Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hello Friends, I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

I’ve got something special for you this week! Remember Henry Ammar, Founder of MakeItHappen.Life, from episode 53? We had an amazing episode on purpose and I’m still hearing about how much you enjoyed it.   For this episode, I decided to record an everyday conversation I had with Henry. We usually have these kinds of conversations off the record, but I wanted you to be able to join us and find value if you choose. Henry is a dear friend of mine and I’m grateful to him for letting me record our conversation.   We talk about investing your time in a way that serves your mission, focusing on your own personal growth, being spiritual and making money, and thriving in challenging experiences.   Radically Purposeful Henry   Asking, ‘What am I doing with my time today and why is it important?’ Functioning in a high frequency place to serve so much better Uncovering self-sabotage to make a greater impact   Radically Inspired Clarity   Our self-growth is one of the greatest things we can invest in to support our mission and the people we serve. Sometimes you have to answer the call even though it’s scary. Ask yourself, ‘What does your soul want that your mind doesn’t?’   Henry Ammar Answers…   What do you do when you feel like you’re over-invested in one thing that gets in the way of everything else you have planned? What is your take on the connection between spirituality and money?   Radically Loved Quotes   “Everybody has a mission. If you don’t have a goal, your goal is to figure out what your goal is.”   “The greatest investments we can make are in ourselves.”   “Hopefully, you don’t recognize me in a year because I’ve changed so much.”   “What could you do with your heart and your mindset if you had an abundance of resources at your disposal?”   A Little More About Our Guest   Henry Ammar, founder and CEO of MakeItHappen.Life, is an award-winning empowerment coach, an impact entrepreneur, a creative, and a visionary leader with in-depth experience in the personal development, business leadership, entertainment, real estate, and education industries. Alisa Vitti is functional nutritionist, women’s hormone expert, best-selling author, and founder of FloLiving.com. She’s also known as the hormone whisperer. Alisa has opened up the conversation about menstruation while helping and inspiring women to tap into their inner wisdom and thrive all month long.   I’m so excited to share this conversation with you. This is something that we as women don’t talk about enough. I learned so much from Alisa about myself and my body. Yes, we talked about periods. I never realized how much information there is out there to help us understand our bodies more until this conversation.   Alisa has so many tips for us on using the tools around us to feel our best. She shares her journey of working through hormone issues herself, how our food screws our endocrine function, and how we can live our optimal health by understanding our hormones.   Radically FLO Alisa   Seeing a major gap in healthcare for hormone issues and searching for answers Getting diagnosed with PCOS at a young age and healing herself Making TV history by simulating menstrual blood on Dr. Oz   Radically Inspired Clarity   Your food has to change each week of your cycle because your hormones are changing. Understand what’s going on in your hormones is the fastest way for you to be free.   Alisa Vitti Answers…   What kind of tests can we ask our doctor for to understand our bodies better? What can we do to start owning our female health? What are your thoughts on IUD and similar birth control methods?   Radically Loved Quotes   “If you’re walking around with the belief that you should be eating the ‘perfect diet’ every single day, you are greatly misled. All dietary theory is predicated on the male hormonal pattern.”   “If you want to stifle the creative power of half the population, you do that by not giving them the roadmap to optimizing their health.”   “There is no destination with health. There is a constant evolution. You need to be in a dynamic, compassionate relationship with your body throughout your life.”   “None of those diets or exercise programs are predicated on female biology. You must sync with your cycle to be your healthiest self”   A Little More About Our Guest   Alisa built FLO Living as a virtual online health center to help women solve their hormonal symptoms from anywhere in the world. She published a book called WomanCode, which has been in the Top 50 best selling women’s health books of all time since it was published. The two universal laws of impermanence are uncertainty and unpredictability. When life changes unexpectedly, we can often feel off balance, insecure, and unclear of what really matters and/or what to do next. This is normal. What can support us to reclaim our life and tap into our internal wisdom is re-asserting our strength of mind and heart. Mindfulness and compassion are two important qualities that increase our resilience. At this pivotal time in our world, we need to cultivate both. Compassion in action has the ability to heal and transform oneself and thus the world into a place that takes the welfare of all beings into consideration. How do I give away my power? When I listen to the critical and judgmental thoughts that disempower my worth, potential, and abilities. When I am going too fast. When I say yes, when I really mean no, or not yet. When I don’t listen to my feelings and needs. When I don’t stick up for myself and share my feelings and needs with others. When I am not taking good care of myself with exercise, meditation, nutrition, connection, sleep, self-care, etc. How do I feel empowered? When I slow down. When I ask for support. When I really listen and then take care and support my feelings and needs in action. When I share my truth in a kind and skillful way. When I claim my inherent good worth, kindness, and competence in the world. When I surround myself with people who love and accept me for me. When I spend time in nature. When I engage in healthy practices that nourish my mind, body, and heart like exercise, sleep, healthy food, connection, play, learning, and meditation. When I feel engaged in a community or group with a shared goal or intention. When I feel on purpose in my life. When I am creating. When I am helping others.

If you, too, have struggled with a toxic relationship, I hope this little instruction manual will help you. 1. Knowledge that you are in a difficult situation.. Your choices here are fairly limited, and, strangely, acceptance is always the best choice. You can judge and criticize the other person, but that will probably make you feel tense and lonely. Alternately, you could nurse your anxiety and despair that you’ll never be able to get along with them, which will make you feel stressed and sad. You can definitely deny their existence or pretend that they aren’t bothering you. You can block their texts and emails, and avoid every situation where they’ll turn up. These are all tactics of resistance, and they won’t protect you. Ironically, these tactics will allow the other person to further embed themselves into your psyche. What does work is to accept that your relationship with them is super hard, and also that you are trying to make it less hard. This gentle acceptance does not mean that you are resigned to a life of misery, or that the situation will never get better. Maybe it will—and maybe it won’t. Accepting the reality of a difficult relationship allows us to soften. And this softening will open the door to your own compassion and wisdom.   Trust me: You are going to need those things.   2. The Person will Blame you for their Emotions  This is not true. You are not responsible for their emotions. You never have been, and you never will be. Don’t take responsibility for their suffering; if you do, they will never have the opportunity to take responsibility for themselves.

Layla Fanucci is an artist and entrepreneur, renowned for her signature style of cityscape paintings. She exhibits her work at a number of impressive galleries and museums around the world, including The Louvre in Paris.   When Layla discovered her true calling, it was the only drive she needed to propel her forward in her career. Her success story was so pivotal to me and my journey. I’ve spoken with her daughter, Michelle Fanucci, on the podcast before and talked about how Layla’s story inspired me to make a huge change in my life.   In this episode, we talk about how Layla got to where she is today, her keys to success, and learning what our true calling is. This has been one of my favorite interviews, enjoy!     Radically Purposeful Layla   Nurturing her artistry and dedicating herself to painting 200 paintings in 2 years Figuring out how to make art a business by focusing on each 50/50 Setting a goal to make as much as she did teaching or go back to her job   Radically Inspired Clarity   You have to focus on the one thing you love to make it happen. It takes devotion in order to succeed in your passion. You don’t have just one talent. In 10 years you might find another and nurture that. Later, you might find another. Nurture what you love and it will grow. Be very clear about what you really love to do. Being clear on that is the biggest step because then you can take steps to make it happen.   Layla’s Keys for Success   1) Find your passion 2) Have a plan 3) Work really hard 4) Focus on your goals 5) Give back    Layla Fanucci Answers…   How can you be an artist and be good at business? What if I don’t have anything I love to do? What’s the best advice you can give about following a passion?   