Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hi I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

#WisdomWednesdays: Pressing Pause, Mindful Speaking, and Powerful Ideas for Self-Care

Our ideas for self-care  often consist of getting a relaxing massage, dipping into bubble baths, and splurging on new stuff. This perception makes it seem like self-care is sold in bottles — in bath bombs, in beauty and wellness products, in art materials, and the list goes on. But the highest forms of self-care actually cost nothing and can also extend to your relationships and interactions with others.

In today's episode, Rosie and Tessa discuss self-care practices that will nourish you and your relationship with your loved ones. Fostering good relationships is equally essential to your well-being as pampering yourself every once in a while. Learning how to express yourself kindly, embracing change, and pause and reflection are self-care practices that improve your life overall.

If you want to learn valuable ideas for self-care to nurture yourself and your relationships, then this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn about the “feel, felt, found” technique and how to use it in situations filled with stress and frustration.
  1. Discover the importance of choosing your words and how you say them wisely.
  1. Find out how pressing pause and expressing yourself compassionately are the ultimate practices of self-care.

Resources

Episode Highlights

How to Calm Someone Down

  • Telling someone to calm down usually elicits the opposite response.
  • Be mindful of the language you use with others and yourself.
  • Every time you find the urge to tell someone to calm down or react negatively to being told this line, try using the “feel, felt, found” technique.
  • It’s about what you “feel” the person is feeling at the moment, what you “felt” about it, and what actions you “found” you can both take to assess and solve the situation.
  • Listen to the full episode to find out how the technique worked for Rosie and Torry!

Expressing Yourself with Compassion

  • When you’re frustrated, it’s difficult to respond to situations compassionately.
  • We aggressively react most of the time because of the underlying fear, which may prevent us from acting wisely.
  • For Rosie, one of the ultimate ideas for self-care is expressing yourself fully.
  • Suppressing your feelings due to fear of losing control or exhaustion is harmful because you might develop an unhealthy relationship with self-expression.
  • Acknowledging someone’s feelings immediately diffuses the situation.

The Danger of “But”

  • When you use ”but” in a sentence, you negate everything that came before that.
  • Try changing “but” into a different word, such as “and”.
  • Be a part of the solution, not the problem.
  • Use your words mindfully instead of lashing out at people.

Responding with Empathy

  • When Tessa notices someone getting upset, she tries to respond with empathy and acknowledgment.
  • Try putting yourself in another person’s shoes.
  • It’s easy to simply attack someone for not sharing the same opinions and beliefs, but it’s necessary to work on bettering our relationships to create a ripple effect.
  • Changing the world starts from home. It’s where we learn how to form relationships.

Moving On and Embracing Change

  • Moving forward and not being stuck in the past is one of the best ideas for self-care.
  • Living in the present allows you to create new habits and improve yourself and your relationships.
  • In relationships, don’t use the words “never” and “always”. These trap people in their past selves and creates an obstacle for change.
  • We’re all constantly changing, and accepting change comes with treasuring your people.

Choosing What To Say and How To Say Them

  • Be more conscious of the language and communication style you use with others.
  • Though it might be unintentional, using “never” and “always” can come off as dismissive and judgmental.
  • Also, remember that it’s not always necessarily about what you’re saying, but how you’re saying it. So, pay attention to your body language and non-verbal communication.
  • Choosing to speak mindfully can help you become a better communicator.

Remember to Press Pause

  • Stepping away from a situation can diffuse it and help you calm down.
  • It’s best to do something else to collect yourself and return to a charged conversation at a later time.
  • Not many people realize this, but pausing and reflecting are the greatest acts and ideas for self-care.

Misconceptions About Self-Care

  • Tessa’s friend thinks that self-care is something she has to do.
  • Self-care is somehow commercialized as though it could be bottled up into products.
  • But self-care isn’t something that you can buy; it is something you already are, and you are capable of attaining on your own.

Crucial Ideas for Self-Care

  • It’s essential to be consistent in caring for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you.
  • Build self-care into your day and take a pause.
  • Also, express yourself clearly and compassionately.
  • Remember that being passionate doesn’t give you a pass to express yourself rudely.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[18:41] “One of the ultimate practices of self-care is to be able to express yourself fully, to be able, to tell the truth as best as you can, and to not push it down.”

[22:12] “If we have the capacity to express our anger, we should have the capacity to use our words mindfully and use our words kindly instead of just lashing out at people.

[26:22] “Start now. You can create a new habit every day. Every moment, every second, you have the opportunity to not be that person.”

[26:47] “We are who we are. But we also are who we are going to be.”

[36:18] “Build [self-care] into your day. Take those breaths, take those pauses, have conversations, express yourself in a very clear and concise way that doesn’t involve an aggressive tone.”

How to Heal Trauma Through Movement with Tracy Lynn

There is freedom in moving our bodies. Movement can be a catalyst to better understand your body and yourself. Through moving, you can feel, heal, and express. Whichever modality of movement you choose—yoga, dance, or even martial arts—you can connect with your body and allow yourself to be who you want to be. These can even help you learn how to heal trauma.

In today's episode, Tracy Lynn shares with us her experience with dance, yoga, and movement. She explains how movement has allowed her to gain more freedom, hold more space, and express herself better. She also shares with us the value of permitting ourselves to feel the emotions that come up within us. Doing so allows us to break out of the boundaries set by the systems of capitalism, patriarchy, and perfectionism. Tracy reminds us that we can show up for ourselves through movement and other tools that can help us feel and do better.

Listen to this episode if you want to know more about how to heal trauma  by connecting with your body and self through movement!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Understand why movement can help you connect deeper with yourself.
  2. Learn why movement can teach you how to heal trauma.
  1. Understand the importance of letting go of perfection and allowing yourself to feel different emotions.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Tracy’s History with Movement

  • Movement has always been a part of Tracy’s life. It took time for her to transform it into what she now refers to as ‘an act of self-love.’
  • She shares the pressure she felt and the experience of growing up as a child of Olympic-level swimmers.
  • Tracy says that what she does now is a ritual; it’s a mash-up of different movement styles as a means of healing.

Re-learning to Connect with the Body

  • Tracy used to have zero regard for her body. But after getting sober, Tracy developed a new connection with her body through dance and movement.
  • She used to have an all-or-nothing mentality. After going through extremes, she realized she does not have to settle in one place or live her life in perfection.
  • Healing does not have to be done the way it’s shown on social media; the process is different for everyone.

Showing Up for Yourself

  • Movement can be used as a modality for healing. It can help if you’re looking for a way on how to heal trauma.
  • However, being knowledgeable about what you can do does not make you immune to feeling down.
  • It’s important to create an ecosystem in your life where you can show up for yourself and do the things that make you feel better.

Emotions Amidst the Pandemic

  • The pandemic has left us to collectively feel overwhelmed. Others have also felt a sort of absence.
  • Many have also experienced existential crises because of the pandemic.
  • We should allow ourselves to feel all our feelings and emotions. Otherwise, we may succumb to sickness.

Creating Space for What Matters to You

  • For many, the pandemic has certainly been a catalyst to re-examine and change aspects of their lives.
  • Similarly for Tracy, the pandemic has allowed her to learn how to hold people accountable for the trauma she’s experienced.
  • She was able to create space for the incredible reality she’s experiencing now.
  • Tune in to the podcast to hear more about the experiences and changes Tracy made in her life.

How to Heal Trauma

  • Tracy goes by her gut and intuition once she feels she is no longer in a safe space.
  • Remember that as we look for ways on how to heal trauma, there is no one correct way.
  • Tracy realized she can learn how to heal trauma by trying different means to dig into her untapped feelings and emotions.
  • The past few months have taught Tracy that there’s a lot of freedom in change, and anything and everything is subject to change.

Movement through Yoga

  • Tracy’s favorite thing about being a teacher is watching people unapologetically become themselves.
  • Yoga helps people become healthier, create better coping mechanisms, and gain more trust in themselves.
  • Yoga and movement enabled Tracy to be who she wanted to be.
  • Part of yoga is cultivating discernment to know what to do when you’re not on the safety of your mat or cushion.

Permit Yourself to Mess Up

  • Tracy emphasizes the importance of letting go of perfectionism.
  • Explore the tools that can help you discover more about how your body communicates with you.
  • Doing so helps you gain a deeper understanding of yourself by going beyond the body layer and trappings of the ego.
  • Allow yourself to feel even the uncomfortable.

Reflections on Yoga

  • Tracy notes that yoga is presented differently in the West.
  • She wants people to understand that the yoga and movements she teaches are not hers.
  • These are borrowed movements that she alchemizes in her body and uses to gain more freedom, self, breath, and space.

Committing to the Recovery Process

  • It’s important to embody what you preach and be yourself through the tools that help you align with your highest self.
  • It’s also crucial to constantly practice introspection and reflection.
  • Make an inventory of how, what, and why you’re doing the things you’re doing.
  • Be open to your authentic self.

How Tracy Feels Radically Loved

  • Tracy’s partner reminds her that no matter what she wants to do, she just has to start, to just be, and to just learn in the process.
  • Tracy sees the ultimate act of self-love as accepting herself as she’s doing this.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[07:41] “I can dance between both areas; I can vacillate; I can be here or there; I can fall apart and pick myself back up. And that’s kind of been my most healing transition. It’s realizing that I don’t need to look at [healing] through the lenses of perfection.”

[12:05] “Illness happens in us when we don’t let ourselves feel [or] when we suppress emotion.”

[22:22] “You can change; you can shift. And there’s a lot of freedom in that.”

[23:38] “Doing this yoga or this movement enables me to be who I wanted to be—who I suppressed, who I silenced, who I was afraid of putting out there. Because I honestly feel  like our ultimate motivation for a lot of things is to actually just be connected to people.”

[30:38] “The way that I’ve alchemized [the movements] in my body as a traumatized person, as a person that’s been drug-addicted, as a person that’s been sexually abused and assaulted, and how it helped me just get a little bit freer, and get a little more fucking space, to breathe and be myself. To be the weirdo that I am.”

About Tracy

Tracy Lynn is a teacher, mover, and body explorer. She teaches and performs different styles of movement from modern dancing to martial arts, yoga, and more. For her, movement allows her to feel and connect with herself and with other people. Through the movements she teaches and shares, she hopes others can unapologetically be themselves.

Overcome Your Fear of Taking Risks and Learn to Make Choices with Sukhinder Singh Cassidy

Are you afraid to make choices ? Many of us get wrapped up in the fear that a single decision can make or break our entire lives. Choosing to go to one school over another, or taking a job and turning down an offer—these may seem like the sole determinants of our future. However, success and failure are often an accumulation of decisions and not something that stems from only one choice.

In today's episode, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy joins us to talk about how to bravely own your decisions. Every time we make choices, we also take on some risks. However, you can grow to become more discerning and calculated. Sukhinder also shares how you can change your perspective around making decisions, embracing changes, and recovering from failure. We also talk about seeking truth at work so that you can be your most authentic self.

