Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hello Friends, I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

This week on the #RadicallyLovedPodcast, Rosie and Whitney talk about understanding and overcoming toxic positivity.
Toxic positivity is not positivity at all. Presenting a false smile while suffering can hurt you. People would prefer to put on a happy facade than deal with the situation, but setting aside or swallowing feelings and forcefully projecting positivity leads to more unhappiness. In this episode, Rosie and Whitney delve into the causes of toxic positivity and the importance of dealing with our negative emotions.

In this episode of Radically Loved, Rosie and Ian introduce the nine Enneagram personality types.

Pages by pages, chapter by chapter — we write a story that aligns with our past memories and scars. As we brave through our life experiences, it frames a sense of who we are as people. We are fortunate if life seems to sail through smoothly, leaving us with a great understanding of who we are. But have you ever wondered — what if you're living the wrong story? How can you break free from the worn-out script you have been telling yourself all your life?

A successful relationship needs both partners to build trust and validate the other. So if one partner doesn’t feel respected or loved, the relationship will inevitably fall apart.
One way couples unintentionally ignore the feelings of their significant other is through invalidation.

By belittling the emotions of our loved ones, we are indirectly saying that we don’t value them. How can we avoid falling into this pitfall? Unfortunately, there’s no precise answer to this. But we can always start with the basics—build trust and offer genuine apologies and heartfelt consideration to our loved ones.

In this episode, Matthew Fray joins us to share the lessons he learned about failed relationships and divorce. He explains why invalidation destroys trust and security in a relationship and how genuine apologies help build trust toward a healthy marriage. Finally, he imparts how couples could respond better to feelings of invalidation expressed by their partners.
If you're searching for how to build trust, create emotional safety, and be a better partner, this episode is for you!

1.Understand why relationships fail.
2.Discover the importance of a genuine apology.

Episode Highlights
Matthew Ten Years Ago
●Matthew believed he was a decent person and a good partner.
●When we are unaware of hurting others, it diminishes our responsibility to the consequences of our actions.
●Today, Matthew understands the gravity of his actions to his loved ones.
●A person’s happiness sometimes depends on the awareness and validation of their significant other to their experiences.
Why Relationships Fail
●Failure to do simple and small tasks for your partner shows indifference to their feelings.
●Relationships end when someone’s feelings are hurt or ignored.
●Someone might not feel safe in their relationship.
●Someone with a healthy set of boundaries will voluntarily leave a harmful relationship.
●Paying attention to the small things creates a lasting relationship.
On Keeping a Relationship
●Couples break up because of the absence of trust and safety in their relationship.
●Deep wounds are carved into someone’s heart when they’re unloved and disrespected by their significant other.
On Saving Relationships
●There is a limit to how much betrayal and pain someone can take.
●Promising to care and love someone is irrelevant when you inflict pain on them.
●Demonstrating love through actions is just lip service. Couples need to learn how to build trust, safety, and respect.
Habits to a Healthier Relationship
●Validation and consideration are two habits needed to maintain a happy relationship.
●Validate your partner’s feelings. When we disregard our loved one’s emotions, their trust slowly slips away.
●Be mindful of the person with whom you share space.
The Invalidation Triple Threat
●There are three distinct ways to invalidate our partners: gaslighting, understatement, and defensiveness.
●Gaslighting happens when we discredit and correct the emotions felt by our significant other.
●Understatement means considering our partner's feelings as an overreaction.
●Defensiveness is defending your harmful actions and implies you would do them again.
●Invalidation breeds mistrust. Listen to the full episode to hear how Matthew’s marriage ended because of discrediting this wife’s feelings.
Towards a Better Response
●Acknowledge your fault when you unintentionally hurt others.
●Understand how a seemingly trivial accident resulted in pain.
●Learn to accept the emotional needs and wants of your better half.
The Importance of Apology
●Take responsibility for your offending behavior and be genuinely sorry for hurting the person you love.
●There are four steps to an effective apology. Listen to the whole episode to know more about it!
●The cornerstone habits of a successful relationship are communication, validation, love, support, and care.

This week on Wisdom Wednesdays, Rosie and Katie talk about the importance of embracing the changes in your life.

We get different reactions whenever we look at old photos of ourselves. Some of us feel nostalgic, some feel embarrassed, and some are even in disbelief. It could be the old hairstyle, fashion choices, or even the way we posed for those pictures — all these remind us of our humble beginnings.

