Radically Loved® with Rosie Acosta

Hello Friends, I’m Rosie Acosta. I am a Meditation Teacher; Speaker and Author of You Are Radically Loved: A healing journey to self-love. I grew up in East Los Angeles during the 92 La Riots and it set me on a troubled path for many years. I didn’t grow up with mentors in my life, so I turned to reading as many books as I possibly could to learn about life’s purpose. In my journey as a First Gen-Mexican American, I found having these conversations gave me insight, support, and inspiration. So, I decided to create a place where I could share these conversations with my community. The Radically Loved Podcast was born! How do we create a radically loved life? Come have a sit with me so we can discover all things mindfulness, spirituality, self-love, and overall healthy living. Please be sure to share the episodes that you love and also leave us a review!

We live in a frenetic environment. Such things like “hustle mentality” have made us frantic to get somewhere, anywhere — as long as it’s “there”. Setting your sights on your goals is important, but not at the expense of being present in the here and now.
In today’s episode of #WisdomWednesday, Rosie and Tessa discuss the practice and the path in their spiritual journey and the different struggles people might face along the way. Impatience, mistakes, anxiety, and unchecked desire can get in the way of finding peace.

Learning to deal with these will help you grow into the person you’re meant to be.
If you’re overwhelmed with everything that’s happening in life, whether internally or externally, and want to find peace within yourself, then this episode is for you!

Episode Highlights
[00:45] Learning Something New
●Eddie is Rosie’s childhood friend that’s like a brother to her.
●Since he’s the lead singer of a hardcore metal band called King, Rosie and Torry asked him to give them singing lessons because they’re into karaoke right now.
●Rosie’s dad is an incredible singer but singing doesn’t come naturally to her.
●While some people have innate talents, practicing and honing your skills will help you get better at anything you’re passionate about.
[03:44] How to Handle Mistakes
●When microaggressions happen, she noticed she tends to blame herself immediately, then become defensive and blame someone else.
●She realized that she blames others because of fear and feeling unworthy.
●Instead of blaming others, respond with healthy mindsets and efficient solutions.
●Everyone becomes worried and anxious when they make a mistake, but pausing before reacting will help you handle things better.
[09:29] The Letting Go Process
●With the book launch, Rosie is juggling a lot but she also wants to enjoy the process.
●Once anything you create is sent out to the world, it belongs to the audience who’ll take what you’ve done and interpret it with their own lens.
●Each person will perceive things differently.
●The writing process is intimate and vulnerable, so the letting go process can be difficult.
[12:33] Resonating with Radically Loved
●Rosie did three interviews yesterday, and all three people had read the book.
●One of her favorite things in this experience has been seeing people resonate with the idea of being radically loved.
●Though she thinks it isn’t notable, many people were really into her childhood story.
●Learning yoga as a philosophy before she did the asana practice was also something people found fascinating.
●She hasn’t talked about relationships being our ultimate way to our spiritual path yet.
[17:20] How Wisdom Wednesdays Started
●They had a bump in listeners since they became an iHeart Radio podcast.
●Tessa has known Rosie for a long time, being one of her students and an incredibly gifted yoga teacher, coach, and author.
●Wisdom Wednesdays started out as an experiment but now they enjoy just hanging out.
[18:40] The Three Things You Need For a Spiritual Quest
●You must be willing to inquire within.
●Accept that some things happen for no reason.
●Find someone to guide you.
●Spirituality happens when you mind your own business.
●Living in an authentic, heart-centered way has always been the crux of who she wants to be as a person and as a teacher, and the foundation for everything she does.
[22:17] Being Grounded
●Perhaps Rosie created a container where she can foster and grow.
●The value of their yoga training is in the stillness and being able to sit with ease and feel everything resonate within them.
●Surround yourself with people who are open and want to learn.
●Remember that the practice is the path, and the path is the practice.
[25:54] Where the Path Leads
●Finding people that will guide you can transform your life.
●Being a perpetual student, Rosie always wants to learn new things and integrate them.
●The practice isn’t done to get better at something or reach a goal; it’s to learn how to be on the path, let go, and open our hearts to the present.
●The place that we’re trying to get to is here, and we’re already here.
[28:51] Dealing with Anxiety and Stillness
●In order for something to stand the test of time, it’s going to take time.
●People tend to become impatient and rush because they need to get “there” when “here” is where you really need to be.
●Anxiety comes from living in the future or dwelling in the past.
●Living in a frenetic environment makes it difficult for us to be still and steady.
●Being still gives space for the things that we really want, so think deeply about what you want and how it can make you feel fulfilled.
[34:08] Reconciling Contentment and Desire
●Tessa remembers mulling over with some students, “How do I remain content with what I have while also progressing as a human and reaching my goals?”
●Until now, she still grapples with contentment and striving towards goals.
●It’s okay to have desires, but discernment is important so you don’t feel less than.
5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[02:42] “If you’re passionate about something, and you just keep practicing and in practicing at it, you will at some point at least get decent enough.”
[20:34] “Here’s the thing about spirituality. It doesn’t happen when you’re looking at somebody else’s life. It happens when you MYOB: Mind Your Own Business.”
[25:23] “It’s important to surround yourself with people who are open and have a desire to learn and to realize that the practice is the path and the path is the practice.”
[28:16] “... the place we’re trying to get to is here. And we’re already here. That’s where the path leads us. It’s not leading us to some elusive place out there, somewhere that is impossible to get to.”
[29:49] “In order for something to stand the test of time, it's going to take time.”
[37:10] “You have these desires [...] but it’s not going to change your belief about yourself and it's not going to change how you feel about yourself. There’s a difference. The minute that it does and you feel less than, then at that point, it’s back to the drawing board.”