If you want to stop agonizing about making choices, this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover why you become unable to make choices and how you can begin to act.
  2. Learn the ways you can foster truth-telling at work so you can live as your truest self.
  3. Understand how success is a cycle and an accumulation of choices over time.

Resources

Episode Highlights

The Myth of the Single Choice

  • Sukhinder’s book aims to debunk myths surrounding risk-taking.
  • Society often celebrates big risk-takers, leading many to think that success is all about one big choice.
  • When we put such pressure on a single choice, we become paralyzed and unable to act.
  • The relationship between risk and reward is not linear. It’s not about the first choice; it's about continuing to make choices.
  • Tune in to the full episode to hear Sukhinder’s view on the cyclical journey of making choices.

Change Your Mindset Surrounding Choice

  • We accept that companies need to pivot to become successful. Take, for example, Uber and Amazon.
  • However, we tend to think our careers need to be linear.
  • Our careers can have multiple cycles of change, success, and even failure.
  • Remember that you can still make choices to recover after a failure.

Make Choices, Expect Risks, and Be Patient

  • Risk accompanies each decision, but having a system can help you stop agonizing whenever you make choices.
  • While we should act on our agency to make choices, remember that some results may not be in your control.
  • Take time to sort through your options before you make choices. Be a calculated risk-taker.
  • You can’t force success, as it is the result of your circumstances. However, you can control how you respond to these things.

Spirituality and Risk-Taking

  • Sukhinder’s parents were doctors, and they believed that their work was how they gave back to the world.
  • Her parents’ beliefs largely influenced her thinking. For Sukhinder, who you are at work is part of who you are.
  • Work can give you joy and purpose if you choose the right workplace for you.
  • Sukhinder also shares that her father’s entrepreneurship and creativity inspired how she sees her work.

Find Where You Can Fit In

  • Your full self can only be realized in the right environment and workplace.
  • Put yourself in places that align with your values and celebrate your strengths.
  • Fitting in also means being in the right culture that helps you feel included.
  • When we don’t show ourselves fully, that may be because we are afraid of taking risks.
  • However, we can make choices and take small risks to express ourselves more.

Being a Truth Teller

  • We’ve all been taught that speaking up will make people dislike us.
  • Have more agency at work by asking questions that will help reveal the truth.
  • Seeking the truth will help not only you but everyone around you.
  • Bosses should learn how to foster truth-telling in their workplaces, as it helps everyone learn faster.
  • Listen to the full episode to hear Sukhinder’s experiences of being a truth-teller at work!

Lessons from the Pandemic

  • Sukhinder likens the pandemic to a coconut event.
  • It is something that showed us how flexible and resilient we can be.
  • Embrace change. Exercise your risk-taking ability and develop it like a muscle.
  • Make choices about what you want to change today. If you’re intimidated by big decisions, start with smaller ones.
  • You just need to take the first step and keep going until you start seeing results.

Success is an Accumulation of Choices

  • Sukhinder shares how she chose to quit Google and become CEO of Polyvore. However, she was outed after only six months.
  • To an outsider, this situation might have seemed like a failure.
  • However, 10 years later, those choices led her to become a board member in various e-commerce and lifestyle companies.
  • There is a rhythm to how we make choices and unlock results. Sometimes, these are just not the ones we are conditioned to expect.
  • Don’t let your failures cripple you. The more you make choices, the more you’ll encounter failure, but the more you’ll accumulate successes too.

Have the Courage to Ask

  • Learn to negotiate to help balance your life, whether for work or personal matters.
  • Sukhinder shares how she was able to negotiate with Google to take her daughter on international trips.
  • Don’t treat your professional and personal life in an entitled way. Rather, try to balance everyone’s needs.
  • Acknowledge that in a negotiation, something will be sacrificed. So it’s important to be open and communicative.
  • If you don’t ask, you’ll never know what’s possible.

Being Imperfect

  • We can’t have everything perfect and balanced in every single moment in time, and that’s okay.
  • It’s more important to look at things over a longer period.

How Sukhinder Feels Radically Loved

  • Sukhinder feels radically loved by the support and appreciation she has gotten from her family and colleagues.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[07:53] “When you fail, you still have a choice to make about what to do next. And once you've lived those cycles enough, another dawn will rise if you fail again.”

[11:29] “You can't force everything; you can't force success.”

[23:23] “Whether you seek out change or change seeks you out, your opportunity is to embrace change and become calculated and think of it as a muscle you can exercise.”

[24:31] “You're not one choice away from success. Success is often many unfolding choices, and they’re imperfect. All you really need to do is make the first one.”

[29:48] “People who choose frequently may encounter more failure; they're likely to accumulate more success as well.”

#WisdomWednesdays: Spreading Hope and Overcoming COVID-19 Through Love and Compassion

COVID-19 has impacted the lives of everyone across the globe, making the world seem like a terrifying place. After more than a year, there are still surges in cases despite all our progress. While it may be difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we should stay positive. There is a silver lining to the pandemic. We will all get through this if we keep spreading hope  and extending a helping hand.

In this episode, Rosie shares her experience of contracting COVID-19. She talks about how she and Torry pulled through, with the help of their friends and loving dogs. Getting the virus made her realize just how crucial it is to have a community that can support you in these trying times. Rosie and Tessa also emphasize the importance of prioritizing collective welfare over individual concerns. By pushing for the greater good, we can all move forward from this pandemic.

Tune in and be inspired to start spreading hope and acting from a place of love and compassion.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Hear about Rosie’s firsthand experience with COVID-19 and how she was able to overcome the virus.
  2. Know about the importance of emotional support, compassion, and responsibility.
  3. Find out how you can continue spreading hope in these difficult times.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Contracting the Virus

  • Rosie recently contracted the virus and is still recovering.
  • She was yet to be vaccinated. However, she is not anti-vax.
  • Her doctor advised her to wait for 90 days for her body to recover before getting inoculated against the virus.
  • She regrets postponing her vaccination because she was afraid of missing a day of work. When she got the virus, she ended up having to rest for two and a half weeks.

Interacting with Gentleness

  • After contracting the virus, Rosie had more compassion for people who had gone through the same experience.
  • Many emailed her, asking about her vaccination status. While she recognizes that they come from a good place, she reminds everyone that it’s also important to be gentle.
  • She hopes that we can tune into compassion and empathy instead of attacking and blaming each other.

On Vaccination

  • There’s a difference between not being vaccinated yet and being anti-vax.
  • Tessa expresses how the United States is fortunate for having so many vaccines to choose from and the ability to make a conscious decision.

How Rosie Survived the Virus

  • Rosie is thankful for our medical professionals who helped her when she got sick. Many of them contracted the virus during the start of the outbreak.
  • Since she lives in a big city, she was able to get their meals and groceries delivered.
  • She also got comfort from talking to her friends who also contracted and survived the virus.

Post-COVID-19

  • Rosie fell into a slump after getting the virus. She thinks that lack of movement and human touch contributed to this depression.
  • Once she started feeling better, Rosie did minimal restorative yoga and cleaned their house.
  • However, she had to stop halfway through because she began to feel ill again. She then realized that she barely ate anything in the past days since she lost her sense of taste.

How Their Dogs Helped

  • Rosie and Torry have three pit bulls: Chowder, Rosie, and Brinks.
  • They slept in separate rooms and split up the dogs; Rosie got the two boys.
  • During that time, Chowder was very attentive to her. He seems to sense that something was wrong.
  • The dogs helped Rosie stay sane during the whole ordeal.

Spreading Hope and Compassion

  • We are all figuring things out together.
  • Remember how important it is to take care of each other.
  • Be compassionate, empathetic, and responsible. One of the ways you can do this is by wearing a mask.
  • Emphasize taking care of the whole, as opposed to focusing on the individual.
  • Keep reaching out to others and letting people know you’re here for the greater good.

Coming From a Place of Love

  • We are currently balancing between a scary, difficult time and a hopeful, transitional one.
  • So, it's important to remember that we are all humans going through human experiences.
  • Rather than coming from a place of judgment, try to be more curious. Doing so allows for learning and deeper connections.

From Addiction and Felony to Transforming Life  Through Health and Fitness with Doug Bopst

Everyone has a burden to carry. Everyone has pain or trauma. But not everyone handles it the same way — sometimes, the weight is too great for someone, and they look for anything to numb their pain. Chasing numbness leads them down a rabbit hole of slow self-destruction and disregarding the important things in life. But there's a light that you can reach, no matter how deep the pit you're in. The path to transforming life may take some time, but it's never too late.

In today's episode, fitness trainer Doug Bopst joins us to share his journey in transforming his life from addiction and a felony conviction. He discusses the negative mentalities stacked up in his mind that made him turn to drugs at a young age. Doug also talks about how addiction affected his life and relationships and the catalyst that sparked his recovery journey. He imparts the lessons he has learned from his life story and how he uses it to help others.

If you want to learn what it takes for you to go through the process of transforming your life, this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Discover the importance of establishing an identity for yourself through how you see yourself and show up.
  1. Find out the role of having a mentor and people who guide, motivate, and hold you accountable throughout your recovery.
  1. Learn the most critical aspects of the addiction recovery journey and transforming life.

Episode Highlights

Doug’s Last Name

  • Doug had no confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth growing up.
  • People have been mispronouncing his last name throughout his life, but he couldn’t stand up for himself.
  • It wasn’t until he gained self-confidence that he dared to correct people.
  • Your name is your identity. You'll be sacrificing your identity in other ways if you can't stay true to that part.

Doug’s Background

  • Doug was born and raised in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland.
  • He has been a trainer for over ten years. Doug also hosts the Adversity Advantage Podcast, wrote multiple books, and spoke at various events.
  • Growing up, Doug used adversity at his complete disadvantage. He ended up incarcerated on felony drug charges.
  • Turning to drugs and ending up incarcerated was him mismanaging pain, stress, and his identity.

Stacking Negative Mentalities Inside Your Head

  • Doug's "What's wrong with me?" mentality is rooted in two things: his parents' divorce and loving sports yet being unathletic.
  • The first thing he used to numb the pain was food. Doug also blamed his genetics for his athletic ability.
  • This mentality stacks limiting beliefs and creates a massive balloon of anxiety, fear, and worry.
  • Doug turned to drugs at 14 and found that he could pop this balloon and numb his pain.
  • Addiction keeps you chasing that same numbing feeling. Because he couldn't afford to buy pot every day, Doug started selling it himself.

How Addiction Affected Doug’s Relationships

  • If you don't establish an identity for yourself, you will use other people to create it for you.
  • Doing what he needed to do to fit in with a certain crowd created tension at home.
  • Doug’s mother kicked him out of the house at 16 and sent him to live with his dad full time.
  • He transferred to another school and ended up meeting different people doing more drugs.
  • Doug barely graduated high school. Despite being a decent student and having dreams, he was only worried about fitting in.

The Catalyst Moment

  • He started to sell more drugs for money after graduating high school and met more people doing it.
  • Doug eventually started doing cocaine every day, which affected his anxiety. But ending up in the ER because of his panic attacks didn’t change anything for him.
  • He went from taking five milligrams to hundreds of milligrams of Percocet every day to maintain his lifestyle.
  • On May 5, 2008, Doug got arrested for felony drug charges. A cop pulled him over before a drug deal for a busted headlight and searched the car.