They also remind us how things have changed. As many years passed, you’ve now embodied not just a different appearance but also varying views, opinions, and principles. As we go through new experiences every day, how can we fully embrace these changes?

Life is full of hardships and struggles. Often, we fall for the trap of negative energy when things go amiss. We dive deeper and deeper into this rabbit hole of negativity until it’s all we can see. Then, she elaborates on the role of self-awareness and self-actualization in controlling our emotions, desires, and actions. Do you frequently work late at night? Do you like to party with your buddies till morning? Or do you have a child that always keeps you up? If yes, there's a high chance that you don't get enough sleep.

Hustle culture tells us that sleep is for the weak. But, on the contrary, sleep is essential. Sleep and mental health are inextricably connected. Unfortunately, due to work, family, and other responsibilities, many of us do not get the needed seven or eight hours of sleep. It's all too easy to get into the habit of drinking another cup of coffee to get us through the day. However, by doing this, we are also sacrificing our physical and mental health.

We've all had adverse experiences that have shaped who we are in the present. Like mud in a vessel, they are hard to remove and scrape off. They block our sight and steer us in the wrong directions. Sadly, not many people are able to carry out the journey towards healing intentionally. But spiritual transformation takes time and conscious effort, and it starts by looking inwards. Once you do, you'll start seeing the light once blocked in your vessel.
In this episode, Ryan Blair, serial entrepreneur and CEO of AlterCal, joins us to talk about his journey to cultivating his resilience and spirituality. Ryan shares the internal work that led him to the path he walks today. He delves into the concept of removing the mud in the vessel in his spiritual work. Ryan also discusses the spiritual warfare he went through and how it has transformed him. Finally, he shares a miracle he witnessed with his son upon going through spiritual work.

Human creativity and advanced technology have allowed beauty trends to perpetually shift throughout the years. However, existing societal conventions have continued to bind us to unrealistic, one-dimensional beauty standards.

As we struggle to maintain society’s expectations, we must realize that physical appearance is just the tip of the iceberg of a more complex concept of beauty. When you examine deeper, you will understand that real beauty is found deep within, and you can only unravel it once you foster confidence and self-acceptance.

In this episode, Naked Beauty Podcast's host Brooke DeVard Ozaydinli joins us to delve into the world of beauty. She talks about the experience that inspired her to create her own beauty platform and what it's like to run a podcast. Brooke also shares tips on how to handle other people on social media. Finally, we dive deep into the concept of internal and external beauty and why beauty is something subjective.

●Brooke has two Instagram accounts. One is her personal account for pure fun (@brookedevard); the other is for her beauty community (@nakedbeautyplanet).

●Hearing from people with different and diverse experiences from yours can help you create more empathetic content.
[28:57] Internal Beauty vs. External Beauty
●Brooke thinks you cannot have one without the other.
●People that radiate beauty have an inner peace around them.
●People who are physically attractive but are unkind don't have the factor that draws you to them.
●Having confidence in how you hold yourself and interact with other people is what makes you a beautiful person.
[31:04] Cosmetic Procedures as an Approach to Beauty
●While Brooke has chosen not to have Botox or fillers, she’s not against them.
●We live in a society where we’re constantly trying to reverse the clock. However, true beauty has nothing to do with that.
●If it makes them feel better, there's no judgment for those who choose to change or enhance their features.
●Still, some people can lose sight of the compass of where they really want to be from getting procedures constantly done.
[37:48] On Pretty Privilege
●Some people have the privilege of having a symmetrical face and conventionally attractive features.
●These people are naturally very beautiful without doing anything.
●Not welcoming the idea of cosmetic procedures may come from a place of privilege a lot of people don’t have.
●It goes back to listening to feedback and learning to be sensitive.
[38:53] Beauty and Attraction are Subjective
●Beauty is personal.
●Rosie and Brooke look up to women that have embraced their age. Brooke gave the character of Carrie Bradshaw as an example.
●What attracts many of us is a person's personality instead of physical appearance.
●Attraction has so little to do with physical perfection. There’s an unspoken thing you can feel that makes you drawn to a person.
[43:53] On Self-Acceptance
●Brooke’s husband is very accepting of who she is.
●"When do you feel most beautiful?" is a question that has been asked in every episode of the Naked Beauty Podcast. People’s answers to the question rarely have to do with their physical appearance.
●Brooke is able to give herself the grace of self-acceptance. But it can be easy to forget this sometimes.
●Your perception of what’s beautiful should not be dictated by what other people think.
●Brooke feels radically loved when she’s given the space to be her authentic self — to show her naked beauty.
5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[03:23] “There are choices being made that reflect your personality, which I think is so interesting—beauty is this way of talking without talking.”
[05:17] If you take ten women in a white t-shirt and jeans, there are still going to be things about them that make them stand out and make them unique—in terms of the way they choose to do their hair, in terms of the way they choose to do their makeup, the way that they choose to accessorize, even the way that they carry themselves, to be quite honest.”
[28:20] “Sometimes, when you hear from people that have different experiences from yours and diverse experiences from yours, it really helps to make your content more empathetic.”
[30:17] “It's not just about making sure you have the perfect skincare routine; it's making sure you have that confidence [in] the way that you hold yourself as you walk into the room, the way that you are interacting with other people—all of that comes together to make you a beautiful person.”
[43:22] “Attraction has so little to do with physical perfection.”

