Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hello Friends, I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

Having strong relationships is one of the predicators of wellness, happiness, and longevity. And our connections flourish when we take time to get to know ourselves, and others, better. Here are three ways to strengthen the relationships you have, and nourish the ones that might need some work: 1) Be kind Kindness is like a magnet. People like to be around others who are kind because they feel cared about and safe with them. The age-old Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would want them to do to you” still rings true today. It’s also reciprocal. When we practice being kind not only do we feel better, but we help others feel good, too. And this just increases opportunities for positive connections throughout our day, which, in turn, contributes to our own health and well-being. 2) Identify Nourishing (and Depleting) Relationships Take an inventory of your relationships to a get a sense for who’s nourishing you and who’s depleting you. See if you can spend more time with the nourishing people make stronger connections there. Try to spend a little less time with those who deplete you. This isn’t always possible, of course (ie: family members, coworkers, etc.), so in those cases, see if you can change your relationship a little bit by recognizing that those people may be dealing with some instability in their lives. Practice sending them some kind intentions reference Love + Kindness Meditation and see what comes up: “May they be happy, may they be healthy, may they feel safe, may they be balanced.” 3) Practice “Just like me” DNA research has revealed that regardless of gender, ethnicity, or race, humans are 99.9% the same.  As you go through your day and encounter someone who you think is different from you, silently say, “Just like me,” and see what you notice. You may just experience the awareness that each of us wants the same things: to feel cared for and understood, and to experience a sense of belonging.

Orly Wahba is the Author and Founder of Life Vest Inside helping people around the world incorporate kindness in their everyday lives. She’s an educator, entrepreneur, author, speaker and community activist passionate about inspiring and empowering people to be the best they can be.   Life Vest Inside is a non-profit founded to empower the masses to engage in acts of love and kindness. Life Vest Inside gained international acclaim when Orly’s award-winning film Kindness Boomerang went viral. Orly is the most inspiring, influential lightworker I’ve met in a long time.   I feel so privileged to have Orly on this podcast and share her love, light, and kindness with you. Orly graciously shared her ideas on living kindness, being kind to yourself, creating our ultimate legacy, and so much more goodness.   Radically Kind Orly   Leaving her middle school teaching job to start a kindness non-profit Making a promise to herself as a teenager that’s guided her life ever since Realizing that the more she gave, the more fulfilled she felt   Radically Inspired Clarity   When you understand your own value, you’ll be able to see the value in others. It’s easy to be kind to others, but you have to love yourself too. You can’t give it outward until you can inward. There are no superfluous people in the world. If you’re here, there’s something only you can do. Kindness is small shifts. Get inspired and make a small shift. Then, you can take ownership of kindness in your life.   Orly Wahba Answers…   How can we begin to overcome our fear of feeling like we don’t matter? What are you looking forward to in the coming months? How do you feel radically loved? Radically Loved Quotes   “It’s when we give to others that we get to see where our real value lies.”   “The common thread is kindness. Because of that we can actually rejoice because of our differences.”   “Inspiration is awesome, but if you don’t channel it properly, it will fade and you will lose it.”   “The stronger we become, the more likely we are to help someone else.”   A Little More About Our Guest Orly began her career in Kindness as a Middle School educator at the Yeshivah of Flatbush in Brooklyn, NY, teaching the children to embrace unity, build their self-esteem, and use the power they have to influence the world for good. Yearning to make a larger impact with her philanthropic work Orly founded Life Vest Inside in 2011, a non-profit organization with a mission to inspire, empower and educate people of all backgrounds to lead a life of kindness. Orly has spoken at TED and has been featured on The Today Show, CBS, NBC, Bloomberg TV, Adweek, IBTimes, Parade Magazine and many more. Orly was recently appointed as the CEO of Kindness USA, whose goal is to increase kindness perception within the US from 25% to 80% by the year 2027. What to do in the heat of the moment , When passive aggression emerges in the middle of a conflict, here are seven steps to take. 1. Chill out. Attempting to begin a dialogue when one or both of you are in a very negative head space will cause the person who behaves passive-aggressively to shut down or to escalate the situation. Take a minute to chill out and calm down before approaching each other and the issue 2. Talk it out. Don’t try to guess or assume you know what your partner is feeling or thinking. Instead, ask your partner how he or she feels. 3. Brainstorm. The work of being in a successful relationship takes two people. As often as possible, come up with ideas for solutions to your issues together. Make your list of options as long and as wide-ranging as possible. 4. List pros and cons. Once you’ve finished brainstorming a list of possible solutions, talk through the pros and cons of each idea on the list. 5. Win-win. The best solution is the one where both of you win the most and lose the least. 6. Execute the plan. Take your win-win solution and execute it. It may take some time to see if it works. Make a plan in advance for when you’ll come back to evaluate. 7. Evaluate. Did your solution work? If not, try one of the other solutions on your list for another trial period.