Doug’s Conviction

  • The judge convicted Doug of felony drug charges. He initially got a 5-year sentence in jail but was put under a 90-day suspension.
  • He then received a 5-year probation, 200 hours of community service, and fines.
  • The judge offered to take the felony conviction off his record if he completes the probation without any problem.
  • Doug cried when he walked into the gates of the detention center at 21. He also cried when he left because he didn’t want to leave.

Transforming Life and Beginning Recovery

  • Doug had to go through detox while in jail. A detox from drugs is like having the worst case of the flu for three weeks straight.
  • Doug’s transformation started when his cellmate asked him how he landed in jail.
  • When he told his cellmate his story, his cellmate told him to quit being a victim. It’s not what Doug wanted to hear, but it was what he needed to hear.
  • His cellmate told him to own his choices. These words empowered Doug.

Starting to Workout

  • After asking his cellmate why he couldn't do push-ups, he replied it's because he was fat. Not wanting to remain fat drove and motivated Doug.
  • During this time, Doug was fat physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. That is, he was carrying a lot of weight with him.
  • His cellmate trained, motivated, and held Doug accountable. As a result, he successfully reached his fitness goal after his sentence.
  • A light bulb went off in his head; he was finally going to change his life.
  • The only repayment his cellmate asked of him was not to mess up and pay it forward.

Changing and Paying it Forward

  • Doug stuck to his word. He got to a place where he wanted to help people use fitness to change their lives.
  • He became a personal trainer, wrote several books, and has shared his story on various platforms since then.
  • While changing, he had to earn back the trust of his family.

Doug’s Recovery Journey

  • He didn't have a clear-cut recovery program. Fitness became his catalyst for getting out of jail.
  • Through that, he decided to change his friends, eat better, go back to school, become a trainer, and pay it forward.
  • His grandparents took him in when he got out of jail. They gave him the sense of love and accountability he needed.
  • When you’re in the process of transforming life, you need to take responsibility for yourself.

Accepting His Relationship with His Family

  • Part of recovery and life is accepting that some family dynamics will not be perfect.
  • The key is to continue working on yourself.
  • Doug is unsure if there was anything his parents could have done differently to help him with his addiction.
  • But he wished his mother asked him “Why?” instead of “What?”

On Addiction and Battling It

  • When we look at the “what,” we come down on the person instead of the underlying trauma.
  • Addiction is an internal battle displayed externally. There’s no blueprint in handling this situation.

Transforming Life through Faith

  • Doug was at a point in his life wherein he achieved what he previously wanted. Still, there were moments when he felt unhappy.
  • One of Doug's clients, who is a pastor, invited him to church.
  • Though resistant at first, Doug finally tried it out. After praying, he felt the monkey on his back come off — the same monkey that would come off when he was doing drugs.

Doug’s Final Advice

  • You may be in a place of darkness now, but things will get better. You just need to keep moving forward.
  • If you make choices aligned with your highest self and take one small step every day, you'll get to the light.

How Doug Feels Radically Loved

  • Doug experiences radical love when he's making choices aligned to his truest self and who he wants to be in the future.
  • Self-love means that you hold yourself accountable even when life is tough.

5 Powerful Quotes

[11:43] “Because I didn't establish who I really was, I didn't stand up for myself. I was just looking to fit in. I always say to people, if you don't establish your identity for yourself, you will end up using other people to create that identity for you.”

[28:20] “[My cellmate said,] ‘You can be a man, and own your choices, and know that you got yourself here. And it's up to you to get yourself out.’”

[31:34] “What drives me is just being able to share my story, not to, for the notoriety of it, but to help other people get inspired, to help other people get motivated, to not go down the same path that I did, or if they're going down that same path to course correct, if you will.”

[35:43] “I believe in having a safety net. But I also believe in doing the work and taking responsibility for yourself. Because no one's coming to save you.”

[45:04] “Just know that if you just put one foot in front of the other and make choices that are aligned with your highest self, and in your future, and where you want to go one small step every single day, you'll get to the light. I promise you. There's no guarantee when or how it's gonna happen. But you'll get there; you just got to keep moving forward.”

○     Know Your Endo: An Empowering Guide to Health and Hope With Endometriosis

Episode Highlights

On Podcasts and Guesting

  • Jessica only interviews people she cares about or whoever sparks her curiosity.
  • When it comes to podcast guesting, Jessica can automatically rule out inauthenticity.
  • If you’re thinking of pitching yourself as a guest, you should do research before reaching out to the host.
  • If you're still building your show, make sure your guests are proud and interested in what they do.
  • If you want to bring in people from other backgrounds, do it later.

Jessica’s Podcasting

  • Jessica recently ended her podcast that ran for 7 years.
  • She stopped because she’s already tackled many topics and decided she can use her energy for other projects.
  • Jessica found it difficult to leave the people she collaborated with, many of whom became good friends.

Jessica’s Books

  • Jessica got a hysterectomy due to her endometriosis diagnosis years ago.
  • To control her symptoms, Jessica took on diet and lifestyle changes.
  • These changes then led to her writing a cookbook with plant-based recipes.
  • Jessica’s cookbook had a whole page dedicated to endo and she received a lot of positive feedback from it.
  • From here, she set up a website to help women identify the symptoms of endometriosis. This eventually turned into a book.

Facing Women’s Health Issues

  • Some women are ashamed of their body’s dysfunctions.
  • People still have so many incorrect views, especially towards those with an endometriosis diagnosis.
  • Your doctor can also give you misinformation about your condition.
  • So you need to take matters into your hands and learn more about your body.
  • Then, take your time to implement changes in your lifestyle. Do it for your own sake and overall wellness.

Misinformation on Endometriosis

  • Endometriosis is when tissue lining grows outside of your uterus instead of on the inside.
  • This condition can cause fatigue, painful periods, and painful sex.
  • However, some people who have endo don’t necessarily experience painful periods.
  • Pregnancy is not a treatment for endo. What’s unfortunate and disturbing is how some doctors still suggest this treatment and some people buy into it.
  • During pregnancy, symptoms may seem manageable, but the root causes still exist.

Getting an Endometriosis Diagnosis

  • MRIs and blood tests aren’t good enough for an endometriosis diagnosis.
  • The only true diagnostic test for this condition is a laparoscopy.
  • Most women get an endometriosis diagnosis only during their late 20s or 30s.
  • The average period to get an endometriosis diagnosis is 8-10 years.
  • Around 90% of women with endometriosis also have GI issues.

Jessica’s Relationship with Her Condition

  • Jessica admits that writing her book on endo drained her.
  • It brought back her bad experience and trauma with her endometriosis diagnosis.
  • Now she takes care of herself by jumping on trampolines, watching TV, and spending time with her family.
  • She also makes sure that she has some alone time to practice self-care.

Advice for Women with Endo

  • An endometriosis diagnosis does not mean the end.
  • Don't be ashamed of your symptoms, no matter how embarrassing you may think they may be.
  • Know that you aren’t alone. Seek support from someone who also has a chronic illness.
  • Practice true empathy.

How Jessica Feels Radically Loved

  • Jessica feels radically loved when she takes an hour to be by herself.
  • She reminds those with endometriosis to make themselves a priority.
  • When you take care of yourself, you can show up for people better.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[15:43]] “I started Know Your Endo as a really just an informational website where people could go, and just have, you know, these are the symptoms of endometriosis. This is what it is. And then that really turned into the book. ”

[18:17] “And I think what presents a problem for so many people with endo is you might share with your doctor and then you're told misinformation.”

[22:10] “It took some time to say, Alright, I'm ready to do this.’ Like it's okay if you're not ready to like, upend your entire life to make change.”

[26:52] “I think, you know, a huge thing is, is I think, going to my website, picking up the book and looking at the list of symptoms. Because the list of symptoms are so shocking to so many people because they're not necessarily related to what you would think is a ‘period’ issue.”

[33:52] “But truly, that you are not alone in this and that there is someone else that has peed their pants before. There is someone else that has bled through their pants. There is someone else that has not been able to get up off the bathroom floor like this.”

About Jessica

Jessica Murnane is an author, creative consultant, speaker, and a woman with endo. Her endometriosis diagnosis and resulting diet changes sparked the creation of Know Your Endo.

She has written two books, hosted a podcast, and has built a community for raising awareness for this life-long condition. Her endo awareness campaigns shed light on what endometriosis really is. Episode Highlights

The Modern Styling World

  • Everyone has their own journey. Thus, aspiring stylists should find the niche they want to be a part of.
  • Char started her styling career in the music industry. There, she learned how to multitask, become more patient, and hustle without being stressed out.
  • For Char, it's all about doing what you love to do.
  • They have to work with different personalities in the fashion world. It's the job of the stylists not to change their clients’ identity but instead enhance it through fashion.

The Role of Styling in Transforming People

  • Styling says a lot about an individual’s personality and identity. It is much more than putting articles of clothing that compliment one another to look good.
  • Stylists take a little bit of everything and incorporate different elements to form one feeling or mood.
  • Char doesn't want to be a trendsetter. She focuses on highlighting her and her clients' vibe through fashion.

Char's Styling Ethos

  • Char has always loved fashion.
  • When she was young, her mother would buy vintage and secondhand clothes for her because they can't afford to buy branded items.
  • Char’s styling ethos revolves around timeless, effortless, modern pieces. She encourages everyone to buy clothes that make sense for them.
  • Char's two-second rule — If you put something on and can't figure out how to make it happen or combine it with your other clothes, it's not the piece for you.

On Buying Clothes Online

  • When buying clothes online, your familiarity with the brand, designer, texture, and fabric will help you ensure you're going to purchase quality items.

On Char's Collection, CRK X VIMMIA

  • Having collaborated with different designers before, Char now wants to create an activewear lifestyle brand.
  • Designing comes easily to Char. She knows her exact vision for the collection: to create unique and functional pieces of clothing.
  • The collection is also for all mothers who are always on the go and don't have much time to figure out what pieces of clothing go well with each other.

Char's Biggest Lesson in Life

  • According to Char, life is all about timing and patience. Focus on yourself and avoid comparing your life to the people around you.
  • Char knows what works for her and her workspace. She is organized and thrives on multitasking.
  • She likes to enjoy each day, especially with everything that's been going on with the world.

On Wisdom & Surrounding Yourself with Good People

  • For Char, wisdom involves awareness of your surroundings, the people you bring into your life, listening to your intuition, and making wise decisions.
  • The people you surround yourself with say a lot about you as a person. Friendships are all about quality, not quantity.
  • To know if you have the right people in your life, you have to trust your intuition, just like when you're choosing the right outfit.

The Best Piece of Advice Char Had Ever Received

  • When it's the right time for you, it will happen. Don't force things to come your way.
  • Her mom always reminds her that everything is all about timing and encourages her to pray for the things she wants to receive.
  • In her work, there's no such thing as, “How can I make this happen?” As a stylist, her job is to make things happen and get the job done.