Episode Highlights
Alyson’s Journey with Animals
●Before writing the book, Alyson went through deep initiations and incredible medicinal challenges.
●She shares that her shamanic path is all about integrity and embodiment. Alyson did not plan on becoming a shaman, her spiritual journey started as a way to heal herself.
●It was only through working with shamans that she found her calling. Through that experience, she also understood that her core power animal is the black jaguar.
●She also had three supporter power animals: the bear, deer, and frog.
●Frogs taught her to leap forward while the deer led her to her now-husband. Find out more about Alyson’s journey with animals in the full episode!
What’s My Totem Animal?
●Every animal represents different healing traits and wisdom teachings.
●Animals will manifest themselves into your life based on your struggles and what you need the most.
●If you’re wondering: “What’s My Totem Animal?” Alyson recommends going into a shamanic journey with a trusted shaman who can help you meet your core animal.
●It's not just the animals’ job to show up and help. You also need to be mindful of them and lean into their teachings.
●You can also call on animals for help during specific situations. Find out how by listening to the episode!
What Your Totem Animal Can Feel Like
●Rosie figured out the answer to “What’s My Totem Animal?” earlier in her life. She shares this story in Alyson’s book.
●When she was growing up, seeing a dragonfly get hurt made her feel physical pain too.
●Since that moment, dragonflies always remind Rosie of resilience.
●The dragonfly also represents adaptability, mysticism, magic, the element of water, ease, grace, and truth.
The Whale and Shadow Work
●The whale has been showing up for Alyson lately. This animal represents facing your blindspots and doing shadow work.
●There’s a lot of disruption and chaos happening all around the world and we need to face ourselves and do the work needed to grow.
●Facing our shadows can be intimidating, but the whale is there to be a loving guide to face our darkest selves.
Alyson’s Recommended Animals to Everyone
●She suggests for everyone to work with bird medicine.
●For one, the seagull is all about cleaning up trash and unnecessary things.
●Meanwhile, the owl represents awakening and getting out of delusion.
Why It’s Important to do Shadow Work
●Being a shaman, or embodied teacher, is not about being perfect. We are all human beings.
●There will always be lessons and experiences we can evolve from.
●It’s important to do integrity checks, where you investigate whether you’re in a blind spot or not.
●Facing uncomfortable and terrifying things is also crucial because that’s how you’ll understand the truth of who you are.
●If you don’t do shadow work, you will bring messy energy into your interactions, even though you have the best intentions at heart.
Becoming Open to Guidance
●We can experience pain-body as a result of traumatic experiences. You may find yourself in a cycle of suffering or reacting in an elevated or exaggerated manner.
●Don’t beat yourself up when this happens and instead become more aware of your thoughts and actions. Reflect on whether you may have traumas under the surface.
●If you have friends who have done the shadow work themselves, you can open yourself up to them and ask for their perspectives and insights.
●You have the power to change anything at any time. There may be stories you’re telling about yourself that may simply not be true.
●Be open to spiritual guidance.
Insights and Applications Go Hand-In-Hand
●Many people attend healing ceremonies, but often don’t change after the session.
●Plant medicines are generously helping to amplify your healing, and it’s your duty to change your life based on the information you perceived.
●Ask yourself: “How can I implement this change in my life?”
How Alyson Feels Radically Loved
●Alyson used to define success from external measures, like achieving in sports and media.
●However, she has found that success is defined by her ability to share unconditional love with others.

