Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hello Friends, I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

Not only am I a fan of Andrea’s podcast, The Peaceful Power Podcast, but I’m also a big fan of her and what she’s doing in the world. Andrea Claassen is a certified personal trainer and 230 hour yoga instructor. She’s helped hundreds of women meet their fitness goals and find their favorite form of movement.   I met Andrea at Lori Harder’s bliss project and we really hit it off. I resonated with her and her story. Through her own experience with the birthing process, Andrea helps prepare women for having a baby and the post birth healing process.   Andrea shares her insights on becoming a mother, dealing with postpartum, and having a support system.   Radically Strong Andrea   Becoming a mom and gaining a completely new perspective Incorporating Ayurveda during pregnancy and postpartum Going undiagnosed with a tear for weeks after delivery Finding an identity evolution as a new mother   Radically Inspired Clarity   Knowing who can help you out is key as a new parent. Do you ever encounter students who are stuck in the state of suffering? How do people who haven’t experienced connection experience a beautiful state? How can we feel more connected in our inner state now?     Radically Loved Quotes   “If you focus on your internal experience of life and bring a shift to it, your external life will be so much more beautiful.”   “We want to feel whole. LaRayia Gaston is the incredible creator of Lunch on Me. This fun, interactive, non-profit creates a strong community and create strong bonds between the homeless and the housed by providing fresh, organic foods for everyone in need. Love without reason is the heart of everything they do.   This girl is so incredible and she has the most amazing people working with her. She blew me away when I met her at Wanderlust. I saw the love, dedication and passion she has for this community, and I was floored.   LaRayia is one of the most inspirational people I’ve ever met. We spend time talking about her story and her insight into why we need to give, the importance of acknowledgement, and truly experiencing community.   Radically Connected LaRayia   Working as an art director and giving her art purpose Creating a non-profit to end starvation in America Keeping volunteer work a secret and getting inspired when she shared it Setting her own standards for a non-profit and living up to it   Radically Inspired Clarity   Instead of simply having gratitude about what you have, do what you can to help those who don’t have what you do. Little things won’t get to you when you keep in perspective what extreme hardships others are going through.   LaRayia Gaston Answers…   What inspired you to take on starvation in America? How many people do you feed and how often? What have you learned the most since starting this non-profit? How has this impacted your life and how you view your life?   Radically Loved Quotes   “I think everything in my life pushed me to this place.”   “It’s just common sense to me. Someone’s hungry, I have enough to share.”   “Acknowledging everyone has changed my life. I want to be open and acknowledge anyone in my space.”   “My problems aren’t real problems, even hard things.”   A Little More About Our Guest   LaRayia has been volunteering and feeding the homeless for over 12 years. While serving, she’s experienced some of the most life altering moments. Her direct human encounter in poverty and starvation has taught her so much about life, people, community, love and tragedy. One of the most important things about LaRayia’s movement is that "Starvation being alive and well in America is only due to the neglect in redirecting food, that is often treated as waste" In order to make change happen, people have to be educated on the problem. Her mission is to integrate an interactive way to help, by using social media to bring communities together for the greater good. She’s here to end starvation, starting with America.  www.LunchOnMe.org

When we inquire within to identify the source of our reactivity, then share it with our partner, we begin to break free from old, conditioned patterns of behavior that no longer serve us or our relationship. The four most common strategies that most people rely on when they feel threatened are to: Attack Defend Pursue Withdraw Dismantling these kneejerk reactions is a courageous process that requires both self-awareness and self-disclosure, but the results are transformational, Taylor says. The key is to focus on your own experience, without blaming or criticizing your partner. Ask Yourself: What’s Getting Triggered? In other words: Be mindful: Does this response feel familiar to me from childhood or previous relationships? Where might I have learned it and what can I learn from it now? Knowing this, how do I want to respond to my partner? For example, if one partner goes ballistic when her beloved is five minutes late, instead of screaming at him and calling a thoughtless jerk, she might stop to explore why she’s so distressed. In doing so, she may discover that her response has much less to do with her devoted and usually on-time partner than the fact that in childhood her mother never knew what time—or day—her angry alcoholic father might turn up.

