubbings

Nowadays, we have easier access to many vices or the so-called “metaphorical band-aids.” Alcohol, drugs, entertainment, and social media prevent us from feeling our emotions and practicing mindful movement . They give us temporary relief from our needs and pain. Whenever we feel lost, seeking these things is often one of our first solutions. However, allowing ourselves to drown in vices can have a detrimental effect on our lives, health, and relationships.

In today’s episode, Darcy Stubbings joins us to discuss his triumph over addiction and finding self-love after years of struggle. He shares his journey to mental wellness and practicing mindful movement. Darcy explains why our society needs to ask more of the “whys” instead of the “whats” of addiction. He delves deeper into self-sabotaging behaviors and narrates why, for him, this year is all about rediscovering himself.

If you’re afraid of confronting your problems and are using different ways to numb your emotions, this episode is for you.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Gain valuable insights from Darcy’s long journey toward healing after his weed and alcohol addiction.
  2. Learn more about self-sabotaging behaviors and why people fall from them.
  3. Find out how mindful movement, yoga, and meditation helped Darcy connect with himself and others.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Darcy’s Mental Health Challenges Over the Years

  • Darcy struggled with anxiety, depression, and addiction to marijuana and alcohol.
  • For him, sobriety means a deep loving connection with ourselves and the world. Yoga and meditation taught him the importance of connecting with his innate sacredness.
  • His mental health struggles are the biggest challenges of his life. Darcy numbed and pushed down his feelings for a long time through vices.
  • The surge of “metaphorical band-aids” is a hurdle in our society. They give temporary relief but never solve anything.
  • Forgiving, communicating, and loving ourselves and those around us are essential in healing.

Addictions as Band-Aids

  • Society often asks questions about the “whats” of addiction instead of the “whys.” To experience life in its fullness, you have to open yourself to its fullness.
  • Darcy described addiction as a beautiful warm hug and a cry for help. It fills a void that people are not willing to meditate in.
  • Challenging childhoods can lead to heavy addictions. Darcy describes that privileged people also feel the need to numb themselves.
  • For a long time, Darcy defined himself through his athletic abilities. He called this “band-aid” when he was young. However, injuries took them away from him. He was suddenly left to unearth deep-seated insecurities in his life.
  • Addiction is challenging. It makes people think that they have solved the problem, which is never the case.

On Self-Sabotaging Behaviors

  • Look at the concept of mindful witness, which can help you avoid falling into destructive behavior.
  • He feels grateful for those who showered him with help and unconditional love when he was struggling.
  • Meditation creates an impartial, forgiving, and compassionate perspective on our behaviors.
  • Darcy lists critical questions that society has to ask about addiction, trauma, and pain.
  • Discover remarkable psychological techniques and meditations to help you avoid falling into self-sabotaging behaviors. Listen to the full episode to learn more!

Mindful Movement

  • Practicing mindful movement allows Darcy to connect with his body and enable him to make wise decisions.
  • Don’t focus on how you look. It’s more important to know how you feel when you move.
  • Feeling our bodies is a vital step to healing.
  • Learning Koshas through yoga helped Darcy realize we are all connected, which is contrary to Western teachings. Everything within and around us is one.

Overcoming Trauma and Darcy’s Focus for This Year

  • Darcy used to speak to himself negatively. This brought him pain for a long time. Tune in and hear his recommendations on books about trauma and overcoming it.
  • We can impose our insecurities on the next generation. To avoid this, we should compassionately embark on our conscious journey.
  • Trauma is more than an event. It is also the effect on our nervous system and behavioral patterns.
  • It’s vital to give unconditional love and compassion to anyone who is struggling. We should avoid judging and casting them to the edge of society.
  • This year, Darcy will focus on rediscovering himself. He aims to explore and compassionately inquire into why he felt the need to numb.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[13:31] “The challenge with addiction is that it initially feels like you have solved the problem. And as I'm sure you know, that's not the case.”

[22:55] “The difference between running away from something that was numbing and creating these shackles in your life compared to being super stoked about stepping into a new life without those things. I feel it's that ability to develop that compassionate inquiry within.”

[30:40] “And I really enjoyed learning about the Koshas through yoga because it just made sense to me that we aren't separated like we're taught in our Western biomedical model. Everything within me and everything around me is one.”

[33:20] “We impose our own insecurities and our own deficiencies on the next generation unless we compassionately and lovingly embark on our own conscious journey.”