Episode Highlights
[00:45] Learning Something New
●Eddie is Rosie’s childhood friend that’s like a brother to her.
●Since he’s the lead singer of a hardcore metal band called King, Rosie and Torry asked him to give them singing lessons because they’re into karaoke right now.
●Rosie’s dad is an incredible singer but singing doesn’t come naturally to her.
●While some people have innate talents, practicing and honing your skills will help you get better at anything you’re passionate about.
[03:44] How to Handle Mistakes
●When microaggressions happen, she noticed she tends to blame herself immediately, then become defensive and blame someone else.
●She realized that she blames others because of fear and feeling unworthy.
●Instead of blaming others, respond with healthy mindsets and efficient solutions.
●Everyone becomes worried and anxious when they make a mistake, but pausing before reacting will help you handle things better.
[09:29] The Letting Go Process
●With the book launch, Rosie is juggling a lot but she also wants to enjoy the process.
●Once anything you create is sent out to the world, it belongs to the audience who’ll take what you’ve done and interpret it with their own lens.
●Each person will perceive things differently.
●The writing process is intimate and vulnerable, so the letting go process can be difficult.
[12:33] Resonating with Radically Loved
●Rosie did three interviews yesterday, and all three people had read the book.
●One of her favorite things in this experience has been seeing people resonate with the idea of being radically loved.
●Though she thinks it isn’t notable, many people were really into her childhood story.
●Learning yoga as a philosophy before she did the asana practice was also something people found fascinating.
●She hasn’t talked about relationships being our ultimate way to our spiritual path yet.
[17:20] How Wisdom Wednesdays Started
●They had a bump in listeners since they became an iHeart Radio podcast.
●Tessa has known Rosie for a long time, being one of her students and an incredibly gifted yoga teacher, coach, and author.
●Wisdom Wednesdays started out as an experiment but now they enjoy just hanging out.
[18:40] The Three Things You Need For a Spiritual Quest
●You must be willing to inquire within.
●Accept that some things happen for no reason.
●Find someone to guide you.
●Spirituality happens when you mind your own business.
●Living in an authentic, heart-centered way has always been the crux of who she wants to be as a person and as a teacher, and the foundation for everything she does.
[22:17] Being Grounded
●Perhaps Rosie created a container where she can foster and grow.
●The value of their yoga training is in the stillness and being able to sit with ease and feel everything resonate within them.
●Surround yourself with people who are open and want to learn.
●Remember that the practice is the path, and the path is the practice.
[25:54] Where the Path Leads
●Finding people that will guide you can transform your life.
●Being a perpetual student, Rosie always wants to learn new things and integrate them.
●The practice isn’t done to get better at something or reach a goal; it’s to learn how to be on the path, let go, and open our hearts to the present.
●The place that we’re trying to get to is here, and we’re already here.
[28:51] Dealing with Anxiety and Stillness
●In order for something to stand the test of time, it’s going to take time.
●People tend to become impatient and rush because they need to get “there” when “here” is where you really need to be.
●Anxiety comes from living in the future or dwelling in the past.
●Living in a frenetic environment makes it difficult for us to be still and steady.
●Being still gives space for the things that we really want, so think deeply about what you want and how it can make you feel fulfilled.
[34:08] Reconciling Contentment and Desire
●Tessa remembers mulling over with some students, “How do I remain content with what I have while also progressing as a human and reaching my goals?”
●Until now, she still grapples with contentment and striving towards goals.
●It’s okay to have desires, but discernment is important so you don’t feel less than.
5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[02:42] “If you’re passionate about something, and you just keep practicing and in practicing at it, you will at some point at least get decent enough.”
[20:34] “Here’s the thing about spirituality. It doesn’t happen when you’re looking at somebody else’s life. It happens when you MYOB: Mind Your Own Business.”
[25:23] “It’s important to surround yourself with people who are open and have a desire to learn and to realize that the practice is the path and the path is the practice.”
[28:16] “... the place we’re trying to get to is here. And we’re already here. That’s where the path leads us. It’s not leading us to some elusive place out there, somewhere that is impossible to get to.”
[29:49] “In order for something to stand the test of time, it's going to take time.”
[37:10] “You have these desires [...] but it’s not going to change your belief about yourself and it's not going to change how you feel about yourself. There’s a difference. The minute that it does and you feel less than, then at that point, it’s back to the drawing board.”