This meditation uses words, images, and feelings to evoke a lovingkindness and friendliness toward oneself and others. With each recitation of the phrases, we are expressing an intention, planting the seeds of loving wishes over and over in our heart. With a loving heart as the background, all that we attempt, all that we encounter will open and flow easily. You can begin the practice of lovingkindness by meditating for fifteen or twenty minutes in a quiet place. Let yourself sit in a comfortable fashion. Let your body rest and be relaxed. Let your heart be soft. Let go of any plans and preoccupations. Begin with yourself. Breathe gently, and recite inwardly the following traditional phrases directed to your own well-being. You begin with yourself because without loving yourself it is almost impossible to love others. May I be filled with lovingkindness. May I be safe from inner and outer dangers. May I be well in body and mind. May I be at ease and happy. As you repeat these phrases, picture yourself as your are now, and hold that image in a heart of lovingkindness. Or perhaps you will find it easier to picture yourself as a young and beloved child. Adjust the words and images in any way you wish. Create the exact phrases that best open your heart of kindness. Repeat these phrases over and over again, letting the feelings permeate your body and mind. Practice this meditation for a number of weeks, until the sense of lovingkindness for yourself grows. Be aware that this meditation may at times feel mechanical or awkward. It can also bring up feelings contrary to lovingkindness, feelings of irritation and anger. If this happens, it is especially important to be patient and kind toward yourself, allowing whatever arises to be received in a spirit of friendliness and kind affection. When you feel you have established some stronger sense of lovingkindness for yourself, you can then expand your meditation to include others. After focusing on yourself for five or ten minutes, choose a benefactor, someone in your life who has loved or truly cared for you. Picture this person and carefully recite the same phrases: May you be filled with lovingkindness. May you be safe from inner and outer dangers. May you be well in body and mind. May you be at ease and happy. Let the image and feelings you have for your benefactor support the meditation. Whether the image or feelings are clear or not does not matter. In meditation they will be subject to change. Simply continue to plant the seeds of loving wishes, repeating the phrases gently no matter what arises. Expressing gratitude to our benefactors is a natural form of love. In fact, some people find lovingkindness for themselves so hard, they begin their practice with a benefactor. This too is fine. The rule in lovingkindness practice is to follow the way that most easily opens your heart.