Char's Rule of Not Saying “No”

  • For Char, saying no sounds so aggressive.
  • She avoids saying no to her daughter. Instead, she explains why she can't do something and redirects her to other things.

Inspiring Women in Char's Life

  • She has always been inspired by her mom, from whom she got her fashion sense.
  • Her best friend, Anastasia, also inspires Char. She has a make-up business and likes to help others.
  • Char loves being inspired by women who can teach her new things.

Biggest Lessons Char Will Teach Her Daughter

  • Char wants her daughter to love herself and never allow anyone to say she can't do something.
  • She wants her daughter to listen to her instincts and believe in herself.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

“It (styling) says a lot about your personality, who you are, where you came from, your background, what you love. It's just like you're creating basically your own movie.”

“I'm not a trendsetter because I'm not into setting trends. I just believe that you set your own vibe and you set your own mood of how you like to look, how you like to feel, what you want to shape your ideas and thoughts.”

“I always believe that when you buy things, buy things that make sense.”

“If you surround your lifestyle with people that just want to be there for the wrong reasons, then how could you build a proper relationship or friendship in that type of environment?”

“I have a daughter, and I want her to be inspired by powerful strong women, and make her own space and path in life, and help others.”

How to Find Your Daily Inspiration with Light Watkins

When you feel stuck, how do you move forward? Where do you find the inner strength to be open and present to moments of daily inspiration ? Most of the time, the answer already lies within yourself. Once you stop worrying about the future or going over the past, you become immersed in the present and discover that inspiration is everywhere.

In this episode, we have Light Watkins, the author of Knowing Where To Look: 108 Daily Doses of Inspiration. He teaches us how to find our daily inspiration in the most mundane of experiences. When we take that first step into the unknown, creativity becomes a little bit easier to unlock. Light encourages us to embrace discomfort and build habits until they become reflex.

If you want to learn how to conquer your inner doubts and find that lightbulb moment, this episode is for you.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn how to stay present and pay attention to avoid missing your moment of daily inspiration.
  2. Discover and apply Light’s tricks to get unstuck.
  3. Develop a healthier relationship with social media.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Moments of Daily Inspiration

  • Light recalled meeting a friend who only had a blurry picture of his dog to remember it by. It was then that he realized that what's insignificant to him can be a meaningful memory to another.
  • Everyone has a story. When you peel back the layers and go beyond the surface, you can find a deeper and beautiful meaning.
  • To prepare for his book, Light practiced writing short stories every day. But when he runs out of topics, he meditates, and inspiration strikes.
  • It's impossible to run out of creativity because creativity generates further creativity. The simple act of showing up can give you that lightbulb moment.

Getting Unstuck Through Daily Inspiration

  • A powerful way to get inspired is to practice gratitude. Identify five to ten things that you're grateful for at the moment.
  • If you can't find anything you're thankful for, move your body and be aware of the physical sensations. Try to embed this habit.
  • When you stay grounded in the present instead of regretting your past or worrying about the future, you become more receptive to the richness of the human experience.
  • Staying grounded in the present allows you to discover the world is screaming to be noticed by you.

Building the Habit

  • It's essential to cultivate the habit of showing up for yourself.
  • The real challenge starts when other obligations get in the way, and it's no longer convenient to stick to your original plan.
  • Through pure repetition, Light learned how to build habits. Start now, and even finding daily inspiration will become second nature to you in no time.
  • In the face of setbacks, Light pressed on and ended up producing your own masterpiece.
  • Being nervous and afraid are prerequisites for inspiration. Don’t run away, but lean into that.

Seeing Through

  • Social media is a highlight reel of other people’s carefully curated lives. It’s not real.
  • In modeling, he discovered that stylists go to great lengths to make the clothes look tailored to the person in the catalog.
  • There's no point in comparing ourselves to someone else's highlight reel. It prevents us from living in the present moment and appreciating the good things we have.

The Right Balance

  • Social media platforms like Instagram embody society’s narcissistic tendencies.
  • The first step to cultivate a healthier relationship with social media is to be fully honest with yourself.
  • Identify what part of you is attracted to that platform and what you can do about it.
  • It may not be possible to quit social media completely, but you can learn to pick your poison and choose your battles.

Making Art

  • We have a choice to pit ourselves endlessly against other people on social media or focus our energies on making art.
  • Hip-hop culture is an example of people converting difficult life experiences into beautiful and artistic expressions.
  • If you have something in your life to complain about, try and ask yourself, "What's beautiful about this experience, and how can I express it?"
  • If we are willing to take a moment to reflect, it becomes easier to identify the feeling that we’re called to express within our lived experience.

Our Inner Child

  • We want to grow up into someone that is the full expression of ourselves. But we usually lose our way and suppress that part of ourselves when we grow up.
  • In Light’s podcast, he asks guests their favorite childhood activity and discovers that their calling as an adult is linked to that formative experience.
  • When we lose our early purpose, it is our job as adults to peel back the layers and find our true selves.
  • The confluence of areas in your life where you're not honest with yourself and where you are authentic is where you find your true purpose.

Freedom in Choice-lessness

  • The scariest part is just before you start. But once you take that first step, the fear gives way to strategy and logistics.
  • There's freedom in lack of choice. When we have too many options, we tend to get paralyzed. But when you're pushed into a corner and only have one choice, you focus your energy and resources on that.
  • Whatever your version of “the opposite” is, lean into that. Explore what makes you uncomfortable or fearful. Only then will you find yourself.
  • Taking a leap of faith is not a single act but a lifestyle.
  • Tune in to the full episode to discover how Light feels radically loved!

5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode

[12:28] “When you're not in the present, you're going to miss so much richness, so much of the sentience of just everything all around you all the time that is transmitting messages and communicating with you and really just screaming to be noticed by you.”

[16:21] “The real commitment doesn't even start until the original plan goes out the window. And that's when you really start to see what you're made of.”

[20:39] “I think nervousness and being afraid, in a good way, is one of the prerequisites for inspiration. So don't talk yourself out of it because you're nervous. Lean into that.”

[34:09] “Whatever is going to expose how you're lying to yourself, the areas of your life where you're not being honest with yourself, and where you can be more authentic. The confluence of those two areas is where you're going to find your purpose.”

[39:55] “Through exploring those areas that make you uncomfortable, you'll find comfort and discomfort and then you'll find that fear that tends to stop most of us most of the time, it won't be an issue for you anymore. And you'll find yourself.”

Creating Space, Resting Well, and Moving Toward Consciousness with Rod Stryker

We’re so used to being busy all the time because we live in a fast-paced world. When we do find time for ourselves, it’s frequently filled with noise from technology. More often than not, we are not resting well , reflecting, and connecting with ourselves. It is only through relishing in silence and creating spaciousness that our body, mind, and soul will be truly restored.

Rod Stryker joins us once again to talk about the importance of creating spaciousness in our lives. As a yoga and meditation teacher, Rod explains the significance of honoring our human need for resting well. And for those who feel like they’re too busy to be resting well, Rod shares some workarounds and bio-hacks to conquer that challenge. Lastly, we talk about how we can deal with life’s pains and difficulties.

If you want to know the secrets to resting well and feeling more connected with yourself, then this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn bio-hacks to resting well and creating spaciousness in your busy life.
  2. Find out why we seem to forget all our pain and suffering when we sleep.
  3. Discover how to deal with pain upon waking up from a delightful sleep.

Episode Highlights

How Spaciousness Allows for Resting Well

  • Life in the industrial world, especially with technology, isn’t conducive to the nervous system.
  • We have disconnected from the body’s four basic rhythms: the circadian rhythm, sleep-wake cycles, and rest and activity cycles.
  • Every 90 minutes, our bodies are meant to rest. When we slow down, we also become bored.
  • Boredom is critical to autobiographical planning, which is when our brains slowly begin to unwind and self-reflect.
  • This process creates spaciousness in our minds, and allows us to be more present and embodied.

Creating Spaciousness in a Busy Life

  • Using bio-hacks, you can create spaciousness even in your busy life.
  • Simply shifting from a narrow to a wide view can trigger your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for rest.
  • You can also follow the Pomodoro method. When you take short breaks, you allow your brain to go into exploratory mode. You’ll find it easier to work afterward.
  • In resting well, it also helps to watch what you do in the last 30 minutes before you go to sleep.
  • You need to be willing to step away from your responsibilities in your waking state and step into the mystery that is sleep.

What Happens When You Sleep

  • Rod explains sleep in terms of Yoga. As we extract ourselves from the physical, mental, intellectual dimensions, we move towards consciousness.
  • Consciousness is self-organizing, which means that as you approach it, you start to heal on all other levels.
  • Rod says that in sleep, we’re on the precipice of consciousness. We experience what Yogis call a floating delight.
  • In sleep, the body also enters a self-organizing state where it repairs and regenerates. However, when we wake up, we have to reconstruct who we were before sleep.
  • Unlike sleep, meditation offers an opportunity to choose how much of the “old you” you want to keep.

How to Deal with Pain in the Waking State

  • We humans prefer the familiar as opposed to the unfamiliar. We’d often prefer familiar pain to the unfamiliar cure.
  • When we sleep or meditate, life seems harsher because we compare it to the peace and spaciousness that sleep and meditation provides.
  • The solution to this challenge is creating spaciousness and separation, and interrupting cycles of hyperarousal.
  • During the pandemic, teenagers experienced mental health problems the most. That’s because they haven’t experienced enough difficulties to know that they’ll be okay.
  • Stepping away from your grief or loss reminds you that other things continue to endure.

Becoming More Conscious

  • When you’re focused on yourself, you’re in subject referral.
  • Object referral is when you pay attention to things outside of yourself.
  • We switch between subject and object referral all the time, but neither depict reality.
  • To smooth out the harshness of reality and achieve clarity, try to walk the line between subject and object referral.
  • Consciousness is in subject and in object, but is transcendent to both.

The Power and Grace of Present Moment Perception

  • Rod recounted how years ago, his two children got very sick and were brought to a hospital by a life flight.
  • He thought that if he wanted to be of service to his family, he needed to tap into the power and grace of moment perception by moving towards his consciousness.
  • Although it was a difficult process, Rob was able to access spaciousness and handle the situation well.

Parting Words

  • Rod recounted how years ago, his two children got very sick and were brought to a hospital by a life flight.
  • He thought that if he wanted to be of service to his family, he needed to tap into the power and grace of moment perception by moving towards his consciousness.
  • Although it was a difficult process, Rob was able to access spaciousness and handle the situation well.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[04:12] “[The industrial world] is not a construct that's conducive to your nervous system to the human nervous system.”

[14:18] “Step away and shift the rhythm. And then we begin to work more in sync with the nervous system and what it really does want.”

[24:28] “We don't give ourselves the opportunity to have that patience because we've been so desensitized to being bored, to being patient because everything happens so quickly. We've sort of primed ourselves to having this instant gratification.”

[27:23] “We prefer the familiar, as opposed to the unfamiliar. And we would actually, in most cases, prefer the familiar even if it's painful than the unfamiliar even if it has the promise of being less painful.”