Michael Catherwood is an American radio personality, best-known as Psycho Mike for his prior work at Kevin and Bean on KROQ-FM and his current job as the co-host of Loveline with Dr. Drew. Mike has been a dear friend of mine for over a decade.   I’ve always looked up to Mike and his dedication to working on himself and his career. I’m excited to have him as a guest to share with you his story and insights.   On this episode of Radically Loved, we talk about how Michael changed his life and career perspective, what it’s like in the entertainment industry, being honest, and what’s happening with the next generation.   Radically Evolved Michael   Being consumed in an addictive lifestyle as a musician Becoming a radio guy and finding a new high Coming up against obstacles in the entertainment industry   Radically Inspired Clarity   Opportunities will come knocking on your door, but you have to create a world where you’ll be able to hear the knocking. You have to divorce yourself from what society wants you to be and really study what makes you happy and what feels fulfilling.   Michael Catherwood Answers…   How did you go from a place of feeling stuck and hopeless to creating this amazing life? Why do we have a hard time being honest with ourselves? How important is it to do things that make us feel uncomfortable?   Radically Loved Quotes   “I could’ve been disappointed that I didn’t go on to write songs, but it was a matter of shifting my perspective on life.”   “My only goal was to not be a loser. I never had any concrete idea of being a success. It was a survival mechanism.”   “Instead of running away from the fire, you have to force yourself to run toward it.”   “Identify what brings you happiness and shoot for that.”   A Little More About Our Guest   In 2003, Michael started working behind the scenes with Los Angeles radio station, KROQ. 1. It’s your brain.  Bad Habits is simply what our brains do. They’re designed to create neural pathways that provide the best results. So, when a desire triggers a reaction that in turn satisfies that initial urge, the brain takes note. The next time that desire arises, the brain calls up the circuitry that got the job done before. When an urge is satisfied—whether for soothing, attention, or any other response—we experience a rush of dopamine, the neurochemical associated with feeling good. After a few blasts of dopamine, we start to crave more, which then drives us to indulge in the triggering behavior, be it eating fast food, checking your phone, or lighting up a cigarette. Voila! You have a habit.   2. Will, want, won’t Recognizing bad habits —the trigger, the impulse, the brain’s learned way to satisfy that need—is just part of the process of unwinding them. There also needs to be an intention to do things differently, tied to something that deeply matters to you.   3. Remember HALT When you get clear on your want—the deeply personal reason for wanting to make a habit change (hint: “I should” isn’t one of them)—then begins the work of strengthening your ability to choose differently (aka, willpower). But as anyone who has tried to diet or commit to exercise knows, saboteurs to our will abound. This is when psychologist Christopher Willard recommends employing the acronym HALT. Hungry, Angry/Anxious, Lonely, Tired   4. Try compassion - Research shows that when we criticize ourselves, it actually short-circuits the brainpower we need to unwind old habits and adopt new ones. Criticism (self or external) causes the same fight-or-flight impulse, limiting access to the higher functions of the brain, like being able to see the bigger picture, explains life coach and mindfulness instructor Carley Hauck. “Criticism makes us feel more anxious, more depressed, and more afraid of failure.” If you regularly tell yourself you “can’t” or that you’re not enough in some way, try using a more compassionate and understanding tone instead. Once we can be compassionate in our thinking, we can figure out the next best step to take toward the change we want.    5. See it, and believe it- Mindfulness helps build the ability to resist giving in to urges that foster unhealthy habits. Visualize the circumstances that typically trigger an urge. Notice what thoughts and feelings arise in the body. See if you can identify where you feel that urge physically, but don’t engage it. Instead, relax the body and tune in to your breathing, in and out.