I had the best time and I feel so lucky and fortunate to call her a friend of mine.   Lori and I talk about her incredible story and the transformation that she brought to her own life. Accept that you’re imperfect and you’re learning.   Mastin Kipp Answers…   Does a spiritual journey require us to be fully committed? Or can we do it halfway? You manage to do many activities with full attention, but sometimes there is no mental relaxation. And there are other moments when your awareness seems to have expanded, but the mind is not sharp. Is it then possible to be totally aware, relaxed and happy, as well as have sharpness of intelligence at the same time? Yes, Yoga can help us to achieve this balanced state of awareness that gives clarity and sharpness of mind, as well as calmness and joy. Watch your ‘Thoughts’, they become words. Watch your ‘Words’, they become actions. Watch your ‘Actions’, they become habits. Watch your ‘Habits’, they become character. Watch your ‘Character’, for it becomes your Destiny. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar These are valuable ‘watch’ words for leading a meaningful life. Yoga fine-tunes your mind to a state of relaxed awareness, to live joyfully in the present moment. Take charge of your mind with awareness But why is awareness important? When you act without awareness – you are like a sleepwalker, who doesn’t know where he is walking. You just act on the strongest impulse – your mind controls you. However, when you act with awareness, you are in control of your mind. Your senses become so clear that they can perceive better, see better, think better, hear better. Be established in awareness through Yoga Yoga attends to all aspects of our being – body, mind, breath, emotions and the inner Self. Awareness of breath establishes you in the present moment. Yoga maintains and energizes the body Yoga asanas contribute towards physical well-being. Yoga postures done with full awareness provides a gentle massage to all the internal organs, and leads you to a relaxed state of mind. In a relaxed and steady posture, you can feel a joyful expansion. Yoga helps you become aware of your body, including the pains or discomfort in any part of the body. It is possible to release the pain, by just taking your attention to it. The secret of awareness is to just watch everything that is going on in the body and mind - as a witness. Do not resist, but watch with a smile! Make your life a celebration - with Yoga! Regular practice of Yoga establishes you in the Self; you feel a sense of belongingness with everyone and everything in Creation. You are then at peace with yourself and everything around you. Enhance your good health and energy - by eating with awareness. When you are pre-occupied or feel upset, you tend to eat mindlessly. However when the mind is aware, you are conscious of what you eat and how much you take in. Yoga refines the mind and creates awareness The mind swings back and forth, from the past to the future, drowning you in a whirlpool of thoughts, worries, fears… An effective way to break this chain of thoughts is to become aware of the thoughts. Breath is a powerful tool to deal with the mind. You don’t have to run away to a forest or a cave, to calm down the mind. Yoga with asanas, pranayamas, meditation… can gently guide you on this inner journey. Yoga is the restraint of thought waves. ‘Yogaha chitta vritti nirodaha’(Patanjali Yoga Sutra, I,2) With Yoga, you can attain a pleasant and composed state of mind. When your mind is aware, you are sensitive to other’s feelings and to your surrounding. A clear mind is powerful like a beam, helping you to can take effective decisions. When the mind is calm, creativity dawns; productivity increases. Yoga cultures the speech and kindles dynamic action Living with awareness cultures your speech and actions. You acquire a skill in dealing with people and situations. You do not react to situations or what people say, but respond with calmness. When the mind is aware, you can be proactive instead of provocative - in your speech and actions. Often words just shoot out of the mouth. As you grow in the path of Yoga, your words become more powerful. Yoga leads you to Self-awareness

Eka Ekong is an internationally renowned yoga teacher and teacher trainer. She’s led yoga retreats and workshops around the world. Eka is a close friend of mine who has inspired me so much. The energy that Eka brings into the room at a yoga class made me want to create that energy and experience in my classes, and that’s just the beginning of how she’s inspired me.   With the recently launched Woke Magazine, Eka added Editor in Chief to her resume. I am thrilled to contribute to Woke Magazine and help her bring wellness to a diverse community.   In this episode we talk about the importance of the practice, working with a teacher, Eka’s journey and past career. We talk about everything, and I would love to hear your thoughts on our conversation.   Radically Woke Eka   Circling around the idea of, ‘Why am I here?’ Seeing yoga change her famous employer, and trying it for herself Reluctantly becoming a yoga teacher after taking teaching training simply to learn Creating Woke Magazine to bring wellness to people of color   Radically Inspired Clarity   The practice comes to you. It may be quiet, but it will come and change you. If you’re teaching 15-20 yoga classes a week, your energy changes. If you’re not able to be present, things start to become robotic. What is your intention as a yoga teacher? Do you just want to be in front of a class or do you want to provide a space for your students? If you want to teach, you need to learn first. Stop rushing to get your certification and get clear on your stuff.   Eka Ekong Answers…   How and when did you decide to become a yoga teacher? How do you keep the integrity of your yoga teaching? How can we bring our yoga off the mat?   Radically Loved Quotes   “It’s like you’re bumbling along in the dark and someone gives you a flashlight.”   “The practice has its own ideas and it will change you.”   “The integrity in how you teach comes through your integrity as a person.”   “How you live your life is your message.”   A Little More About Our Guest   When yoga found Eka Ekong, she was just out of college and working in the music industry. Burning herself out, climbing the ladder of “success”, Eka was introduced to yoga. After her first Savasana, something deep inside of her finally exhaled. She felt more embodied, capable and clear. She then practiced as much as she could, taking class at every opportunity. She began to have more sustained moments of grace and understanding of her purpose. Her yoga practice naturally led her to a different career, reshaped her relationships, and helped her find her voice. Yoga has helped Eka know the truth of who she is. It has been her companion through sadness, indecision, joyful and peaceful times. The more she practices, the more she connects to her spirit and remembers the interconnection of all of us.