[35:13] “The idea is you practice awareness through the course of your life. You remember that you're neither your feelings and your thoughts, nor are you what the world seems to be doing.”

What Intuition Means and Using It to Connect with Animals with Nikki Cuthbertson

Many of us consider our pets as part of the family. They are not just animals but true companions for life. We grow with them, learn from them, and at times create connections that go deeper than our physical selves. Yet humans, with all that our brains do, can sometimes fall out of connection with all that is around us. It is through animals that we can listen and find the connection again.

In this episode of Radically Loved Radio, Nikki Cuthbertson shares with us the deep emotional and spiritual connections we can create with animals and life all around us. She talks about what intuition means  and how we can hone it. We also discuss the importance of heart-mind coherence and tips to help us connect with the energy around us. The world around us is communicating with us and Nikki shares how we can dive deep within ourselves to hear it.

If you want to know what intuition means and how you can use this in your life, then this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Find out what intuition means and how to develop yours.
  2. Learn about different practices and techniques to hone your animal communication skills.
  1. Discover your connection to all life and the energy within and around us.

Episode Highlights

Nikki’s Moments of Connection with Energy

  • As a critical care nurse for 20 years, Nikki felt energy during heightened states before a patient passes away.
  • Nikki also felt beings welcoming these patients as they passed on.
  • As you let go of someone, it’s better to send them off with forgiveness than with a grudge.
  • Trauma locks down and disconnects the heart-mind coherence. You need to leave this trauma behind to reach absolute coherence.
  • The heart-mind coherence is how you can understand and connect with energy.

How to be a Better Communicator

  • First, you need a quiet mind to listen to your spiritual heart. Through this, you can find the place that unifies all of life.
  • Then, you need to know yourself as an energetic being. Nikki uses movement-based practices to help connect to being embodied.
  • Meanwhile, meditation helps you become self-aware of your frequency.
  • After this, you can let go of being human and merge with the consciousness of other energies.
  • In this state, we are all connected with the energetic world.

The Main Message of Animals

  • Animals show us love without conditions or boundaries.
  • Nikki’s biggest goal is to love the way animals love.
  • Their love can manifest in many different ways and through all kinds of messages.
  • Nikki has had deeply emotional readings with animals showing their concern for their humans who are not mentally well.

Why We’re Conditioned to be Closed

  • Since we were young, we’ve been conditioned to fit into society and culture.
  • However, we also need to find a place to express ourselves freely and work through the layer of shame.
  • Humans have the power of words and language. Use this gift to uplift others.
  • Listening is a lost art. Sometimes we need only to listen to reach the universal emotion we can all relate to.
  • To do this, we should learn to slow down and pay attention.

Connecting with Your Inner Self

  • Many of us crave to have an overstimulated mind and this can lead to an addictive cycle.
  • It’s best to have emotional and primal tools to release energy.
  • We need to understand what intuition means and listen to it.
  • Empathic people tend to have self-doubt.
  • Through animal communication, you can develop confidence and connection.

How to Avoid Seeking Validation

  • We may feel that we need affirmation that what our intuition is telling us is correct.
  • We all have different dominant ways of communicating. You have to reach the same wavelength to communicate effectively with others.
  • Communicating with animals requires imagination. Nikki recommends that you write without stopping to open the language unique to you and your animal.
  • It’s hard to practice with your animal because you already know them. When you practice with other animals, you can have their human validate your communication.
  • Over time, you can recognize what intuition means to you and how you can get to that point.

What Intuition Means and Getting in Touch with Yours

  • Recognize the tangible feeling of being captured and mesmerized.
  • Stay present in that feeling. This is the liminal state or the in-between of worlds that has a soft and diffused quality.
  • Practice heart breathing by going through the three layers of the heart: the physical, emotional, and spiritual.
  • A heart-centered practice gives you access to a language that’s vibrational. Listen to the full episode to know more about this process.

How Can You Practice?

  • Consistent and regular practice helps.
  • Choose one of your animals that you feel is open to having that kind of connection with you.
  • There is no set time limit of practice. Stay in it as long as it feels good to stay.
  • There will be a sense of completion when you’re done.
  • Cultivate presence in the present.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[08:05] “It's your spiritual heart. That place of thought, mind, and soul that we're constantly trying to polish to get through the layers of our being, and listen from that place. That place is the same place that unifies all of life.”

[15:40] “So there's these really beautiful ways that are so poignant of working with the animals in the way love can manifest in so many different kinds of concerns and messages, but the root in the essence of it is always love.”

[23:01] “Your intuition is kind of like your internal GPS, and your animals are pretty much dialed into that.”

[43:33] “When you’re cultivating presence, and I think that that's what the gift of communicating with the animals is— in presence, you're not in the future, and you're not in the past.”

[46:01] “For me, feeling radically loved means that I can see purpose in everything that I have lived to make me who I am… taking me out of anything that was my victimhood into really trusting in the divine plan.”

#WisdomWednesdays: Serving the Highest Good by Learning to Manage Emotions and Helping Our Environment

Throughout our lifetimes, we will undoubtedly face emotions that don’t make us feel good. As human beings, we are designed to empathize with others who are also feeling these heavy emotions. But where do we draw the line? At what point should you start to prioritize your feelings? How do we manage emotions  like these so we can serve the highest good?

In this episode, Rosie and Tessa discuss emotions and why it’s normal for us to shy away from negative ones. However, when we do so, we make decisions from a place of unconsciousness. Instead, we need to learn to manage emotions. Acknowledge the existence of your feelings and how they drive you to do certain things.

In the second part of the podcast, we examine the idea of the human race as one. We are all in this together. All of our actions affect the environment. So, we need to be conscious of how our behaviors are serving the highest good. It isn’t the time to bury our heads in the sand. One small step from you may be the catalyst of change amongst others.

Tune in to learn how to manage emotions so that you come from a place of conscious action to create change.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  • Hear inspiring passages from Unlearn by Humble the Poet and One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus.
  • Gain insights about how to prioritize and manage emotions.
  • Know what you can do to contribute to the betterment of our environment.

Resources

Episode Highlights

Discussing Emotions

  • Rosie shares a passage from the book, Unlearn: 101 Simple Truths for a Better Life by Humble the Poet.
  • It’s so easy to be swept away by big emotions because you want to empathize with people.
  • At what point do you draw the line between others’ emotions and your own?
  • Feeding an emotion that is not serving your highest good will bleed into other areas of your life.
  • Experiencing an emotion is like an automatic knee-jerk response. You could operate from a place of unconsciousness where your emotions drive your decisions.

How We Deal with Emotions

  • For Tessa, these emotions make her spend money on stuff like clothes. However, she admits that she wants to make purchases that provide a lasting experience of pleasure.
  • We know when we are doing things to avoid unpleasant emotions; it’s instinctual for all of us.
  • This is also because we have this fear of people not understanding our emotions.

Learning How to Manage Emotions

  • Instead of shying away, learn how to manage emotions by acknowledging and recognizing their existence.
  • Ask yourself: what is driving your decision to do something? What need is this decision filling? What aren’t you feeling?
  • Instead of being reactive in situations, know that you can manage emotions instead.
  • Make a conscious decision on how you want to proceed.
  • In the process, you’re teaching others how they should treat you.

The Premise of One Thousand White Women

  • Tessa’s favorite genre is historical fiction. She reads a passage from the book she’s currently reading.
  • Its story is set in 1874 in the United States when Europeans were colonizing the Native Americans.
  • During this time, the Cheyenne tribe’s chief demanded 1000 white brides from US President Grant.
  • The story revolves around what could have happened if President Grant agreed to this demand.

The Takeaway

  • Tessa sees this passage as an analogy of the unity of the human race.
  • We should ask ourselves what we do as a collective. How can we contribute to bettering our environment?
  • You can also create actionable change over time. How can you, as an individual, contribute?

A Global Environmental Problem

  • Rosie shares that she always wanted to go diving in the Great Barrier Reef. But when she got there, she was devastated by the water pollution and bleached corals.
  • We are quick to ravage the earth and its resources without acknowledging that it supports us.
  • We fail to see that what’s happening around us is caused by our negligence.
  • It’s high time that we educate ourselves and do our part.
  • Ask yourself: where are you allocating your resources? Are they serving the planet?

Having a Catastrophizing Mindset

  • It is a challenge to stay in the present and also remain conscious enough to make actionable decisions.
  • We see trash, particularly plastic, littering the beaches and oceans we visit.
  • These scenarios make the problems we face in terms of environmental degradation seem overwhelming at times.
  • However, all it takes is just one person to start picking up trash for others to follow.

5 Powerful Quotes

[04:58] “Accepting fear, confusion, anxiety, and whatever other unpleasantness simply means to understand it's part of us.”

[09:52] “When we feel an unsavory feeling, it's instinctual for us to want to not feel it. We don't crave unsavory moments; we want to feel good.”

[12:49] “You got to teach people how to treat you.”

[21:12] “How are we supposed to integrate with making a change if we don't believe that the Earth can support us?”

[24:27] “It's a challenge to stay in the present, but also to remain conscious enough to make those actionable decisions.”

Change Your Life with Ayurvedic Medicine with Dr. Avanti Kumar-Singh

We turn to Western medicine whenever we feel any symptom of illness. Our automatic response is that something is wrong with our physical bodies. But if you take a moment to reflect, you'll find that these symptoms are often due to your lifestyle and environment. After all, we are connected to everything in nature. Thus, we need to live in harmony with it to achieve optimal wellness. Connection and balance are the core of the practice of Ayurveda.

In today's episode, medical doctor and Ayurvedic practitioner Dr. Avanti Kumar-Singh joins us to discuss questions around Ayurvedic medicine ? She shares her realizations after shifting from Western medicine to Ayurvedic medicine. She also discusses Ayurveda’s principles, qualities, and elements. Finally, Dr. Avanti gives practical tips on how people can start applying it in their lives.

If you want to know just what Ayurvedic medicine is and how it can help you, you will find great value from this episode!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. What is Ayurvedic medicine, and how is it different from Western medicine?
  2. Learn the three areas of remedies that will help you easily apply Ayurveda in your life.
  3. Find out how you can start making small but profound changes in your life through Ayurveda.

Resources

Episode Highlights

The Health Catalyst

  • Avanti self-published this book amid the pandemic because she wanted to have it out without delay.
  • The idea came out as people constantly asked Dr. Avanti if she had a book from her teaching experience around Ayurveda.
  • In the book, she talks about how to apply Ayurveda along with her background around the practice.
  • Avanti shares that the book is part memoir and is meant to be a primer on Ayurveda.

The Shift from Western Medicine to Ayurvedic Medicine

  • Avanti had a health crisis during her medical training.
  • This experience urged her to take a hard look at her lifestyle.
  • Avanti questioned why she had no health issues in the first 20 years of her life when she lived at home.
  • She realized that, as the daughter of Indian immigrants, she grew up with Ayurveda.
  • After setting her sights on medical school, Dr. Avanti didn’t look back on the practice until her health crisis.

What Is Ayurvedic Medicine?