1) Name it to tame it. Instead of denying that you’re afraid, look fear in the face. Give it a name. For me: Fear of not being or doing enough.   2) Comfort yourself. Start by exhaling deeply, which is the key to calming the nervous system.   3) Take a baby step. Break the behavior you are avoiding doing into an action step so small that it no longer feels worth resisting. I’m going to go meditate for three minutes. I know I have three minutes, and that doesn’t feel so scary, after all.

LaRayia Gaston is the incredible creator of Lunch on Me. This fun, interactive, non-profit creates a strong community and create strong bonds between the homeless and the housed by providing fresh, organic foods for everyone in need. Love without reason is the heart of everything they do.   This girl is so incredible and she has the most amazing people working with her. She blew me away when I met her at Wanderlust. I saw the love, dedication and passion she has for this community, and I was floored.   LaRayia is one of the most inspirational people I’ve ever met. We spend time talking about her story and her insight into why we need to give, the importance of acknowledgement, and truly experiencing community.   Radically Connected LaRayia   Working as an art director and giving her art purpose Creating a non-profit to end starvation in America Keeping volunteer work a secret and getting inspired when she shared it Setting her own standards for a non-profit and living up to it   Radically Inspired Clarity   Instead of simply having gratitude about what you have, do what you can to help those who don’t have what you do. Little things won’t get to you when you keep in perspective what extreme hardships others are going through.   LaRayia Gaston Answers…   What inspired you to take on starvation in America? How many people do you feed and how often? What have you learned the most since starting this non-profit? How has this impacted your life and how you view your life?   Radically Loved Quotes   “I think everything in my life pushed me to this place.”   “It’s just common sense to me. Someone’s hungry, I have enough to share.”   “Acknowledging everyone has changed my life. I want to be open and acknowledge anyone in my space.”   “My problems aren’t real problems, even hard things.”   A Little More About Our Guest   LaRayia has been volunteering and feeding the homeless for over 12 years. While serving, she’s experienced some of the most life altering moments. Her direct human encounter in poverty and starvation has taught her so much about life, people, community, love and tragedy. One of the most important things about LaRayia’s movement is that "Starvation being alive and well in America is only due to the neglect in redirecting food, that is often treated as waste" In order to make change happen, people have to be educated on the problem. Her mission is to integrate an interactive way to help, by using social media to bring communities together for the greater good. She’s here to end starvation, starting with America.  www.LunchOnMe.org

I had the best time and I feel so lucky and fortunate to call her a friend of mine.   Lori and I talk about her incredible story and the transformation that she brought to her own life. That’s where Lori found a whole new level of fulfillment. If you still have a question mark around you, that may be a sign you need to expand your tribe. Understand that life has seasons. Falling in love with your journey will also help you fall in love with yourself.   Lori Harder Answers…   Were you always a self-starter or was that born in a moment? If a client triggers you, there’s work for you there. As a teacher, you have to learn that you aren’t always right. Accept that you’re imperfect and you’re learning.   Mastin Kipp Answers…   Does a spiritual journey require us to be fully committed? Or can we do it halfway? How do we begin to identify that we’re in an environment that’s keeping us where we’re at? What are you working on in your life that you’re most excited about?