[35:19] “It must start with the simplicity of unconditional love for anyone who is going through a tough time. Not judging, not like casting them to the edge of society, or putting them in jails--- which is quite often the end result of someone who's going through heavy addiction. It's extending a loving hand and just saying as a society: how can we include all people in this prosperity, not just the ones that have the easiest path?

About Darcy

Darcy Stubbings is a physiotherapist and a meditation coach. After a long battle with weed and alcohol addiction, Darcy is now committed to sobriety and lending his voice, which he gained from mindful movement and meditation, to help people overcome their vices.

Honoring the Roots of Yoga with Susanna Barkataki

Yoga is now so popular that people tend to overlook and honor the cultural roots of the practice. For some, yoga is only a trend, a part of an aesthetic experience, or simply a pastime. These may seem offensive to those who honor the roots of yoga . However, Susanna Barkataki shares that it only takes some guidance and understanding.

Episode Highlights

Susanna’s Personal Experience on Appropriation

  • Susanna grew up in Los Angeles and has a mixed culture — she is half-white and half-Indian. She was made fun of as a child for things part of her family’s culture and heritage.
  • Later on, she witnessed white women sporting the same parts of her culture, yet they were deemed hip, “in,” or cool.
  • This experience is what led her to study cultural appropriation and educate others.
  • You cannot understand cultural appropriation without understanding power systems like oppression, colonization, or white supremacy.
  • Yoga is a way of life. It is not something you do. It is something you are.

How Current Events Helped Susanna’s Message

  • In their youth, Susanna and her peers have been advocating issues regarding how the system has been failing many.
  • The Black Lives Matter movement amplified their advocacies.
  • However, it is unfortunate that lives had to be lost for people to see the urgency.

On Non-Natives Practicing and Teaching Yoga

  • It is entirely up to how willing they are to dive deeper into the roots of yoga and learn the practice.
  • It’s important to get in touch with teachers who are from the lineage.
  • Susanna poses questions for those who aspire to be teachers of yoga.
  • She suggests that there’s more to explore, significantly beyond concepts of yoga that are “popularized.”

On Cultural Appropriation and Power Imbalance

  • The two criteria for cultural appropriation are power imbalance and harm.
  • Power imbalance is the dominant culture you see when you think of a yoga space. Nowadays, it’s those who are privileged.
  • Susanna talks about harm. Her teachers and their teachers don’t mix alcohol with their practice. Yogic texts prohibit drinking and consider it disrespectful.
  • Be careful with tattoos and t-shirt prints, as well as using sacred symbols. Think about whether there is a power imbalance and whether there would be harm.
  • For more information on the harmful effects of cultural appropriation, listen to the podcast.

How Sanskrit Can Deepen Our Understanding

  • You should remain a student to deepen your knowledge.
  • Teachers should also learn the Sanskrit of poses.
  • As a teacher, you don’t necessarily have to speak them out loud but, at the very least, understand the concept from the language.
  • Susanna can teach even preschoolers using the language.
  • Listen to the podcast to learn more about how to be a proper yoga teacher!

Learning from Mistakes

  • Sometimes, mistakes do happen, and you can’t be entirely perfect.
  • Susanna encourages those wanting to get into spiritual practice to put in the effort and educate themselves.
  • Susanna talks about her book, which discusses the roots of yoga. Make sure to listen to the full episode to hear more!

Correcting Mistakes

  • Someone might get discouraged if they are told they are wrong.
  • If you’re a teacher, it’s better to be open and collaborative rather than critical.
  • You can ask questions out of curiosity and the need to understand.
  • From there, you can make gentle suggestions and guide others.

Uplifting Others

  • Susanna appreciates people who actively want to learn because it means they are tuning in.
  • When people want to learn, minorities feel heard.
  • People who aren’t of color can use their privilege for cultural healing.

Yoga in the Time of a Crisis

  • Because of the current global situation, people are finding themselves more anxious and stressed.
  • It is essential to serve the soul.
  • You can find authentic yoga teachers.
  • In times of grief, yoga can show up in different forms to support us.
  • Your yoga practice can create something for the community beyond the mat.

5 Powerful Quotes from the Episode

[04:26] “Well, yoga isn’t really something that you do, it’s something that you are.”

[07:57] “For a lot of us, we’ve been here, we’ve been having these conversations, we’ve been doing the work, but no one was really listening until the pressure got too high.”