  • Ayurveda's basic principle says that we can access and have optimal health and wellness when we live in harmony with nature.
  • It can get complicated because human beings connect to everything in nature.
  • Avanti is not a proponent of the doshas when starting with Ayurveda because they're nuanced.
  • You first need to understand what imbalance is going on for you presently so you can get back into balance.
  • Ayurveda is a qualitative science. It’s crucial to describe the qualities of what you’re trying to heal.

Understanding the Qualities of Ayurveda

  • Everything in nature, including us, consists of five elements: air, space, fire, water, and earth. Every element has certain qualities.
  • There are 20 qualities or 10 pairs of qualities in Ayurveda.
  • You can apply qualities not only to people, animals, and plants but also to symptoms.
  • The golden principle of Ayurveda is like increases like, and opposites reduce.

The Counterbalance Solution

  • Step one: Identify what is the challenge you’re having and what are its qualities.
  • Step two: Apply the golden principle.
  • Listen to the full episode to learn the application of the counterbalance solution to anxiety!
  • There are three areas of remedies you can explore for self-healing. These include routines or daily rhythms, diets, and the tools of yoga.
  • You can easily apply Ayurveda to your life once you shift your mindset and understand that Ayurveda is qualitative.

Tips for Someone with a Stressful Routine

  • The most important thing is to create a schedule.
  • Have some touchstones throughout the day where your body and mind can go into relaxation.
  • Start your touchstones with sleep, wake, and meal times; these times are the most important.
  • Eating warm cooked foods and fluids helps ground you and is particularly helpful for people with anxiety.

Applying the Tools of Yoga

  • The three main yoga tools are breath, meditation or stillness, and movement or posture.
  • If you have anxiety, it’s better to visualize a mountain versus a flowing river
  • because mountains are solid and grounding.
  • Lengthen your exhale. Through this, you can calm the nervous system down.
  • If you want to ground yourself more, slow down your pace.

How Dr. Avanti Moved through Hectic Situations

  • Avanti admits she didn’t do it very well in the beginning. She went through many challenges and even got sick.
  • She was juggling being newly married, having two young children, and being in medical school.
  • After stopping and taking a good look at the situation, she started to incorporate the Ayurveda principles back into her life.
  • Ayurveda is about awareness and living consciously.

Collective Stillness from the Pandemic

  • Toxins create an imbalance within us, leading to symptoms, illness, and chronic diseases without remedy.
  • These toxins come from every aspect of life.
  • The pandemic allowed us to take a look at the different areas of our life.
  • As we’re reemerging from the pandemic, reflect on what you want to keep and get rid of.

Start Simply

  • Western culture tends to try and complicate everything.

#WisdomWednesdays: Put Yourself First by Practicing Introspection and Connecting with Your Inner Child

Sometimes we get stuck in relationships where we give, give, and give but don't receive anything in return. We lose ourselves in the struggle to feel loved and appreciated. Thus, to find fulfillment in any relationship, sometimes it helps to put yourself first . You need to develop a healthy and understanding relationship with yourself proactively. After all, how you see and treat yourself mirrors how you show up with other people.

In this episode, Rosie and Tessa delve into self-inquiry in different aspects of our lives and relationships. They discuss the importance of introspection in understanding repetitive mistakes and cycles. They also talk about how developing a relationship with yourself is the foundation of any relationship. Furthermore, Rosie and Tessa tackle the power of thought and connecting to your inner child.

Do you find yourself stuck in the same repetitive cycles of relationships and mistakes that do not serve you? This episode will shed some light on the actions and changes you need to make!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Understand the role of self-inquiry in addressing repetitive cycles.
  2. Learn why you need to put yourself first before you can show up for others.
  3. Discover why you should connect with your inner child.

Resources

Episode Highlights

The Difficulty of Applying Acquired Wisdom in Life

  • Part of the human experience is to make mistakes. Making mistakes is how we learn.
  • We have to reprioritize and change our perspective to give ourselves the space to do things efficiently.
  • Repetitive mistakes, experiences, and relationships are invitations to introspect and determine if there is an unconscious pattern operating.

Self-Inquiry

  • It’s a matter of spending time reflecting on these repetitive cycles.
  • Sometimes repeating the same mistakes over and over may be an operator error.
  • Instead of blaming somebody else, it could help to do some self-inquiry.

Spending Your Energy on the Right People

  • Relationships with friends are very similar to romantic relationships.
  • An asymmetrical relationship takes a lot of energy from the person who keeps giving but not taking.
  • It’s a conscious choice to spend your time with the people you can depend on.
  • There’s only a finite amount of time in a day. Put yourself first by paying attention to where you’re putting your energy.
  • Your relationships should give you energy, not take it away from you.

Put Yourself First

  • You don’t have to give up your strength to connect with others; you have to care for yourself to care for others.
  • Developing a relationship with yourself is the foundation of any relationship.
  • Relationships are the highest form of spiritual practice. Being fully present, investing time and energy to give and receive creates a deep reservoir for our vitality.
  • Sometimes, the desire to feel loved and accepted makes us willing to lose ourselves in the process.
  • But you need to put yourself first and prioritize what you need before you can give.

Interpreting Poetry

  • Poetry is interpretive of you and your experience; there is no right or wrong answer.
  • Listen to the full episode as Tessa reads the poem To Build a Swing by Hafiz!
  • Your interpretation of the poem depends on where you are in your life and what you are going through.
  • To Build a Swing compels you to reminisce on your childhood.

Our Childhood Dreams and How They Evolve

  • We go through a process of trying to find the thread of joy and figuring out our purpose.
  • Our passion doesn’t necessarily need to become our purpose.
  • While it can be, it’s vital to tell the difference.
  • Bringing back our inner child is important for finding fulfillment.

Taking Control Over Our Minds

  • Our minds are powerful; they’re constantly creating and narrating.
  • Everything we want to do is right at our fingertips, yet we create excuses not to do them.
  • The things we end up doing and spending our energy on are all a matter of how we redirect our thoughts.

Connecting to Your Inner Child

  • Repeatedly performing the same draining activity may be a sign of your inner child needing attention.
  • Instead of doing what feeds our soul, what we often do is seek love outside of ourselves.
  • Think about the ways you connect with your inner child. This inner child is the part of yourself that still needs love and nourishment.
  • Listen to the full episode to hear a guided meditation that helps you connect with your inner child!

5 Powerful Quotes

[16:14] “We utilize all of those resources to share our strength. But it doesn't say that we have to give up our strength in order to connect with others, in order to be the example to help our community, to help our friends, to help the people in our lives.”

[17:03] “You have to understand the relationship that you have with yourself. You have to understand how you talk to yourself. And in that way, like you were saying, by example, you're teaching others, how to treat you, how to be around you, how to treat themselves, and how to treat others as well.”

[18:30] “We're willing to run ourselves into the ground so that we are loved, and appreciated, and feel needed. When that work needs to come within. We need to do that work ourselves.”

[23:56] “The whole idea of bringing back that inner child to have that novelty play in our lives is I think, so important. It's all those little things that accumulate to make us feel fulfilled.”

[29:17] “What we've learned how to do, whether it's like environmental or in society, is seek our love and adoration outside of ourselves, which isn't lasting; it doesn't last forever. So we forget how to fill ourselves up on our own with those things that are creative and soulful to yourself like you were talking about.”

Episode Highlights

[05:19] Accepting Praise

  • It’s normal to have discomfort after receiving praise because we’re put in the spotlight.
  • However, you have to learn how to hold praise and criticism equally.

[08:20] How to Attract Love and Find Confidence

  • The pandemic has caused us to feel disconnected from ourselves and other people.
  • Many of us have tied our identities to the way we connect to the outside world, and we are left feeling lost when that is taken away.
  • To attract people of a certain type, you need to be that certain type.
  • That’s one of the reasons why self-care is important.
  • Think about how the world would be if everyone else was just like you. Let this guide the type of person that you should be.

[13:45] Reconcile Relationships

  • We all have complex relationships with ourselves.
  • At the same time, we have loaded relationships with things like food and money.
  • All these relationships affect who you attract.
  • For Dawn, the first step to getting out of that hamster wheel of self-doubt is to get clear about these relationships.

[20:03] Start Practicing Radical Forgiveness

  • Radical forgiveness involves taking yourself out of the equation whenever someone hurts your feelings or does something terrible.
  • Sometimes, we’re not meant to learn from these situations. Instead, we may be the lesson for other people.
  • The things that you want in your life may be different from what the universe has planned for you.
  • Don’t hesitate to put out there what you’re seeking, but be open to however the universe answers.

[22:53] Harness Energy from Food

  • Dawn shares how certain foods have energies. For example, when she feels afraid, she tends to use a lot of garlic, which has protective energy.
  • She also shares how masculine and confident energies can be found in foods like zucchini and bananas.
  • Meanwhile, nurturing and feminine energies can be harnessed from eggplants and watermelons.
  • Dawn also eats with intention. She visualizes what she wants to attract as she draws energy from her food.

[27:46] Go Back to the Basics

  • Be in the space of love and acceptance so you can attract the same.
  • Anytime you’re feeling stressed or out of balance, go back to the basics.
  • Assess what you’re eating and check if you’ve been moving your body.
  • Don’t become complacent and put it off for tomorrow. Fix it now.
  • Do not reaffirm the same mentality that got you in this state.

[31:55] Don’t Beat Yourself Up

  • It’s okay not to be perfect. You can give yourself the grace to seek comfort.
  • However, once you promise yourself something, do not go back on your word.
  • Breaking your promises reaffirms the negative thought patterns in your head.
  • Be honest with what you want and where you want to go.
  • Become responsible for these wants and take action.

[35:18] Why Self Care Is Important

  • If you keep attracting the same type of person, it’s a clue that maybe you need to look inward at yourself.
  • We tend to attract things that make us comfortable, even if that is bad for us.
  • Remember that your grass will only be green when you water it. Pay attention to yourself and you will attract the life you want!
  • Create a self-care routine to help you calm down. Take breaks and find what helps you become relaxed.
  • Self-care sometimes hurts and is uncomfortable, but that is part of the healing process.

[43:24] Take Control of Your Life

  • To attract what you want in life, you have to be a person deserving of those things.
  • Things don’t happen to you, but for you.
  • We can take control of our lives by taking control of our thoughts.
  • Nurture yourself with food, water, air, and movement.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[12:23] “We are what we attract, or we attract what we are. If our thoughts become our reality, then our outer world is a direct reflection of our inner world.”

[21:01] “Sometimes things aren't about what we need to learn. We are facilitators of lessons in other people's lives.”

[26:25] “Attraction isn't just about new relationships, it can be about deepening relationships.”

[39:04] “The grass is greener where you water it. Put your attention in your own damn yard, and your grass will be green too.”

[42:56] “If you want to attract the things in life that you want to have, you have to become the person that deserves those things.”

#WisdomWednesdays: Reducing Your Cognitive Load and Creating Ripples of Kindness

In a society that gives so much value to material possessions, we tend to get lost in all the clutter. Presented with many options every day, we stress out even on simple things like what to eat or what to wear. We unknowingly get bogged down by these choices, trapped in the mindset that more is better.