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[07:58] “You know, success implies a singular destination. What [our life] looking for is [its] continued growth. What it’s looking for is a deeper sense of meaning, a deeper sense of contribution, a deeper sense of alignment, a deeper sense of connection.”
[15:46] “When something, even if it’s painful, gives us a sense of fulfillment and a sense of meaning, the pain becomes impermanent and the fulfillment stays with us.”
[19:22] “Those who have experienced [grief] know, it sort of has a mind of its own. It normally comes at the most inconvenient times.”
[21:48] “There is another way to relate to [fear and other uncomfortable feelings]. And that’s by inviting them in. And while it feels like the complete opposite of my instincts, it’s actually the action that feels the most soothing and relieving.”
[25:14] “What that tension is saying to you is that there’s a version of you that is capable of more; of more meaning, more contribution, more joy. The tension of who you are today and who you know deep down you can be next month [or] next year. That tension is actually the seed of change.”

Episode Highlights
Rosie’s Creative Driving Force
●Rosie was branded "the girlfriend" during her first few years with Torry.
●Rosie is intrinsically a strong woman; she spread her wings and paved her way toward her purpose.
Rosie’s Book Writing Process
●Rosie has always been fond of writing since she was a child. To her, writing is one of the most exciting forms of expression.
●To prepare herself, she puts herself into the mindset of “done is better than good" and releases her desire for perfection.
●Writing a book may look easy — it's just adding words and connecting phrases, but the process is much more complex.
●Rosie found it challenging to write cohesively and concisely.
The “Aha!” Moment
●Rosie had stored so many thoughts and ideas in her head for a long time.
●Rosie wanted to turn these ideas into something to help, contribute, and make a difference to the world.
●In her pursuit of purpose, she realized that she wanted to create the book she needed.
The Rough Road To Getting Published
●Rosie's psychic encouraged her to express her ideas in a book.
●She researched how to pitch herself to publishers.
●Reality hit her when her prospective publishers seemed uninterested with her first draft of a book proposal.
●With the help of a publisher, Rosie created a proper book proposal.
Getting Through Roadblocks: Torry’s Side
●Considering that he did not attend design school, Torry shares how his lack of knowledge inspired him to be an artistic designer.
●However, he admits to encountering roadblocks along the way that made him question his worth.
●Torry either powered through these difficulties or just let them be. For the latter, he believes that anyone can reignite their spark.
●Roadblocks can appear in the creative process.
●To keep his interest in Red Monkeys Design from waning, Torry expanded into other fields.
Getting Through Roadblocks: JD’s Side
●Like Rosie, JD also wanted to turn his ideas into a book. However, he had a hard time placing his rapid-fire thoughts onto paper.
●As JD struggled typing the words, he thought of a more unconventional way of deciphering his ideas — through audio-recording.
●Rather than insisting on the traditional creative process, focus on finding a way that works for you.
●People tend to look at the process in binary, but you should also consider what lies in the middle.
●JD connects his creative struggles to his more personal grapple. Listen to the full episode to learn how JD relates fatherhood to the creative roadblocks.
An Itch To Scratch
●Rosie refers to her book as an “itch to scratch." She would have regretted not creating and publishing her book.
●Now that her book is up on pre-sale, she feels complete and fulfilled.
●Rosie's book is perfect for anyone looking to learn more about themselves and go on a journey.
Feeling Radically Loved
●JD has been feeling radically loved in the recent weeks — by himself. He has taken this time to practice more self-love.
●Torry has also been feeling radically loved through his dog, Lucy, who has been his comfort throughout the podcast.
5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[09:20] JD Cargill: "Some people can be creative, and it's just in their head. Creative, and they dream, and they dream. But some people are creative that inspires the dream, and the dream takes action because you actually move and do it."
[29:50] JD Cargill: “Who gets to decide what your creative process is? You.”
[30:45] JD Cargill: "To get the creative process going when I feel stumped or lazy or whatever is to distract yourself at first. Once you're distracted by that, you can move one step in the right direction. You will be surprised how it keeps going."
[35:16] Torry: “We’re hustlers in a way that if there’s anything that we really want — if you want those new jeans, new shoes — you’ll find a way to make it happen.”
[43:43] JD Cargill: “In this time and age when we're all trying to fight doubt, fear, and shame, and guilt, we should look at the opportunities to say, ‘I did that, and I’m going to give myself credit for it, and thank you for the universe for letting that part of my life and now let's go do the next thing.’”