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[07:58] “You know, success implies a singular destination. What [our life] looking for is [its] continued growth. What it’s looking for is a deeper sense of meaning, a deeper sense of contribution, a deeper sense of alignment, a deeper sense of connection.”
[15:46] “When something, even if it’s painful, gives us a sense of fulfillment and a sense of meaning, the pain becomes impermanent and the fulfillment stays with us.”
[19:22] “Those who have experienced [grief] know, it sort of has a mind of its own. It normally comes at the most inconvenient times.”
[21:48] “There is another way to relate to [fear and other uncomfortable feelings]. And that’s by inviting them in. And while it feels like the complete opposite of my instincts, it’s actually the action that feels the most soothing and relieving.”
[25:14] “What that tension is saying to you is that there’s a version of you that is capable of more; of more meaning, more contribution, more joy. The tension of who you are today and who you know deep down you can be next month [or] next year. That tension is actually the seed of change.”

Episode Highlights
Rosie’s Creative Driving Force
●Rosie was branded "the girlfriend" during her first few years with Torry.
●Rosie is intrinsically a strong woman; she spread her wings and paved her way toward her purpose.
Rosie’s Book Writing Process
●Rosie has always been fond of writing since she was a child. To her, writing is one of the most exciting forms of expression.
●To prepare herself, she puts herself into the mindset of “done is better than good" and releases her desire for perfection.
●Writing a book may look easy — it's just adding words and connecting phrases, but the process is much more complex.
●Rosie found it challenging to write cohesively and concisely.
The “Aha!” Moment
●Rosie had stored so many thoughts and ideas in her head for a long time.
●Rosie wanted to turn these ideas into something to help, contribute, and make a difference to the world.
●In her pursuit of purpose, she realized that she wanted to create the book she needed.
The Rough Road To Getting Published
●Rosie's psychic encouraged her to express her ideas in a book.
●She researched how to pitch herself to publishers.
●Reality hit her when her prospective publishers seemed uninterested with her first draft of a book proposal.
●With the help of a publisher, Rosie created a proper book proposal.
Getting Through Roadblocks: Torry’s Side
●Considering that he did not attend design school, Torry shares how his lack of knowledge inspired him to be an artistic designer.
●However, he admits to encountering roadblocks along the way that made him question his worth.
●Torry either powered through these difficulties or just let them be. For the latter, he believes that anyone can reignite their spark.
●Roadblocks can appear in the creative process.
●To keep his interest in Red Monkeys Design from waning, Torry expanded into other fields.
Getting Through Roadblocks: JD’s Side
●Like Rosie, JD also wanted to turn his ideas into a book. However, he had a hard time placing his rapid-fire thoughts onto paper.
●As JD struggled typing the words, he thought of a more unconventional way of deciphering his ideas — through audio-recording.
●Rather than insisting on the traditional creative process, focus on finding a way that works for you.
●People tend to look at the process in binary, but you should also consider what lies in the middle.
●JD connects his creative struggles to his more personal grapple. Listen to the full episode to learn how JD relates fatherhood to the creative roadblocks.
An Itch To Scratch
●Rosie refers to her book as an “itch to scratch." She would have regretted not creating and publishing her book.
●Now that her book is up on pre-sale, she feels complete and fulfilled.
●Rosie's book is perfect for anyone looking to learn more about themselves and go on a journey.
Feeling Radically Loved
●JD has been feeling radically loved in the recent weeks — by himself. He has taken this time to practice more self-love.
●Torry has also been feeling radically loved through his dog, Lucy, who has been his comfort throughout the podcast.
5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[09:20] JD Cargill: "Some people can be creative, and it's just in their head. Creative, and they dream, and they dream. But some people are creative that inspires the dream, and the dream takes action because you actually move and do it."
[29:50] JD Cargill: “Who gets to decide what your creative process is? You.”
[30:45] JD Cargill: "To get the creative process going when I feel stumped or lazy or whatever is to distract yourself at first. Once you're distracted by that, you can move one step in the right direction. You will be surprised how it keeps going."
[35:16] Torry: “We’re hustlers in a way that if there’s anything that we really want — if you want those new jeans, new shoes — you’ll find a way to make it happen.”
[43:43] JD Cargill: “In this time and age when we're all trying to fight doubt, fear, and shame, and guilt, we should look at the opportunities to say, ‘I did that, and I’m going to give myself credit for it, and thank you for the universe for letting that part of my life and now let's go do the next thing.’”