Radically Loved Quotes   “When you follow your passion and you work really hard, the money follows.”   “Really dedicate your time to what you love to do. Your passion is nurtured and then you can climb up that ladder.”   “If you don’t believe in it, it’s probably not going to go far.”   “You can do anything, but no one’s going to give it to you. You’ve got to make it happen.”   A Little More About Our Guest   Driven by a desire to evoke her experience of the city, she achieves remarkable harmony in these resonant works. A musician before becoming a painter, she captures the rhythm of the great metropolis, the lyrical splendor of its skies and the cacophony of its streets. Looking at the scenes, one understands why people return time after time to theses places, like musical phrases we never tire of hearing, always finding something new in them. In Fanucci's dream like paintings, the relationships of building, massed like blocks, transmit the grandeur and intensity of the urban environment, framing the crowds that swarm below them. Dense, deeply felt, intriguing and masterfully painted, her cityscapes draw us in because of the passion in which they were created. www.laylafanucci.com/

On this episode, he shares how we can each find our own zone of genius, what we can do to master our potential, and how to improve our relationships with others.     Radically Conscious Gay   Creating The Big Leap, the ‘bible of coaching and self-development’ Discovering the connection between the body and our potential Accessing creative power by removing criticism and blame   Radically Inspired Clarity   The most important question to ask yourself to find your zone of genius is, what do I most love to do? You have to be on a quest for who you truly are. Whatever time you spend putting on a facade is time you’re getting off track with who you really are.   Gay Hendricks Answers…   Do we have only one encompassing upper limit problem or do they change overtime? How is the authenticity of our relationships changing with digital media? What is the difference between settling or compromise?   Radically Loved Quotes   “No matter who you are, you have a zone of genius in you and once you tap into that, it makes your success come alive.”   “Many people are in pain because they aren’t expressing their full potential.”   “In a relationship, you need to learn how to express the truth about how you’re feeling.”   “Get out of the energy of the negative and put that energy in what you really want and how can I make that happen in a creative way.”   A Little More About Our Guest   Gay has offered seminars worldwide including OPRAH, CNN, CNBC, 48 HOURS and others. Broaden Your Peripheral Vision: Years ago, while working as a personal assistant to a Celebrity I was often so troubled at the fact that I spent so much of my time worrying about things that were out of my control because I wanted to be the BEST at my job until I finally burnt myself out. I blamed it on the hours and my desire to want to finish my degree and would often become so resentful at the fact that I wasn’t doing what I wanted to do. I did end up quitting, but in hindsight I wish that I had instead just taken some time off. Sometimes that’s all we need, just a little bit of time to reflect, a little bit of space and then maybe flush things out from a place of less constraint. I would say if your feeling locked in, let yourself take that vacation time, or even just a home retreat so that you can give your body and mind some time to look at the big picture. Happiness Isn’t Out There, It’s already In HERE: When was the last time you were happy? Now, when was the last time you were happy at Work? What would you love to be doing with your time and your life RIGHT NOW? If the answer looks completely contrary to what you are doing right now that’s totally fine, but it might. If you’re having a hard time picturing what you want to do or what you would “like” to do when you grow up, think about what you don’t want to do. This may be a small clue in the puzzle of what is really going on. Ask and You Shall Receive: Once I finally got the courage to quit my job, I realized all of sudden I had no problem expressing why I was feeling the way I was. “Why do we wait until that very last day to tell the truth? It’s like when we argue with a partner, when we are in it all of a sudden the shit that ‘kind of’ bothered you last week because the straw that breaks the camels back! Many people assume their bosses know what they want and are ignoring them, but it’s just as likely that everyone’s caught up in their own little worlds. I have found this to be true more often then not. Often time the thigns that lead to a break are things that had never been brought up in the relationship to begin with. If you happen to be in this position, consider saying something. Suggest a new project that you want to work on or more money, a different