In this episode, Rosie and Tessa talk about ways to lighten your cognitive load. They discuss why having a simple routine can help us allocate our energy to the things that truly matter.

They also touch on the ripple effects of kindness. If we uplift one person, they will then pass on the positivity to those around them. Furthermore, Rosie and Tessa tackle the importance of being kind to yourself and how this affects our attitude toward other people.

Do you think you’re spending too much time and energy on making decisions? Do you want to live your life being kind to everyone  and yourself? If you answered yes to these questions, then this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn how to lighten your cognitive load.
  2. Understand the far-reaching effects of being kind to everyone.
  3. Discover ways to be more kind to yourself.

Resources

Episode Highlights

What Is Cognitive Load?

  • The things we carry increase our cognitive load.
  • What to wear and what to eat—these decisions exhaust our mental energy.
  • It’s overwhelming for us to have so many choices. Instead of making our lives easier, choices make them more difficult.
  • We make decisions all day long, but not all of them are equally important.

The Importance of Routine

  • Having a strict, simple routine allows writers and artists to preserve their energy for creativity.
  • Needing to make many small decisions during the day pulls us away from the work we need to focus on.
  • When you want to create something, plan ahead so you can dedicate most of your time and energy to it.
  • Once you develop a habit, you expend less energetic output towards doing that task.
  • Find the balance between variety and routine.

Being Kind to Everyone

  • Light Watkins’ book tells the story of a child who was on the brink of starvation.
  • A Nazi soldier snuck him a rotten potato. The child credits this act of kindness as the thing that helped him survive the holocaust.
  • The child passed this story on to his son and instilled in him the importance of being kind to everyone.
  • To immortalize his father’s lesson on the importance of being kind to everyone, the son created the KIND Bar.

The Ripple Effects of Kindness

  • Listen to the full episode to hear about Tessa and Rosie’s incredible stories of a ripple effect that started with one kind gesture.
  • Kindness is about allowing the ripple effect to begin.
  • The smallest kindness can change the course of someone’s day or even their life.
  • Make it a goal to do one random act of kindness every day.

Being Kind to Ourselves

  • Being kind to everyone starts with how kind we are with ourselves.
  • Start building a relationship with yourself by taking yourself out on a date.
  • You can do this by having a long scenic drive, going out to dinner with a book, or planning a solitary retreat.
  • Cultivating a relationship with yourself may help diminish your feeling that something is lacking.
  • When you enjoy being by yourself, you won’t need to seek as much validation from others.

5 Powerful Quotes

[06:19] “We think that having so much choice is better. But in fact, it's actually a lot more difficult.”

[08:51] “How we (feel) make ourselves feel beautiful, and how we express our confidence and how we express our personality. There's definite value in it.

[11:30] “We are such creatures of habit, and there's comfort in that.”

[21:19] “Just the smallest kindness can change the course of somebody's day, somebody's life.”

[25:01] “One of the reasons we depend on others for entertainment is because we don’t trust ourselves to provide it or maybe we just haven’t practiced it yet.”

#WisdomWednesdays: Achieving Self-Mastery  and Learning How to Slow Down

Modern society thrives on productivity. From the moment we wake up, we’re already on our phones, preparing for our daily routines and ticking off a long list of tasks to accomplish.

This busy lifestyle can steal time for people to contemplate and figure out what they truly want in their lives. While it's easy to give in to the demands of the world, we should always take time to pause and reconnect with our inner selves.

In this episode, Rosie and Tessa talk about the importance of achieving self-mastery. They discuss how to deal with distractions and resist the pressure of becoming hyper-aware all the time. They also talk about how the pandemic is the perfect time to slow down and practice mindfulness.

How can we use this opportunity to practice self-mastery? How do we keep reminding ourselves that we do not have to be busy all the time? What should we do to avoid feeling overwhelmed? If you want to know more, then this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Know the importance of slowing down and taking time to connect with your inner self.
  2. Learn why going through the pain of boredom is a rite of passage in learning.
  3. Avoid giving in to the demands of a hyper-productive society.

Resources

Episode Highlights

The Process of Self-Mastery

  • Wisdom has something to do with experience or knowledge. Part of this is the quality of being wise or exercising good judgment.
  • Like mastery, earning wisdom takes time. Learning a lesson involves the people and the experiences you had with them.
  • The more familiar you are with the process, the easier it is for you to find alignment within yourself.
  • Choose self-mastery in a society that values instant gratification.

The Pain of Boredom as a Rite of Passage

  • When you are learning something new, it can be painful and agonizing.
  • But it’s through this pain that you recognize your ability to be resilient.
  • How can you focus on the parts of yourself that need attention? How can you focus on creating openness to feed the part of you that needs filling?
  • Avoid feeding the pleasure zone in your brain tempts you to distract yourself.
  • Remember, you need focus, dedication, and time to learn something new.

The Cardinal Sin of Appearing Lazy

  • Being lazy is viewed negatively in our modern world. We always need to appear productive.
  • We now live in a time where apps tell people when to breathe and take a rest. We live in a world where we need to track everything.
  • Gone are the days when we ask ourselves, “What do I want to be doing with my life?”
  • And so we need to slow down and take stock.
  • We can learn from the sloths who are relaxed, contemplative, and focused.

Knowing When to Slow Down

  • Working from our homes allows us to have the chance to pause and recognize our autonomy.
  • Unless we use our discernment, we will fall prey to the demands of life.
  • Practices are important because they need us to pay full attention and be present.
  • The greatest challenge would be carrying this practice even as the world reopens.

S.L.O.W.: Four Tips from the Little Book of Sloth Philosophy

  • S: Sleep in. This can be hard for most people because we feel rewarded when we wake up early and get everything done.
  • L: Leave your phone at home. Find a weekend where you can choose to let go of your phone.
  • O: Opt-out. Change your attitude by thinking that you do not have to constantly be busy or engaged.
  • W: What’s the rush? When you feel overwhelmed, take time to pause and check-in with yourself.

Falling Back on the Same Demands

  • Regardless of all the mindfulness tools we have, we all still fall into the same demands of the world.
  • A hyper-aware state can keep you busy, but at the end of the day, you will still feel depleted.
  • It's important to take things more slowly, easily, and do them one step at a time.
  • Give yourself space. Make sure that you're free from distractions to connect deeper with yourself.

5 Powerful Quotes

[04:23] “So wisdom... Has to do so much with experience or knowledge. And I believe part of the definition is exercising good judgment. Or it's the quality of being wise.”

[09:08] “If you're constantly feeding that pleasure zone within your brain– the circuits that are making you feel good– then you're going to become really good at that you're going to become really good at getting distracted.”

[14:26] “There's the wisdom in knowing when to slow down and take a day off. And so the reason behind the sloths is their mindfulness and action. They're contemplating, they're deliberate, they're relaxed, and they're focused.”

[17:18] “I feel that unless we can make friends with the time that we have, and if we can utilize it in a way that's going to serve our highest good, we're going to continue to fall prey to the busyness, the ungrounded frenetic energy that life can sometimes bring us.”

[23:43] “For me, it's easier to take things one step at a time, to do things little by little, to incorporate one thing at a time so that I feel like I'm still doing something for myself, doing something for my highest good. But at the same time not overwhelming myself in the process.”

Episode Highlights

The Catalyst That Brought Millana Where She Is Today

  • When Millana was growing up, she had to move almost every year of her life until she was 14. She wasn’t able to keep in touch with a lot of her friends.
  • Because of that, she formed a deep relationship with her inner spiritual connection to God, the universe, and other different spiritual practices.
  • Most of her childhood was spent looking for a connection to something real and wanting to have fun.
  • Spirituality helped Millana survive her youth.
  • Healing her childhood traumas helped Millana realize that other people also enjoy an authentic community to heal.

To Those Intimidated by Spiritual Practices and Healing

  • Millana believes that every person is a healer. It’s just that we all have different ways of healing.
  • Often, we aren’t aware of the gifts inside of us that can heal us.
  • By healing ourselves, we then heal others.
  • If you think you don’t have the personality to be a healer, remember that it’s not about being like other healers. It’s simply about being the healer you came to be.
  • Only you can cultivate, discover, and allow that to be the impact within your own life first, and that then becomes the overflow for other people to benefit from.

Millana’s Most Important Teacher Growing Up

  • Millana’s grandmother taught her how to meditate and astral project at the age of four.
  • These spiritual practices taught Millana to find what was possible outside of her body.
  • In learning to see more than just her body, she explored other realms.
  • Her mom was the breadwinner of the family.
  • From her, Millana got to see what hard work looks like and how it’s like to start from absolutely nothing and build a strong career.

Experience with Ancestral and Generational Trauma

  • From an earthly perspective, you have two parents who brought you into the physical realm.
  • At the same time, there is parenthood greater than that: Mother Earth and the universal God force.
  • When Millana started getting deeper into her healing path, she had to have a lot of compassion for her family. She had a very mixed family and didn’t get to meet her dad until she was 25.
  • If we’re open to go beyond the constraints of what culture says parents should be, we can look at them as humans, not parents we have to obey.

Cultivating Self-Compassion to Create Change

  • When Millana experienced one of the hardest years of her life, she realized no one ever wants to look inside themselves because it hurts.
  • The first thing we need to do is have the integrity and honesty with ourselves about how we are creating our lives.
  • We’re usually in denial about ourselves, and we go easy on ourselves.
  • Instead of blaming others or circumstances, we need to see how our actions and decisions affect our lives.
  • Love can come in once we sit down with ourselves and come face-to-face with our ugly parts.

Toxic Positivity

  • Denial is one of the biggest hindrances to our healing.
  • When you allow yourself to see where you are at with yourself, you can unlock the healing potential of the godliness within that.
  • But when we bypass it because we don’t want to feel bad, we miss out on all the wisdom found in the pain we try to avoid.
  • If you can get into the depths of what your bad experiences do to you as a human being, you overcome it and start to see it as a gift.
  • However, if we just tell ourselves to get over it, we cannot be transformed.

What Millana Is Currently Working On

  • Millana is looking forward to their first in-person healing of 2021.
  • She enjoys seeing the transformation that happens to people after a healing session.
  • Millana believes that we have everything we need within us. She wants the world to know that you heal yourself.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[6:39] “I truly, truly believe that every single person is a healer. Every single person. And I think the way that we heal is different; it’s as unique as we each are individually.”

[8:00] “Whatever your gift is, whether you’re a singer or you’re a writer or you just love to cook, that gift was actually meant for you to enjoy. And then from that overflow, then that’s the gift for the world to enjoy and to be healed by.”

[15:25] “For the first time, possibly in at least a few thousand years, we have actually had the consciousness and awareness that the way that things have been doesn’t mean that they need to continue, that we can change them, that traditions are actually meant to be broken.”

[20:38] “We got to really, really have the integrity and the honesty with ourselves about how we are creating our lives and why we have the kind of relationships we have, the jobs we have, the money ,or lack of money, or whatever that is.”

[22:47] “Real self-compassion [and] real self-love can only come out of that darker place.”