[09:02] “I think there’s a feeling of empowerment, to both speak up and say what’s wrong and what’s not working, and also empowerment to collaborate and to uplift intersectionality.”

[25:14] “When you think about the preservation of a culture, it’s story, it’s language, it’s practice, it’s a ritual. And so I really do think yoga teachers everywhere should learn Sanskrit.”

[37:33] “I think true yoga can show up for us, and be a support, and be a life raft.”

About Susanna

Susanna Barkataki is a self-published author, teacher, and advocate for many causes, including yoga culture. As a child and immigrant to the US, she had experienced a lot of violence because of her ethnicity and culture. Despite this, she learned to love herself and even liberate herself with a core part of her culture—yoga.

Susanna’s mission is to raise awareness on how yoga is a lifestyle, rather than just an exercise. She seeks to spread the message of inclusivity and hopes that people will unite through yoga one day.

Setting Up Good Habits and Boundaries That Stick with

Jen Sincero

“New year, new me!” That's what we always say at the beginning of a new year. It's when we all set new goals for ourselves. However, staying committed to your new habits and goals can be challenging. This 2021, learn how you can establish good habits that stick with today's guest!

In this episode, Jen Sincero talks to us about forming habits and setting boundaries, the topic of her new book, Badass Habits. She also shares her thoughts on her success and gives advice on how to break down the roadblocks we set up for ourselves and the ones around us.

If you want to learn how you can be a better version of yourself, tune in to this episode!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn how to set up good habits that you’ll keep doing.
  2. What are the common roadblocks in setting good habits?
  3. Discover the power of manifestation and how you can apply it to your life.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Setting Boundaries and Good Habits

  • We’ll always find reasons not to do the things that will help us grow.
  • The trick is to stay conscious of the feeling of having accomplished whatever it is you are trying to accomplish.
  • There may be so many things you'd prefer to do than exercise, but remember how good it makes your body feel. Conjure up the excitement around feeling that way.
  • Chunking it down also helps—even if you don’t feel like doing it, do it for 5 minutes.
  • Overwhelming yourself will knock you down before you even get started.

Celebrating Yourself

  • According to Jen, in our culture in general, we suck at celebrating.
  • We are always so quick to look at the negative side of things instead of our accomplishments.
  • We must get into the habit of celebrating ourselves.
  • Part of celebrating yourself is the reward, but it is more about acknowledging that you were able to do something challenging.
  • Don’t completely deny yourself!

Usual Roadblocks

  • Other people, especially the ones closest to us, can be our biggest roadblocks.
  • Sometimes, they fill us with fear and tell us all their worries about why it’s not going to work or make fun of us.
  • The people closest to us have the most to lose if we change and grow. They might feel threatened by your growth.
  • Surround yourself with people who support you.

Dealing with Obstacles

  • One obstacle for Jen is her quick temper.
  • Being aware of the obstacle is the key to everything.
  • Set up good habits to figure out ways to do what you want.
  • You can also do this by hanging out with new people, rather than those who keep repeating negative beliefs and thoughts.

The Problem Everyone Has in Common

  • The biggest problem everyone usually has is not moving forward because they don’t want to be abandoned by the people who love them.
  • Another one is the fake decision, where you want something and do everything to make it happen. However, the second it gets hard, you figure you don’t want it anymore.
  • The real decision is: instead of figuring out a good reason not to do something, you figure out a way to do it.

The Power of Manifestation

  • Not wanting to work hard is a mental construct.
  • It’s hard not doing what you love doing.
  • Keeping the definition of “hard” in perspective is critical.
  • Power manifestation focuses on the heart, that your mind plays in creating what you want out of life.
  • Jen is a big believer in manifestation—when you visualize what you want, you find that you’ve already become that person.

Faking It Until You Make It

  • Back when she couldn’t afford things, Jen’s mantra was that money flows to her easily and freely.
  • She didn’t believe her mantra 100%, but she still decided to believe.
  • The decision to believe is more important than the belief itself.
  • That changes your energy and makes you want to prove your mantra.
  • What we hear and what we say to ourselves create deep grooves inside us that influence how we live.

Insights and Advice for Success

  • If it feels right to you for whatever reason, just do it and don’t listen to what other people say.
  • At first, no one wanted to publish her book, You Are A Badass, which later sold millions of copies.