schedule, a vacation? If the alternative here is to quit, what do you have to lose? You Have To Do The Work: Sometimes finding what truly drives you or what you want to do in life is a moving target. The constant change of our own nature can sometimes add to this stress of trying to find the “ONE” thing that’s going to fix all of our problems and make us so happy to wake up every morning. Do you think the guy that has to clear out the sewage pipes when they get clogged up wakes up every morning and can’t wait to clean out shit? No, (well at least my friend who actually has this job doesn’t) but he does love the fact that he can provide for his 3 kids and help take care of his father. That wakes him up in the best mood, and he can just go on his marry way and do what he needs to do. Our job in life doesn’t “just” require us to “show up” we HAVE to do the work. Stop using excuses to why you “can’t” and start thinking about all the ways YOU CAN, any thread of small effort.. is STILL EFFORT. Change Only Happens when there is Change: This can often really be the only thing that stands in the way between us and our happiness and contentment in what we do. Change what you can, mostly.. what you have control over. The first on that list would be… your ATTITUDE. Let’s just look at the situation for a moment, most of you reading this, if you are relating to what I’m saying here, can relate to the fact that your in the situation your in… because you put yourself there. So get into it… Rishi Tea Giveway:  Rishi Matcha Essetials Giveaway on “Radically Loved Radio” iTunes Top Rated Yoga + Health Podcast!  If your negative thoughts are hurting your outlook, here are some positivity-grabbing tips to consider: Be a detective. Consider the evidence. For instance, if you interviewed for a job and are certain you failed at your first impression, consider the evidence. Were you polite, on time, and presentable? Were you informative and appropriate? Did your skill set seem to match what they were looking for? If so, congratulations. You interviewed well and it is now in someone else’s hands. Allowing negativity to run rampant is not helping, and it won’t prepare you for a second interview. Consider alternatives. You’ve interviewed and they haven’t responded yet. Consider the possibilities: they are still interviewing candidates, they are awaiting approval to hire you, they are never going to call you because your interview was awful, and they may call tomorrow. Each possibility has its own voice and perspective, some negative and some positive. Learning to articulate alternatives helps to mold possible positive thoughts. Let it go. Negative thoughts are just thoughts; they can come and go. Positivity is a choice. What if you itemized all of your negative thoughts on a piece of paper and then burned the paper? What would be left in your mind? Perhaps the space negativity leaves behind can allow positivity to creep in and settle.   Having strong relationships is one of the predicators of wellness, happiness, and longevity. And our connections flourish when we take time to get to know ourselves, and others, better. Here are three ways to strengthen the relationships you have, and nourish the ones that might need some work: 1) Be kind Kindness is like a magnet. People like to be around others who are kind because they feel cared about and safe with them. The age-old Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would want them to do to you” still rings true today. It’s also reciprocal. When we practice being kind not only do we feel better, but we help others feel good, too. And this just increases opportunities for positive connections throughout our day, which, in turn, contributes to our own health and well-being. 2) Identify Nourishing (and Depleting) Relationships Take an inventory of your relationships to a get a sense for who’s nourishing you and who’s depleting you. See if you can spend more time with the nourishing people make stronger connections there. Try to spend a little less time with those who deplete you. This isn’t always possible, of course (ie: family members, coworkers, etc.), so in those cases, see if you can change your relationship a little bit by recognizing that those people may be dealing with some instability in their lives. Practice sending them some kind intentions reference Love + Kindness Meditation and see what comes up: “May they be happy, may they be healthy, may they feel safe, may they be balanced.” 3) Practice “Just like me” DNA research has revealed that regardless of gender, ethnicity, or race, humans are 99.9% the same.  As you go through your day and encounter someone who you think is different from you, silently say, “Just like me,” and see what you notice. You may just experience the awareness that each of us wants the same things: to feel cared for and understood, and to experience a sense of belonging.