5 Powerful Quotes

[02:09] “It’s the opposition of being reactive. Wisdom is coming from a place of knowing and a place of deep knowledge.”

[06:32] “How everything is in constant motion, and if you’re not moving towards transformation it’s only going to inwardly grow, you know, what is not being brought to light is going to dwell in the darkness.”

[13:43] “When do we ever give ourselves the opportunity to find that spaciousness where we can then process those things, or we can then be bored and allow new ideas to come in.”

[14:57] “Anger is a tool, just like every emotion is a tool, that is useful in times when it is needed.”

[32:48] “The best way for me to understand emotion and cycles and even phases in life are like the ocean. They have a building, they have a climax and then they have a moving downward, a slowing down, a building of energy so it’s like a building of energy, an expression and then a lull.”

Episode Highlights

Linda’s Meditation and Yoga Journey

  • Linda’s yoga path started with meditation.
  • She previously had many body image issues and had a worsening disconnect between herself and her body.
  • Linda met a professor who told her stories about Indian mythology and the Vedas. Because of this encounter, she ended up going through transcendental meditation.
  • What spoke to her, in particular, was mantra meditation.
  • After her divorce and ending up in Berkeley, she met a Tibetan teacher who told her to stop with the mantra. She eventually came back to her breath and furthered her path.

How the Writing and Yoga Path Intersected for Linda

  • Linda went to Yoga Journal and got a job as a managing editor. She was already writing before this.
  • She started doing asana because of an offer, but she hated it.
  • She then met a teacher who was so soulful. Her body instantly responded when she trusted her teacher's touch, presence, and wisdom—it became a lifelong practice.
  • In the midst of that, her writing started to connect more with her heart, wisdom, and what spoke to her.
  • She started writing books and left Yoga Journal to write more. Linda became known as the “book doula.”

The Marriage of Writing and Spiritual Practice

  • Linda loves helping people move their passion, ideas, and wonderment and what they want to amplify out into the world.
  • We all have a story, and we're the only ones who know how to tell it. But sometimes, we get in our own way when we try to say it.
  • There’s a deep connection between moving inward in our spiritual practice and emerging from the inner wisdom onto the page.
  • It’s a process of listening to what wants to be known and bringing forth what needs to be told.

Linda’s Practices and Daily Ritual

  • Linda went on to study with many teachers whose teachings she has absorbed into her being along the way.
  • Her yoga practice begins in the morning when she wakes up. Her inquiry is “How am I doing?” and “What do I need?”
  • She tries to separate her life from her work. Between those two things, she does at least one thing for herself in yoga.
  • Part of the yogic practice is to be fully present and finish one thing before beginning another.
  • She tries to do a short Yoga Nidra practice before going to bed to remind her body what it means to prepare for sleep.

Setting Boundaries Around Work

  • Setting boundaries is hard to do for Linda because of two things.
  • One is because opportunities don't always come to a freelancer.
  • Second is there are a lot of exciting things that she wants to be a part of.

What Being Radically Loved Means for Linda

  • The concept of radical self-love is fundamental. It's part of the trio of Tapas, Svadhyaya, and Ishvara Pranidhana.
  • Tapas refers to the willpower and engagement to show up and commit to our work. It also means simplicity and releasing things to look at the essence of who we are.
  • Svadhyaya refers to self-reflection and self-awareness.
  • Being radically loved means that connecting to something bigger than yourself. It helps you understand you're worthy of love and connect with yourself.
  • We are sometimes not aware of how our voices can potentially cause harm.

Controlling Our Thoughts

  • We can’t control how we feel, but we can control our actions, speech, and emotion.
  • People can sin not just through actions and speech but also through thoughts.
  • We can control our thoughts, but we can't predict them.
  • Our minds do what our minds do; they carry on, move things around, and bring them up.
  • Without agency around your thoughts, it can end up as a speech or action that causes irreparable harm.

Aparigraha

  • It is the practice of letting go of attachments.
  • Staying in svadhyaya can become self-absorption. We don’t understand how we cause pain or bring joy.
  • It's the idea of surrendering and letting go of the judgment you hold on too tightly.
  • Linda’s mantra: “Isn’t that interesting?”
  • One of the things meditation teaches about grasping is that you can cut ties to a thought.

The Meditation Practice

  • Don’t ever think that you’ve failed at your practice. The moment you notice something within yourself, it’s already a meditation practice.
  • Just sit down. It’s what meditation practice is about.
  • There’s no judgment in meditation; it’s just practice.

Being Kind

  • The kinder we can be to ourselves, the more freedom we have to be kind, gentle, and generous to others. It also works vice versa.
  • Tonglen is the ancient practice of taking in others' suffering and outwardly expanding the gift you have to give. We have an infinite capacity to do this.
  • Yoga Nidra allows us to dive deeply and help us realize our capacity to love and receive love.

Getting to a Heart-Centered Healing Place

  • It's an individual matter. One thing that yoga allows us to do is to experiment and freely come in and come out.
  • When someone is deeply in trauma, there is no relationship with the body, or the relationship is triggered. Thus, even the slightest sense of agency can be empowering.
  • Yoga allows us to test our relationship with our body both on a physical and emotional level.
  • Yoga is not yoga until it’s personal, and it’s never personal until you take it home.
  • Within a safe community, yoga can help you connect and create a deeper, loving relationship with your body, mind, and heart.

Final Words

  • We can’t separate our practice from our life.
  • Our practice allows us to accept and allow things that we’ve never thought about before.
  • Return to the idea of love.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

[06:51] “We all have a story to tell, and we're the only ones that know how to tell it. And sometimes we get stuck in our, ‘Am I worthy? Do I have anything to say?’ And sometimes we get in our own way, when we try to say it.”

[14:34] “Tapas means not just the willpower to show up and the work that we have to do in the engagement that we commit to, but it also means simplicity. It means paring down, pulling apart, releasing things so that we're looking at the essence of who we are.”

[18:27] What it is truly is that I can imagine the pain and suffering of others. I don't have their same experience, and I will never have that experience as a cis, white, privileged, elder woman. I won't, but in my practice, I have the space and the capacity of infinite love.

[24:19] “Everybody who works with me, or who studied with me, know that I have this mantra. That is, ‘Isn't that interesting?’ I know, because then I don't judge myself so much. So I can let things come up and go, ‘Oh, here you are, again. Me and you. Wow. Isn't that interesting?’”

[32:06] “If you take in the suffering of someone, and then you exhale, a sense of joy, or connection, or groundedness, or love, or whatever it is that you have in that moment to give. That's a beautiful exchange, isn't it? And we have an infinite capacity to do that.”

Lessons Learned from Grieving a Loss with Henry Ammar

Loss is an inevitable part of life, as is the ensuing grief that follows. However, knowing that it’s coming doesn't mean we're prepared for it when it gets here. When we lose someone important, it throws us off course. It may even lead us to having unhealthy responses to loss, like isolation. These unhealthy responses get us through the pain of grieving a loss , but they numb our feelings and prevent us from finding true healing.

In this episode, Henry Ammar teaches us how to make sense of grieving a loss. Instead of letting our emotions overwhelm us or sweeping them under the rug, he encourages us to embrace uncomfortable feelings. If we listen close enough, our emotions carry valuable wisdom and guidance. Only when we allow ourselves to feel the fullness of our emotions can we start healing.

Tune in to the full episode to learn how you can find meaning in grieving a loss.

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

  1. Learn to define your circle of control after going through a loss.
  2. Find wisdom and guidance as you go through grieving a loss.
  3. Discover the three things you need to do to deal with grief healthily.

Resources

Episode Highlights

On Grieving a Loss

  • Remember that we all go through grieving a loss. As you relate with others, you understand that you will get better.
  • When we go through grieving a loss, we tend to isolate ourselves and feel as if our sadness will last forever. But loss can also be a catalyst for growth.
  • Henry shared how several deaths in his family taught him to approach life differently.
  • When his mother was diagnosed with cancer, he made a conscious choice to deal with grief healthily. He chose to focus on what he could control and how he showed up for his mother during her last days.
  • There are healthy ways to work through grief and come out the other end.

The Intensity of Grieving a Loss

  • When you’re grieving, it helps to have a safe space of connection.
  • When we experience trauma, we react not only to the situation but also to past traumas that haven't healed.
  • It’s easy to block these intense emotions. But remember that feeling is part of healing.

Healing by Listening to Your Emotions

  • Emotional regulation is not about ignoring your feelings or letting them swallow you whole.
  • It means embracing the depth of your feelings with intention, compassion, and love.
  • Once you tune into your emotions, the next step is to get honest with yourself and ask, “What do I need to heal? What meaning can I give to this situation?”
  • Instead of letting your emotions take over, let them guide you. Become friends with them.
  • True healing doesn't mean you forget. It's giving new meaning to the situation, which will allow you to move forward with purpose and honor the memory of the one you lost.

Riding the Emotional Wave

  • Henry identifies three things that can help you along your healing journey.
  • First, find a support system that gives you the space to grieve. Don't isolate yourself, but also recognize and acknowledge if you need time alone.
  • Second, be lovingly honest with yourself. Make peace with the fact that there are things outside of your control. Let your emotions serve as guideposts.
  • Lastly, find a strong “why,” a reason to move forward and live on.
  • Grief should not make you hard nor weak. Like a tea bag in boiling water, it’s possible to come out of this experience stronger and wiser.

The Importance of Love

  • True healing cannot occur without love, so do not put up walls around your heart.
  • As you think about the person or pet you’ve lost, you can feel their presence through the love you shared.
  • We all go through grieving a loss differently. Whatever you’re feeling is valid.
  • Just remember, don’t close yourself off from love because of fear.
  • Commit to having magic moments and to being mindful and intentional about not closing your heart.

Radical Love

  • For Henry, the supreme ethic of life is love. It’s who we are and who we ought to become.
  • Don’t let the death of a loved one mean the death of the love inside you.
  • Death does not just take something or someone away; it also gives meaning.
  • Instead of going through the motions, learn to love with all your heart and appreciate the here and now. In life, you have a choice to make the best out of your limited time.

5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode

[26:37] “Co-regulation is a real thing, like regulating our emotions and it's not hiding it. It's not ignoring it. It's not allowing it to take over. It's lovingly looking at it with an intention as if it is a child crying out for help and you embrace with compassion and love.”

[32:26] “I'm not going to become enslaved by my emotions or let my emotions dictate me. I'm gonna let them counsel me and I think there's beauty in allowing our emotions, becoming friends with them instead of getting upset that they're there.”

[44:04] “I couldn't control the situation…I knew the only thing I could control is the meaning I'm giving my life going forward.”

[47:28] “Do not build a wall to love… I would much rather experience love in my life and lose it than isolate my heart from experiencing these moments again and creating magic moments in my life. So instead of building a wall, I committed to making magic moments more regularly.”

[55:17] “I think the supreme ethic of life is love. It's who we're becoming. It’s who we are, right, but peeling the layers off and stepping into that love for ourselves, love for others. And I think I didn't want the death of those I love, become the death of the love inside of me and the death of who I am.”
