Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hi I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

Episode Highlights

Being Together 24/7 During Quarantine

  • You and your partner can be together all day, but it doesn’t mean it’s all quality time together.
  • Finding ways to hang out at home is crucial in a relationship.

How Torry Has Been During the Pandemic

  • Torry talks about his daily routine. Getting dressed helps him stay productive at home.
  • Writing was his way to cope with the pandemic, especially with the career transition he had to go through.
  • He used this time to find inspiration and use his brain in other ways.
  • He talks about staying off social media. There’s a risk of getting uninspired because of social media.

Supporting Each Other in Our Relationship

  • For Torry, he is the type to look for ways to support others instead of him looking into how others can support him.
  • He has the “when you feel helpless, help someone” mentality.
  • On the other hand, I’m the type to ask for comfort and affection when I want to feel better.

Talking About Our Boundaries

  • Know and respect that it’s not always about you.
  • There’s always a kind way to communicate your boundaries.
  • What worked for us is learning how to become independent and giving each other time and space.
  • In the beginning, I struggled with becoming independent, but I eventually figured it out and worked my way towards trusting Torry.
  • It is crucial to find security and confidence in yourself to make a relationship work.

Pieces of Advice from Us

  • Give yourself the time and space to be with yourself.
  • Don’t let desperation make you make bad decisions.
  • Don’t be so attached to needing to find a relationship. It can create other issues within yourself.
  • Manage expectations from your partner.
  • Learn how to say what is bothering you. Give each other the trust and respect to say what they need to say.

3 Ways to Stay Connected with Your Partner

  •
  • Create rituals with each other.
  • Set parameters and reconverge at night.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[07:41] “Rosie had to teach me, train me, to know that just because we’re in the same room doesn’t mean we’re hanging out.”

[22:45] “I think it’s more about just being present and listening and being aware of what the other person needs—and setting boundaries as well.”

[24:29] “I guess some simple tips would be to just know and respect and realize that it’s not always about you.”

[31:02] “Even in relationships now, you know, or marriages that have had hard times, it really comes down to how secure are you in the marriage, especially if there’s been issues, or if somebody stepped out, or if there’s been dishonesty in the relationship.”

[42:56] “Attachment is premeditated resentment. And what happens when we have resentment? We can create all kinds of other issues within ourselves.”

Keeping Your Life Balanced with Ayurveda Yoga and Sleep Hygiene with James Bailey

Many of us have become accustomed to the rapid and instant nature of this day's tech-savvy world. When it comes to finding balance, we tend to seek quick fixes to alleviate our stress and anxiety. Whether due to impatience or shorter attention span, we've become less immersed and more disconnected from reality and each other.

Too much social media and fast technology have tipped our energies to an imbalanced state filled with stress and anxiety.

Listening to this episode will help you understand how imbalances form. James Bailey also teaches about Ayurveda yoga to improve our health and wellness. He also talks about the importance of healthy sleep and authenticity in healing.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn about how the three doshas and how they can help you achieve the power of authenticity.
  2. Discover how sleep hygiene can lead you to a more mindful and fuller life in this technology-heavy and soundbite-driven world.
  3. How does James feel radically loved?

Resources

Episode Highlights

Changing Times

  • James has had an increase in the number of students with lower attention spans.
  • Everybody wants to learn in soundbites.
  • People prefer rapid information.

Doshas of Ayurveda and Imbalance

  • According to Ayurveda, there are three fundamental energies of the body: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. They manage and control all the physiological functions of the body.
  • Each is sensitive to the external factors we expose ourselves to—stress, food, lifestyle, and even our emotions. They are dynamic energies that fluctuate and change, causing the imbalances we experience.
  • Vata is all about the flow and circulation of the body. It resembles the element of air.
  • Pitta is the principle of conversion and transformation. It exemplifies the changes in the body and represents the fire element.
  • Meanwhile, Kapha is the principles of water and earth. It’s the capacity to generate and rebuild tissues.