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[06:15] “We need an uprising in how we think about our scaled food system. What is available to people? Where is it available? What ingredients are even in these things? How do we get this to everybody?”

[10:54] “We have developed a proprietary formula where we can give people longer than normal farm market shelf life…[and] get that farm market quality experience with our bread.”

[23:49] “Information alone was not going to be the key [to a healthy life]. It was finding things that were practical and implementable.”

[27:53] “Oftentimes, you have to hit a very specific cost structure in order to be a partner of a retailer. So in order to hit those cost structures, what often happens is you have to cheapen the product.”

[37:45] “Radically love means love despite my imperfections.”

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[03:54] Sarah McDevitt: “If we don't think of mental health as the foundational element of our being, everyday life, and our society, we're just ignoring something that affects every single thing that we do.”
[06:20] Sarah McDevitt: “We just really wanted to build something that brought together science and research, ancient traditions, and new technology to help people be consistent with meditation and breath training.”
[13:11] Sarah McDevitt: “One of the hardest things about the last few years is the ambiguity. There's been so much not knowing, and it's hard to plan ahead in your life. It's hard to have these kinds of things to look forward to if you can't plan ahead.”
[19:52] Sarah McDevitt: “There are so many reasons that you could have for meditation. From things that are impossible to measure, like spirituality, connection, communication, or patience. But then there are also physiological effects that we can measure.”
[26:15] Sarah McDevitt: “[Teenagers] don't necessarily feel that they have the control to impact their long-term health. Or the capacity to get there, think about that, or prioritize that. One of the things that meditation can do is help anyone feel like they have that moment of control within their own life.”

Do you find yourself doing things you hate? How often do you engage with people who drain you, but you still spend time with them anyway? All of us have preferences, but we often don't honor them. Subsequently, we end up burned out and frustrated, leading to resentment. Identifying acts you're pushing yourself to do is the first step to boundary setting.

On the bright side, there will always be the right community where you can thrive. Nedra also shares ways to end toxic relationships and manage "energy vampires."