It’s easy to be kind to others, but you have to love yourself too. You can’t give it outward until you can inward. There are no superfluous people in the world. If you’re here, there’s something only you can do. Kindness is small shifts. Get inspired and make a small shift. Then, you can take ownership of kindness in your life.   Orly Wahba Answers…   How can we begin to overcome our fear of feeling like we don’t matter? What are you looking forward to in the coming months? How do you feel radically loved? What to do in the heat of the moment , When passive aggression emerges in the middle of a conflict, here are seven steps to take. 1. Chill out. Attempting to begin a dialogue when one or both of you are in a very negative head space will cause the person who behaves passive-aggressively to shut down or to escalate the situation. Take a minute to chill out and calm down before approaching each other and the issue 2. Talk it out. Don’t try to guess or assume you know what your partner is feeling or thinking. Instead, ask your partner how he or she feels. 3. Brainstorm. The work of being in a successful relationship takes two people. As often as possible, come up with ideas for solutions to your issues together. Make your list of options as long and as wide-ranging as possible. 4. List pros and cons. Once you’ve finished brainstorming a list of possible solutions, talk through the pros and cons of each idea on the list. 5. Win-win. The best solution is the one where both of you win the most and lose the least. 6. Execute the plan. Take your win-win solution and execute it. It may take some time to see if it works. Make a plan in advance for when you’ll come back to evaluate. 7. Evaluate. Did your solution work? If not, try one of the other solutions on your list for another trial period.

1. It’s your brain.  Bad Habits is simply what our brains do. They’re designed to create neural pathways that provide the best results. So, when a desire triggers a reaction that in turn satisfies that initial urge, the brain takes note. The next time that desire arises, the brain calls up the circuitry that got the job done before. When an urge is satisfied—whether for soothing, attention, or any other response—we experience a rush of dopamine, the neurochemical associated with feeling good. After a few blasts of dopamine, we start to crave more, which then drives us to indulge in the triggering behavior, be it eating fast food, checking your phone, or lighting up a cigarette. Voila! You have a habit.   2. Will, want, won’t Recognizing bad habits —the trigger, the impulse, the brain’s learned way to satisfy that need—is just part of the process of unwinding them. There also needs to be an intention to do things differently, tied to something that deeply matters to you.   3. Remember HALT When you get clear on your want—the deeply personal reason for wanting to make a habit change (hint: “I should” isn’t one of them)—then begins the work of strengthening your ability to choose differently (aka, willpower). But as anyone who has tried to diet or commit to exercise knows, saboteurs to our will abound. This is when psychologist Christopher Willard recommends employing the acronym HALT. Hungry, Angry/Anxious, Lonely, Tired   4. Try compassion - Research shows that when we criticize ourselves, it actually short-circuits the brainpower we need to unwind old habits and adopt new ones. Criticism (self or external) causes the same fight-or-flight impulse, limiting access to the higher functions of the brain, like being able to see the bigger picture, explains life coach and mindfulness instructor Carley Hauck. “Criticism makes us feel more anxious, more depressed, and more afraid of failure.” If you regularly tell yourself you “can’t” or that you’re not enough in some way, try using a more compassionate and understanding tone instead. Once we can be compassionate in our thinking, we can figure out the next best step to take toward the change we want.    5. See it, and believe it- Mindfulness helps build the ability to resist giving in to urges that foster unhealthy habits. Visualize the circumstances that typically trigger an urge. Notice what thoughts and feelings arise in the body. See if you can identify where you feel that urge physically, but don’t engage it. Instead, relax the body and tune in to your breathing, in and out.

1) Name it to tame it. Instead of denying that you’re afraid, look fear in the face. Give it a name. For me: Fear of not being or doing enough.   2) Comfort yourself. Start by exhaling deeply, which is the key to calming the nervous system.   3) Take a baby step. Break the behavior you are avoiding doing into an action step so small that it no longer feels worth resisting. I’m going to go meditate for three minutes. I know I have three minutes, and that doesn’t feel so scary, after all.