Yoga and Tradition

  • The idea of tradition is relative. The way James sees it is there are two kinds of people in the yoga world: traditionalists and innovators.
  • Traditionalists are people who are consistent with the classic texts.
  • On the other hand, innovators challenge tradition and want to make things more personalized.

How Tech Changed Yoga and Its Effect On Us

  • There is no longer a sense of community.
  • This online connectivity creates more disconnection.
  • It also takes away opportunities to collaborate or meet with people around you.
  • Stress and anxiety have become an epidemic, and online platforms reinforce them.

James' Practice for a Healthier Sleep

  • To counter this epidemic, James gave up screen time and worked on sadhana.
  • In their household, the day is over at 9 p.m., all the screens are down from laptops to cell phones, and sadhana space begins.
  • He practices yoga in front of an altar in his room for circulation before going to bed.
  • He does 20 minutes of sun salutations, then 10 minutes of floor postures, and the usual routine of Pranayama mantra. Finally, James practices Yoga Nidra for 10 minutes.
  • It is referred to as sleep hygiene in Western practices.

Benefits of Sleep Hygiene

  • It improves sleep.
  • Sleep hygiene lowers anxiety levels.
  • It also improves concentration.
  • You will feel more present and more mindful.

What's Your Dosha?

  • Everybody has three doshas.
  • The doshas keep fluctuating depending on your last meal, your mood, time of day, stress levels.
  • What does not change, though, is your constitution—your dominant doshas.
  • When your doshas get too high, we get imbalances.
  • We do not want to balance all our doshas but to keep them within our constitution.

Principle of Authenticity

  • Be true to yourself and accept who you are, your strengths and weaknesses.
  • James believes in the power of authenticity when it comes to healing physically and spiritually.
  • We cannot heal if we use remedies that work for someone else.
  • Authenticity is the highest expression of who we are, our self-love, and self-respect.

Ayurveda for You

  • The path toward growth and nourishment is unique for each individual.
  • There is no one-size-fits-all in Ayurveda.
  • There are no trends in Ayurveda that you need to ride.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

“So they want it really quick, they want small points, and it's just really the way the online world has become. I think we've just accepted that we have shorter attention spans because there's so much more to take in.”

“So they're (the doshas) very dynamic in their nature; they fluctuate up and down frequently, which is what causes imbalances.”

“Everybody wants to be something else than what they really are.”

Authenticity is the path when it comes to healing both physically and spiritually because we can't really heal if we're going to use remedies that work for somebody else.”

“There is no Ayurveda for everybody. There's no nutrition for everybody. There's no trends in Ayurveda or in real healing. There's no trends. There's my diet, there's your diet, and all the listeners’ diets should be completely different.”

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[04:38] “I kind of woke up one morning, and I was just like, ‘This is a disaster.’ I'll admit it felt really desperate. It felt like if I didn't do something about this, I was just never gonna get my health back.”

[10:23] “I basically decided that I was going to approach my life with one lens until I’m healthy. If it’s not good for my health, I’m not doing it. If it’s good for my health, I’m doing it. And then the very next thing that popped into my mind is work is not good for my health right now.”

[24:52] “The thing about the body for me and why I love movement so much is because I would say that our issues are in tissues.”

[31:00] “I started Tonal because I wanted to help the world become healthier at the end of the day.”

[32:25] “And that leap of faith, it’s like one of the most powerful things that we have, and we just got to keep doing it.”

[31:15] “And I think food is an ultimate connector as human beings. It doesn't matter what you believe, who you're voting for, what town you live in, what color of your skin, what your sexual orientation is — we all eat.”

[31:57] “I think if the pandemic has taught a lot of us one thing, it is that being home, and slowing down, and connecting with these simple processes of eating, and cooking together, and cooking for our loved ones, and cooking for ourselves. Maybe it's reminded us that these are important things and they aren't things to just rush through.”

[44:32] “I always know that I have been put exactly where I'm supposed to be at the exact right moment I'm supposed to be — good or bad.”

[46:23] “The universe makes me feel like it always has my back. I always feel like I'm in this hammock, sometimes it swings one way or the other, but I'm always supported by it.”