Episode Highlights
Importance of Boundary Setting
●Nedra’s book compiled a series of her personal life experiences as well as those of her clients on boundary issues.
●We often don’t realize how we have adopted other people’s beliefs. Setting boundaries is a way to reclaim ourselves.
●We all have things we like and don’t like. However, asserting these preferences is usually a challenge.
●As adults, we need to honor other people's boundaries, especially the boundaries of children.
●We ignore our personal discomfort by allowing ourselves to submit to people's beliefs.
How Can We Start with Boundary Setting?
●Honoring your preferences requires identifying how things could either be spirit enhancers or spirit breakers.
●In the podcast, Rosie and Nedra discuss how to overcome Rosie’s aversion to Facebook.
●When you know that specific actions are draining, it helps to find other strategies to achieve the same goal and still retain energy.
●We have our own energetic boundaries that notify us whenever we’re involved in an energetically draining pursuit.
Boundary Setting with Energy Vampires
●When dealing with people who drain your energy, determine how often, for what duration, and what topics you will engage with that person.
●We tend to get used to patterns in relationships. However, if a specific relationship is draining, we need to break the pattern. Do something different.
●Nedra suggests reflecting on how you can contribute your own pain in these relationships.
●If you think you are the energy vampire, ask people you trust for their feedback.
You Can’t Please Everyone
●It’s easy to point out other people’s flaws and harder to look at our own.
●Remember that you cannot please everyone, and that's okay.
●In the era of social media, it's normal to want everyone to like you. People are different, and you won't align with everyone.
●Instead of trying to please everyone, look for your own community that appreciates you.
How to End Toxic Relationships
●We often feel that ending relationships require closure and a declaration of why the other person is terrible.
●However, relationships can end slowly over time.
●Before confronting toxic people, identify your intentions first.
●It's best to opt for a gentle conversation and tell them you need space, which can gradually end the relationship.
How to Encourage Children to Try Things
●Nedra shares that children already have preferences. It may take years for them to be open to new choices.
●Don't force children to try things. Understand that there may be other things that contribute to their preferences.
●Give children the ability to shape their preferences.
●You can introduce them to new things slowly over time.
Why Nedra Feels Radically Loved
●Nedra shares that she feels radically loved when people are authentic in expressing love — such as hugging.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode
[15:02] “There are things that we like and things that we do not like, and it is okay to honor both.”
[16:22] “You have to determine how often, for what duration, and what you want to talk about. Those are the three ways to handle people who deplete your energy.”
[18:35] “If things aren't working, don't keep going with it. Try something even a tad bit different.”
[24:44] "The world is full of human beings [that] are different, and there are some people who will be offended by something [and] there are some people who will get the joke. You have to find your community."
[27:39] ”Reading people and telling them how terrible they are is typically not very effective. We don't need to tell people how they're terrible.”

Episode Highlights
Pride and Accomplishment
●Rosie’s book is available now for preorder.
●She often gets asked, “Are you so proud of yourself? Are you so proud of your work?”
●Those questions always make her pause due to pride and internal inquiry; she isn’t quite sure that “pride” is what she feels about her work.
●Rather than proud, she feels accomplished that her efforts bore fruit.
You Are Your Own Worst Critic
●Not feeling proud of her work might be an internal issue of being her own worst critic.
●In the process of acknowledging her work, she wonders if she would be proud if she did something differently.
●When she says she isn’t proud, she isn’t being hard on herself or self-deprecating.
A Reminder to Aspiring Authors
●Writing a book also means promoting and selling it.
●There will be many interviews where you might have to repeat yourself and dig deep into the why you’re doing what you’re doing.
The Story of the Midwestern Woman at the Beach
●When she was a teenager thinking about her problems and future, she decided to ditch school to go to Venice Beach.
●At the beach, Rosie encountered a Midwestern woman and told her that she was there to figure out her problems.
●The woman told her that there’s no problem bigger than the ocean.
●Upon hearing that, everything clicked — nothing is that big of a deal, so why was she so perplexed about a decision that she knew would serve her highest good?
●Listen to the full episode to hear the full story in more detail!
Books That They See In A Different Lens
●For Rosie, some of them would be Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Light on Life by B. K. S. Iyengar, and A Path With Heart by Jack Kornfield.
●Tessa finds poetry soothing and keeps several poetry books on her nightstand.
●Some books that hit different for Tessa each time she reads them are any Mary Oliver book and The Prophet by Khalil Gibran.
Appreciating Time and Life
●At the beginning of her journey, the Prophet was gifted to Rosie, and she was amazed because of its beauty and wisdom.
●We often lose the little moments in the mundanity of life, forgetting who and what we are.
●Remember that this time is valuable, and your life is meaningful, no matter how ordinary it might seem to you right now.
●Sometimes, you’ll find yourself glad that you never got what you always wanted.
Getting Out of Your Funk
●When Rosie feels stuck, music is always her panacea.
●Rosie highly recommends watching the Beatles documentary if you’re searching for something that will make you feel good.
●Doing something different helped Tessa get out of her groove.
●If you feel stuck, surround yourself with inspired and committed people or briefly pull back from that energy to help yourself become unstuck.
The Radically Loved Summit 2022
●Another free Radically Loved Summit is happening on February 7-18.
●There will be phenomenal, incredibly inspiring speakers to share their wisdom.
●The event aims to create a space and opportunity for people to experience Rosie’s book, and each speaker was assigned a chapter.

[16:21] “We lose those little moments because of the mundanity of life, right? We forget how to remember who and what we truly are.”
